The world is in too much of a rush, we don't even have time for words! In fact, people who are in so much of a rush they won't let you off the bloody bus!

People (and I'm really not looking at you moos) correcting other people's spelling or grammar. In an essay or work email, okay. On here or the like, no no no, please don't! It's smug at best, and frankly cruel IMO. One of my best friends used to post on here reasonably regularly. He's very bright, but can't spell for shite, which he admits. One day he came on here and made, what I thought was, a very good point. However, he was roundly slated for his spelling and grammar, and has never posted since! Edited for spelling error. Oh the irony!

East Dulwich's own currency, anyone?
Keef replied to PeckhamRose's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
This is nothing new, I swore years ago that Clapham was using it's own currency! I remember paying 3 claam 50 for a pint years before it breached ?3 in the rest of the world! -
As Sean suggests, pop along to a forum drink up. Feel free to bring a friend for moral support, but you'll meet a varied bunch of people, all of whom have seemed very friendly and pleasant when I've spoken to them. It's definitely a way to meet people. I am from the area, but have met several people through this forum who have become good pals! I also know of one or 2 people who were in your boat that have now met a wide range of people in the area after coming along to a drink up. Next venue is yet to be confirmed, but it'll be on Friday 3rd October. A thread will be put up in the Lounge area of this forum when the venue has been agreed. Oh, and greetings! :)-D

For the record, I went to all boys (with sister school down the road), former grammar school that became one of the "City Technology Colleges" created by the tories. 6th form was mixed. Having said all that, I believe it's totally mixed now. Anyway, we were streamed in to 4 sets, 2 "higher", 2 "lower". The 2 higher sets were also different. One was made up of the kids expected to do better at maths and science type subjects, whilst the other (my set) was more English and arty subjects. I think streaming can be good. I was never great at maths (meaning I found it horrifically boring and couldn't be arsed), so was put in the intermediate set for GCSE level. This is a good thing, as I would have been out of my depth at higher level. Likewise, I was better at English, and was put in the higher group for that. Aaaanyway, back to the seperate schools. If this were to go ahead, surely it wouldn't be long before chinese people wanted chinese schools, and indian people wanted indian schools and so on... I just can't believe that anyone has come up with this idea, it's rubbish! There are things that need addressing, and stats show that black boys are doing least well at school, but if they are receiving the same education as the kids doing better, surely this suggests that the schooling isn't really the problem!

Sounds pretty good to me. Another result would be that house prices in areas such as East Dulwich wouldn't be stupidly inflated as a result of parents buying in catchment areas! (well actually, it wouldn't make much difference in Dulwich, because it's all primary schools, but you get the drift).

Limewire is okay, there is spyware on there, but It's easily spotted. I basically use it to try a couple of tracks out before I spend oz money on the album, which I always will if I like the tunes.

Bold move Georgia, bold move!

Australian house guest has the summer heights high box set, so watched the first 3 episodes last night. Absolute feckin gold! Have yet to see FofC but same house guest and another friend have highly recommended it!

The Rye is nice, but in my opinion it's too small / narrow for a big bunch of us to really get in and mingle.

Just please let him stay free of big injuries, or we'll have another Owen.

Not sure if this should be a new thread, but I'll try it here first. Last night I heard moral maze on Radio 4, and they were talking about the proposed opening of all black schools, where black kids would be taught by black people about black issues. The arguements for included things like, it will improve their self identity and self respect. I'd not heard about this before last night, and don't know how likely it is, but surely it would be a total disaster!?!?!? Of course people need identity, but surely we are all living together in this country, and we don't need to be seperated in to different groups, and surely this will be a huge step back! As I said above, I believe that the way to beat racism is to make the differences go away, not make them even more obvious!

I think replies to Dave's posts have been more hostile. Anyway, you are right of course that gay people aren't going around hitting straights for kissing, but then maybe that goes back to my numbers and what is the social norm theory. For my part, James and I both agreed about a year ago that anyone kissing in public should be removed from view!

Everyone is being rather nce to Liverpool, have you seen our record against ManU?

I call people c**t all the time, and I'm not a c**t :-S This thread is annoying. DaveR has been jumped on for everything he's saying, and actually he's saying valid things. He never suggested you could chose your sexuality, and I didn't read his post as Sean and Jah did (the whole short skirt = asking for it angle). This is a decent subject to discuss, but frankly I think it's difficult when James (and some others) tends to sceam homophobe at anyone who questions something he says (sorry James, I think you seem a nice fella, but you do like to play the victim sometimes). I think I said this on another thread, but for my part I suspect that homophobia will always be different to racism, because sex is still somewhat tabboo. Lets be totally honest, most straight men, however accepting of gay people they may be, will cringe at the thought of kissing another man, let alone having sex with him. It's a more base feeling, and for those that aren't accepting of gay people, it can rise up as rather ugly homophobia. Racism is different, it's based on many things, but I don't think anything so natural as sexuality! Maybe it's all just as simple as numbers... There are lots and lots of black people, asian people, white people etc living in London (and all over the UK, but nowhere like London). When you go to school as a 4 or 5 year old, and half your class are a different colour to you, it's not going to seem weird, it'll just be normal. For the most part, I agree with James' initial post. I don't know really, just a couple of thoughts.

Hmm fair point, think I've only ever been on Sunday afternoons.

Sean, I have to talke slight issue with your point that people choose their religion. Not always mate, some people are brought up with it, and it can be very very difficult to shake off a way of life!

I'd vote for the mag in it's new form, the CPT in it's new form, or Bar Story.

People that just stop in the middle of the pavement for no apparent reason. And people that like to have a chat in the supermarket isles, and tut you because you want the item in the fridge they have sat up camp at!

What jeremy said!

Cassius I'm sorry if you thought you were gee for a higher purpose, but that's the way I look at life. I did say that I have plenty of fun, but I don't think there i a point as such. Anyway, meaning of life thread this isn't.

I'd imagine on the actual street, but who knows... Didn't the OP say there are already foundations for them there?

I'm no longer worried about it being attractive to thieves, because we have CCTV! ;-)
