It has MACE at the top of the current structure

I think it will look fantastic and it certainly better than the Guys tower that is next to it

yeah, it will look best fromt the angles where it blocks out the Guys tower which could spoil any skyline

I agree that the Guy's tower is old and ugly - I remember it features in the opening credits of the old black-and-white episodes of Steptoe and Son - however... it's where my daughter was born (15th floor I think), so I have a very big soft-spot in my heart for it....

I had a 2 hour root canal and removal in there... me, student, assistant, "boss", we felt like a team.

Great views though.

You can view the groundworks from the walkway from LB over to Guys.

Before they actually started laying the steel they have spent many months, maybe more than a year, setting the ground with piles etc and I been watching with me mate before beers - sort of big boys toys interest, it's a serious science getting to the point where you can actually start the works above ground !

It will be at the 72 floor by October so twice the height of Guys.

It is great that there will be a building in London at last with a public viewing platform.

Apparently Guys Hospital is going to be reclad but I?ve heard rumours that this is a bit half arsed and won?t do much to enhance the block.

Don't...

Get me wrong, I like shiny new modern 21st century architecture very much

But, is it me or does "The Shard" look like a regular tower block, with some pointy bits leaning up against it

I will probably grow to love it like the "The Gherkin" which I thought looked more like a "Butt Plug" at first

There again it still does, though we all know it is the "Butt Plug" we go along with "The Gherkin" name out of politeness, for tourists & the like

Imagine going into a chip shop & being served a real "Gherkin" that shape; come on please, what would you think

"Butt" & "Plug" first, then maybe "pickled/brined cucumber" second, wouldn't you..

Really ?

I can see the Heron Tower from my flat and from our perspective it is behind and to the right of the Gherkin which is a shame as I like seeing the gherkin standing out on its own. Anyway, The heron tower is the tallest till the Pinnacle gets going, then the Shard will overtake the lot. The Pinnacle I like too, it's by the Gherkin and Lloyds and replaces an old block which was taken down from the bottom up leaving the steel core in the middle. We were taking friends round last weekend. Took great construction shots!

    • Please understand that I am not doubting the word of anyone who has posted here with problems with bought-in prepared meat, but (I am old) uncooked meat (perfectly 'good' meat) does smell often, we are too used to shrink wrapped and chilled supermarket meat which can be almost scent free - so we are surprised when 'butcher's' meat does smell (and often, if it is uncooked, quite strongly). Indeed game which is high can smell quite strongly, and not in a good way to our 21st C sensibilities, without being off - as in food poisoning off. Certainly prepared meat, when cooked, should smell enticing, and not at all bad - so the experiences quoted above are certainly very worrying - but younger people reading this should not be concerned, particularly, if fresh (raw) meat they have bought from e.g. a proper butchers has a smell to it. Which is not to say that something which smells rank shouldn't be a point of complaint. Even the smell of high-ish game, if left unwrapped, should dissipate once unwrapped. If it increases however it may be  cause for concern. But raw beef or lamb in the joint can often smell of something which isn't necessarily particularly nice, without it being worrying. It will tend to cook with more flavour.
    • Thanks tedfudge, great news, well done!!! 🦆😊
    • Just an update  The ducklings were picked up by a lady from an animal sanctuary Sussex,  hopefully they have a good life ahead of them
    • We had one that projected stars and played lullabies. It was a soft toy bee with a hard plastic back. I know we used it but can’t recall how effective it was.  What was brilliant was the Lulla sleep doll which has a heart beat sound. That was a critical sleep aid for the first couple of years.
