Greetings,

Our next book is "The Secret Scripture" by Sebastian Barry.

Our next meeting is Wednesday 20th September in the Clockhouse at 8.00pm.

I thought our last book The Elegance of Hedgehogs was totally un-gripping but the end was excellent and quite sad so if you're still reading carry on it's worth it.

Till then,

Dear book group,

For October I want to set the date as 25th October. I am going to suggest "My Dear I Wanted to Tell You" by Louisa Young as our book that month.

I am hoping to invite Louisa to that meeting to discuss her book and her writing in general, but this I will have to confirm.

So we can discuss this in September.

Don't forget Rye Books, if we order three copies of the book group book we get a discount, but it's always good to support your local book shop.

Till next time,

Oops,

Sorry I forgot to say a big thanks to Sheila for bringing her bits & pieces from the war, that really was the icing on the cake of a brilliant meeting.

Perhaps you could send me some feed back which I will pass on to Louisa.

All the best and hope to see you all in November.

Till then,

Chick.

PS Teresa I hope Helen enjoyed it, I was a bit worried she didn't hear too well.

Some feed back:

Lovely evening.

It was so nice of Louisa to take the time to spend an evening with us. Interesting to hear how Louisa did the research for the book. And there were some poignant stories from Louisa and others about how their families were affected by the First World War.

Some feed back from last week.

I really enjoyed Wednesday. It was a treat to be able to discuss a book with its author and the first time I have ever done so. Louisa was very open and friendly. I was interested to hear how she was drawn to write ‘ My Dear I wanted to tell you ‘ after learning about Dr Gillies work with facial reconstruction. And I liked our lively group discussion with Louisa, and Sheila’s wartime contributions. I feel I now know more about the book and the war and there were one or two things I had missed which were brought to my attention. As a general comment about the book, I believe I have learned a little about the trauma of injury and disfigurement, this was something which I had never really considered before.

Dear book group,

Thanks to everyone who came to our last meeting, very lively.

Our next book is Love in the time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

[en.wikipedia.org]

I know some of us have read it already but it was a long time ago and it’s a good read, as I remember it's very funny.

This is for the January meeting will let you know the date next week.

Our end of year meal is to be at Yadas, Arch 163 Rye Lane, SE15 4ST on Wednesday 6th December AT 7.30 pm. I will send a map to you next week.

They do veggie, vegan and meat so some thing for every one.

This is a Kurdish restaurant, the food is superb and cheep but you get large portions, it’s a great place to go to. You have to bring your own wine and there is an Iceland and an off license near by.

Please let me know if you are coming asap.

Sheila, Sarah P(so is Jenson), Maggie-you are booked on to the BBC 4 Book club January 18th. More details next week.

The book for that is by Patrick Gale, A Place Called Winter.

Dear book group,

I have had a look at "For Whom The Bell Tolls" and it's over 500 pages so I sugest we do "A Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. We can do
"For Whom The Bell Tolls" another time.

About our man: [en.wikipedia.org]

Our next meeting will be February 14th in the Clockhouse upstairs in the Blake room.

For those of you coming to the BBC on Thursday please can I have your two questions?

And we have to be at Broadcasting House at 5.00pm. We will be fineshed by 7.00pm and then there is the Korean restaraunt if you like. It's very reasonable and the food is superb.

A big welcome to Jacqueline!

All the best

Chick.
