Dairy on Goodrich Road (many years ago)
computedshorty replied to Timster's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hello Ian. Doubt if you remember me. John died and Bill died a short time after of a broken heart as his mum Ada had asked him to look after him after his devorce, he had lived facing the Crystal Palace Road Police Station they moved to Hull Court near the George Canning. Bill was my Best Man, he and John were drunk for days our cars were left outside St Clements Church Friern Road for days. Your dad Peter was living in Casino Av Red Post Hill he tried to contact me of their death, I did not find out for two years as I had long moved away. Your mum is French her brother often came over to see them in his Police uniform. Your Grand Dad Stan was a short man he was in the Army. Good to hear from you my quest is now complete. Speak Later. -

This is Kenny Jenkins Lanchester Car at the Chinbrook Pub. Those in the picture Ken, Pete, Ron Amoss, ( he lived in that building that burnt, called Lukenau House on the Seaux Estate ), Longey. It was Doctors Hunter & Pitman, they moved to Lordship Lane but it got bombed so they moved down to the corner of Townley Road. I reemember the Coal Merchant right up the other end of the road he also hired out those Barrows that the market stall holders had. I remember Pauline Snashfold lived behind the Crystal Palace pub, first house in Darrell Road, married Freddy Btritain. I'm still looking for old photo's. we did not take many in those days. Speak latter. -

The buildings at the cross roads at Lordship Lane, Barry Road, and Eynella Road, have changed so much in the last century, The attached picture is the old buildings opposite the St Thomas Moore R.C Church Lordship Lane , in the background can be seen the Christ Church Barry Road . In those days there were shops in the same place, as today. Today the site 397, 399, 401 Lordship Lane SE22, comprises of Costcutter , D.V.R. , Badger Bakery. The ( Passmore Edwards ) Dulwich Library, was damaged in the second world war, there were for the duration two brick flat roofed Air Raid Shelters built in the grounds, one in the corner of the gardens further away from the main building at a gate in Eyenella Road, the other facing Lordship Lane , the latter one was converted into public toilets, they have been removed now. The Lordship Lane R.C Church was damaged several times as many bombs dropped nearby, the Vicarage behind was quite damaged. The Post Office during the war was in the row of shops in Woodwarde Road next to the Alley way that went through to Lordship Lane. -
Turning forty. So far most are preparing to become over forty, and ask what changes will happen to them or their family. If I can look back half my lifetime, I don't think I have worried much as to what would happen to me at any age, if it was going to happen then San fairy Ann, I got this attitude from my time in the war, I was bombed, buried in the debris, shot at, fallen from buildings, been a passenger in several vehicles when they smashed, been in Hospital several times, five and a half years taken involuntary from my life serving the King & Queen. Worked in jobs that I disliked so left as they were just repartition., a waste of my life. I have never wanted or had a new car, I have not been on holiday for over fifty years. At sixty five I resigned from all the Local History Society, Military Associations, Preservation Society, Classic Car, Postcard Collectors, Old Comrades Club. This I thought would give me the time to do the things that I wanted to for years. What you cant foresee is your own heath, once that starts to fail you are then restricted to where you can get to, and how to get there. Along the way not only do you loose your parents, your brothers and sisters, those school chums and those you had in the army, and their children, you are alone. You fall into a pigeon hole, That old bloke is in the way again. If I decide that I will do something I will do it. At seventy I decided I was going to write a book , I went to a College and enquired if I could learn as a mature student to use the computer as I had never seen one, let alone used one , I sat two one year courses, wrote several books just for my own close friends. Contacted the former Clubs and the other Societies and now write their monthly newsletters. I am more occupied than ever before. The future? I write myself a list of things I will do the next day, as soon as I wake up I get up as I feel better not in bed, although it might takes me a while to get ready. The only advice I can give is, be content use your life to the full, don't expect things to come to you, go and get them, work hard to get that extra thing and once you have it you are content that it is yours you worked for it. I find that should I owe something to a person I go well out of my way to pay that back. Even just a few pence. I used to get told off constantly if a friend admired a thing of mine I would give it to them my wife would say ?You will give me away next!" I have even booked my own Funeral and paid for it. ( Just in Case it is ever needed ). With my luck I will probably live for ever and never get my monies worth back.

Hi John. I remember Sids dad he used to stand on the stone steps in his vest and braces, his mum lost nearly all her teeth, just one Pickle chaser showing in the front, she used to bang away on the piano, but could not play. You would have lived opposite the Fish & Chip Shop. when you moved do you remember on the corner of Pellatt Road the Doctors? I remember Brenda her brother Eric was my age, ( I understand his wife commited suicide ), and the Filkins, & Lenny Davis, the Cars, the Holmans. two Westcombe girls. Do you remember John Sissons his mum was a Park Keeper used to ride a bike and wore a kind of Cowboy hat. You must remember Kenny Jenkins he had a Lanchester car, preselect gear change, he never bought more than a gallon of petrol we would all have to cough up to buy some to get home. The school was mostly empty as the kids had been evacuated, only a handful of us left in class I think there was only about three teachers then. One had a stif leg he had I think been invalided out of the forces, he was the sports teacher. I think you are more the age of my twin brother & sister Brian & Sheiler. they were born in 1938. I cant remember what happend to those houses where the back of the Police Station is now I know that there was a few missing in Lordhip Lane, those that remaind were propped up. Was that corner shop selling motor bikes? I like to hear other peoples memories -

This is the reverse of that picture. I still have the documents that we had to adhere to doing the Tests. The Austin was an unregistered car for demonstration only for the Press. These all show the Men doing the test are in white coats.

This is a trick I have used many times get several plastic shopping bags put them one inside the other fill the now thick bag with water about three pints, tie them at the top securely, they now look like a balloon full of water, remove the drain cover, you will sometimes find that the pipe from the building enters the drain also from here, so lower the bag filled with water it will pass the other pipes, once in contact with the water pump up and down, it will make a seal to the shape of the drain pipe, you could use a mop careful not to make a hole on the bag, the water will go but there will be a scum left around the inside of the pipe you will have to bail that out, if left it will act as a key to build up a blockage again. This is the quickest way to clear a paper filled toilet basin.

Quote Pour sugar into your petrol tank, then when they use it will screw their engines up for good. This seems a bit too much of self sacrifice to also Screw up your own Motorbike. -
