Bob, I think you're missing the point somewhat. This isn't a replacement for a phone or a proper computer. It's something in between... something Apple are hoping people will buy in addition to the other things.

Yeah I'm sure it's a cool gadget, but what would you actually use it for?

Yes, I get that. I have a proper computer, which I use as a proper computer, and a phone, which I use as a phone.

Specifically, I (we) would use if for internerd, (seemingly) endless photo and HD vid sorting, and writing (which I do but would rather sit somewhere else in the house than in front of music gear) and (of course) watching some online telly content 'wherever'.

Just the regular stuff that we do on a laptop, if we had one that worked.. only we don't.

I did try with a Netbook. I tried. But it was rubbish. And it still cost ?300.

Think of it as a giant, heavy i-phone. Doesn't look such a "must have" does it?

My 13.3" macbook beats any windows PC I've had and does all that the ipad does and more. It all feels a bit like selling sand to Saudi Arabia. And then watching them buy it in droves.

I do love my macbook though. And as *Bob* has noted its like having an old volvo estate. They last for $%^$%^$^ ever.

iPad, and iPad pricing is not yet available. Still a good month of umming and ahhing to go.

The most pratical and honest review so far has come from an unexpected quarter - longtime Mac-hater Charlie Brooker (soon to be smugging it up with his own Mac after finally coming to terms with the fact that he'd "rather use a laptop that just works") - who has fingered the nub of the iPad's appeal once you've washed-off the sheen of Apple's marketing bullshit.

Whether it has a camera, weighs more or less than an iPhone, does more or less the an iPhone, compares favourably or not to a Macbook is neither here nor there. 99% of its usage will taken-up by emailing and surfing the web whilst watching tv - a scenario where iPhones and Laptops fall short - and one where the iPad will excel.

Which can all be done with a macbook? Usually on my lap whilst watching a film on my television set anyway. Unless we're talking about TV on the move - on trains for example? Its a giant iphone witha decent UI for mainly portable entertainment purposes. It's hardly some paradigm shift surely?

Sure.. if you've got one, which I haven't.

For me, buying a Macbook would mean me spending twice as much as on an iPad, for extra functionality which I don't need, packaged-up in a form which is slightly more cumbersome to use.

I have enough friends who own ?1000 emailing machines without needing to join the club myself.

"I have enough friends who own ?1000 emailing machines without needing to join the club myself"

so very very true.

macbook vs pc. so pointless a debate when a toaster loaded with linux and connected to a keyboard and a teleprint would probably do for most.

The quality of the porn is pretty terrible mind, and you'd always get melted butter on it.

Alternatively, I could buy a PC laptop, which would cost me around the same as an iPad, give extra functionality which I don't need - in a slightly more cumbersome form - and not even do the three things I wanted it to do in a pleasing fashion, let alone the things I don't need it to do.

Or there's the iPad. Which might just do exactly the things I want it to do, in a thoroughly pleasing manner, for a price that (compared to the alternatives) doesn't start to look so bad.

    • Sorry but I think it's best if people just check things for themselves when they buy things. In three shops/restaurants (from some years back) I just avoid the places concerned, as in all three  cases I was pretty sure it wasn't a genuine mistake, and in one place  it happened more than once and usually late at night.
    • Sorry Sue - me again. This has been on my mind all day, it's a big bug bear of mine. If you don't mind - please can you private message me some of these shops so I can cross reference / add to my AVOID list.  Thanks in advance. Let's make sure this doesn't happen this Christmas, particularly as we head into sales season. Even more problematic in my experience.
    • Pity you didn't quote what you are referring to, Mal. I didn't see the previous post, and my mind is boggling 😮
    • The Cherry Tree was absolutely excellent for a while when a youngish couple ran it and brought in a really good chef. It was them who renamed it The Cherry Tree. They were really turning it around. The chef did fantastic Scotch eggs, and one of the best roasts I've ever had. If memory serves the then owner,  for some reason known only to himself, took a dislike to them and what they were doing and sacked them all. And yes we weren't expecting a top class  meal last Christmas, and we left it too late to book anywhere else, but we weren't expecting it for a hundred pounds EACH to be quite as terrible as it was. Stupid us. Not sure why you are confused by my post, Jazzer? Did I misremember? Now it's got even more confusing because my posts have been merged and your confused emoji is shown at the bottom of the second one instead of the first 🤣
