  1. Don't go out with no door the Sqautters are about, and you have lost your home.
  2. Stuart MacLennan. Labour Csndidate has his views about our older generation they are in his own words " Coffin Dodgers ". You might think to yourself thats not me! But once you are pensionable age you are a " Coffin Dodger " Some may think they are a drain on the Pensions Scheme. But as in my own case I started to pay the deduction from 1945, to 1996 that means I have contributed for some 51 years. Could it be the case he is thinking about is the new foreign workers who come here and are given the jobs before our own out of work? Who will get the full pension regardless of any contribution. He has now been sacked from the Dunfirmlin Labour Party.
  3. Did you Know? There were public shelters in most towns, but many people built Anderson shelters in their gardens so that they had protection if they were unable to get to the public shelter. Anderson shelters were made out of corrugated iron and were very strong. A hole was dug in the garden, then the shelter was placed in the hole and it was covered with earth. An air-raid siren warned people when a raid was about to begin. The government tried to confuse the German bombers by enforcing a 'blackout'. Street lamps were switched off, car headlights had to be covered and people had to hang black material in their windows at night so that house lights could not be seen. Going out at night could be dangerous during the blackout; cars crashed into each other and pedestrians, people walked into each other, fell off bridges or fell into ponds. After May 1941, the bombing raids became less frequent as Hitler turned his attention to Russia. Nevertheless, the effects of the Blitz were devastating. 60,000 people lost their lives, 87,000 were seriously injured and 2 million homes were destroyed. copyright Activities.
  4. This is the Plaque in Lordship Lane
  5. Hi Collette. Your message prompted me to look for old letters that I have, one is in fact a letter I wrote from my new home as an evacuee, as it was decided to get the three of us younger children away from London, we had already been in the house when a bomb dropped behind our back garden wall burying us in the house debris. As the Vi Flying Bomb ( Doodle Bug ) had droped just fifteen houses away from our own house, Mum thought it was time we left for safety sake. 22.8.1944. This V1 in Lordship Lane fell on the West side just South of the junction with Townley Road. One person was killed. It demolished 20 houses in Lordship lane and damaged 130 others in Lordship Lane, Beauval Road and Heber Road. The impact site is very clear to see particularly on the West side of Lordship Lane where the site is still partly populated with pre-fabs. My own memories are still very vivid of that time, but I moved away from London in 1976 so I do not know of the present area or how it has changed in these 34 years. It would not be possible for me to come to your school as I live so far distant now, but I could if you do not get an other offer write a peice about it as seen as a child all those years ago. I left school aged fourteen. Heber Road School. Class grades in those days were Infants / Junior / Seniors. What age are your intended pupils? Regards Shorty.
  6. Did you have any "must dos" before you kick the bucket? The two women walked slowly by, pushing their buggies chatting away pausing long enough to let the man dump things from the house into the rubbish skip. ? He?s gone you know! ? ? Who? ?That old bloke who lived alone here, he was trying to trace his old school pals and neighbours, never found any still alive though, he had outlived all of them even his family, no relations at all.? ? Why did he want to find them ? ? Dunno spose he wanted to leave all his things to some one. ? ? That?s the Council clearing out all his stuff, they said it has to go to the dump as they cant find out if he had a relation.? ?Did you hear the glass breaking two nights ago? Some Hooddies broke in a nicked his telly and computer, its been wide open ever since.? ? Did anyone call the police? Don?t think so they don't want to get involved .? ? Look at those papers the wind is blowing them out of the skip,? She picks one up from the pavement it?s a photo of a family group, gone brown with age. ? They might be his family must be a long time ago, look there is tram lines there! ? ? Yes and a horse and cart .? ? There is his neighbour there I am going to ask him.? ? Shame about your neighbour Mr Green. Did you know him very well? ? ? Not really he had only come back about eight months ago, he had moved away in 1976, said he had come to sort out something.? ? What happened to him? ? ? He went up the shops and get his pension, but tripped over, one of the shop staff brought him home in their car. I looked in later but he could not use his right arm, and he had fallen on the floor, I dialled 999 and they took him off. I locked up for him. And phoned the Hospital latter but they would not tell me anything as I am not related to him.? ? A man from the Council knocked on my door next day and asked if I knew of his relatives, and said he had died. The doctor had told him he was very ill, so the hospital doctors were not surprised. He had said that as he had not got anybody or expect anybody to attend his funeral he would donate his body to the Hospital, he got that idea from his computer. He liked things to be sorted so he booked a funeral anyway and paid up front. ? ? Isn't it a shame to see, all his lifetime belongings just getting thrown in there and breaking and getting wet, look those must be the unopened milk bottles that have been delivered on his step since. That must be the lot now the driver is putting the tarpaulin sheet over the skip. ? The driver fits the lifting chains to the skip. ? Hang on a minute mate! ? One of the men runs out and shoves a aluminium Zimmer under the sheet, the skip raises and plonks onto the lorry, with ropes tied the driver drives away a bulge is just distinguishable under the tarpaulin that Zimmer has had its last walk??

