High chairs will be provided... Play area for the toddlers... newcomers to the area welcome...

Copies of the Guardian will be made available.

Just bring your credit cards....

Foxy.

P.S. With a new Pop-up cafe opening vertually every other day it seems a better option to a pub.. which are closing down.

Yep I'm with foxy on this. Very happy to charge triple the normal price for something you can make at home and serve it on a slab of concrete. Maybe even through it at the hipster/yummy so they can enjoy the fad of working to get their food. They would lap it up. All drinks served in old jam jars too. For irony factor babychams will be on tap and three times the value of a bottled one. Bring your annoying kids and guardian newspapers, all most welcome. Just don't forget you credit cards and cash! I'll be specifically charging premiums on cooked eggs.

Louisa.

Which local pub has closed down around here in the last 10 years?

The Draft House, the third or forth incarnation of 'the Mag', the grove tavern, the 'dog', the heber arms? (Was that longer?). I could go on. Just because something closed and opened as something new doesn't mean pubs aren't closing!

Louisa.

The former Mag is still a pub! The Draft House took over from Cherry Jam which was a bar so hardly a long standing pub in the area. The Heber Arms was much longer ago. If you can go on, please do because I don't think any of the examples you sited actually count.

Good point. Don't forget that all pubs 'close' every night as well (despite opening the next morning).

So - unfortunately - all pubs are closing. Fact.

The Hope is an entirely new pub. John the Unicorn was not previously a licenced premises either - so there's two new pubs. Hops, Burns & Black - is a beer shop rather than pub, but also entirely new. Then there is the Flying Pig which was previously an italian resturant, now much more of a pub with food. There is also peckham Springs, Four Quaters, the Nines and I'm sure many others.

The Grove Tavern burnt down in a fire didn't it? And the Dog will reopen after the work to upstairs. Not sure how pub like it will feel with the hotel at the top but its not closing permanently.

Anyway-- have fun opening up your risk free restaurant that's safer than a pub investment.

Britain?s pubs are closing at a rate of 29 a week ? and London and the South East are the hardest hit.

The Campaign for Real Ale said the region has seen weekly closures rise by 11 per cent in a year to 10

10 pubs a week in London and the South East closing down.. That is sad..

That is because people arn't willing to put in the hours... Opening when they feel fit.. Closing when they arn't busy.

Owning such a business IS hard work.. but people opening Pop-ups trying to make a quick buck.

Places like The Curry Cabin.. 40+ years trading on Lordship Lane ..Same owner.. Staying open when not busy..

Does anyone think ANY of these new places will still be here in 40 years time..

Any business lasting 40+ years has got to of got it right especially where there is so much compitition..

I don't think so .

To be fair, plenty of pubs are closing down (Hoopers and Oglander to name a couple more). Changing tastes, changing habits.. very difficult to make a trad boozer work these days.

Families tend to do things together more than they did in the previous generations. Hence the rise in family friendly restaurants, cafes and pubs.

I don't dispute that but pubs and high streets in general are suffering throughout the country. In this little micro area both the high street and pubs are doing relatively well though running any business is far riskier and much harder work the DF and Louisa (I am sure firmly tongue in cheek) are suggesting.

You don't need to tell me that.. I had a shop on Uplands Road in 1993 (23 years ago) when all other shops had gone.

Northcross was sparse...

... I was one of the first... but too early..

    • Sorry but I think it's best if people just check things for themselves when they buy things. In three shops/restaurants (from some years back) I just avoid the places concerned, as in all three  cases I was pretty sure it wasn't a genuine mistake, and in one case it happened more than once and usually late at night.
    • Sorry Sue - me again. This has been on my mind all day, it's a big bug bear of mine. If you don't mind - please can you private message me some of these shops so I can cross reference / add to my AVOID list.  Thanks in advance. Let's make sure this doesn't happen this Christmas, particularly as we head into sales season. Even more problematic in my experience.
    • Pity you didn't quote what you are referring to, Mal. I didn't see the previous post, and my mind is boggling 😮
    • The Cherry Tree was absolutely excellent for a while when a youngish couple ran it and brought in a really good chef. It was them who renamed it The Cherry Tree. They were really turning it around. The chef did fantastic Scotch eggs, and one of the best roasts I've ever had. If memory serves the then owner,  for some reason known only to himself, took a dislike to them and what they were doing and sacked them all. And yes we weren't expecting a top class  meal last Christmas, and we left it too late to book anywhere else, but we weren't expecting it for a hundred pounds EACH to be quite as terrible as it was. Stupid us. Not sure why you are confused by my post, Jazzer? Did I misremember? Now it's got even more confusing because my posts have been merged and your confused emoji is shown at the bottom of the second one instead of the first 🤣