  8. Narnia Not only did ladymuck say this it is here copied and pasted that I haven't actually achieved very much on this earth...compared with others. Perhaps you might be more careful of your own opinions. What have you achieved to give your advice?
  9. Ladymuck. If you think that you have haven't actually achieved very much on this earth...compared with others. Then change direction do something new. You might find that you have been pushed into a job that you really dont like. This has happened to me but I just left the job, looking back now it was for the best. Later in life you can look back and think well I did make my mark, it might not be obvious now, as you have only got halfway. Puts down Keats, picks up Jobs offered.
  10. Our Dog had passed away but his kennel still remains beside the front door, if an unknown person calls I open the door slightly with the dogs chain lead showing in my hand, knock the door with my knee, and say sorry the dog is trying to get at you! They leave quite quickly. You could put a Romany sign at your entrance giving warning of a dog. Or put a notice so. Rikono
  11. The Tower Cinema site has part of the Tower encased in a cage this has two reasons one is to protect any person passing underneath it from falling masonary, and still preserving part of the original Tower. The side walls are shared part of the cinema, and to remove them might weaken the adjoining premises, having these remain, ensures that the site has not been cleared of all buildings, this is a planning issue. There are many webs relating to Peckham, but the same thing happens there should a member try to give memories of that area He/She are rebuked as having copied and pasted material from other places, and so the person who tries to help just does not bother to continue doing it. As many of these webs charge a Membership fee they are not popular, and tend to lose activity. This is a shame as there must be so many who would love to reminis those past times. The Peckham area is not part of EDF. A Thread could be made for those who want it, but that is up to Admin if asked might allow it. Has anybody any view on this?
  12. !925. It was not blitzed, demolished at the end of the cinema era. In 1920s there were five cinemas on Rye Lane alone. The Tower Cinema closed in 1956.
  13. This was the entrance to The Tower Cinema, named as the Tower that stood high towering over the nearby shops, from Rye Lane up a flight of marble stairs to a large area, there the tickets were purchased, and the entrance to the lower Auditorium, there the organ would be played before the film show, there were several columns that if you were seated behind them blocked your view, the circle was up more stairs, leading from the area where the shop selling cigarettes and confactionery. This was the larger of the Peckham Cinemas. The cellars were used as Air Raid Shelters in the second world war including my family, the entrance was from the rear car park. if an Air Raid warning had been sounded there was a slide that showed over the film saying that a Raid had started you are invited to use the Air Raid Shelters below. There was another cinema Between Choumert Road and Sternhall Lane called The Tower Annex. Later a Royal Arsenal Co-operative clothing store.

  17. Can you prove if the 176 is solitary? They are often multiple as found awaiting a number 176 bus.
  18. What does E. Dulwich not have? Morris Dancers. Just been to the Help the Aged Club. They are trying to form a Morris Dance Group, only thing is that they all use Zimmer?s. Sounds silly but not to them. Needs seven members, and a musician, Fiddle, Drums, Pipes, or any mobile instrument. Oh and a fully qualified First Aider, that?s just for the Dancers. They are thinking of showing somewhere along the London Marathon Route. Just to raise some cash for Charity. If it takes off they might try Zimmer Racing. Or Zimmer on Ice Dancing. All done by other clubs. Look at the Wheelchair Formations. Can you support a Zimmer Dancer?
  19. Better be prepared for a few surprises. This is one book offred by Lisby90 The Element Encyclopedia of witchcraft. You cant have the Bonfire outside The Castle. Can it be the Dulwich?
  20. Its a scam they are just trying to trace him, to pay rent, his claim is he was only squatting.
  21. Postal Gold advert on TV. Do you think that anybody sending gold to them will get the real worth of their gold? Just count how many times that they put on the Postal Gold Advert, these costs make your gold offered as far less. You might do better dropping into your local Uncle.
