This one I don't get, that the gene replication 'matters' is imbuing meaning. Surely it doesn't matter whether or not my gene is passed on. Suggesting that there is import in the continuation of life or that there is some significance in pursuing life's imperatives is falling into the same trap, perhaps minus the angst. It still suggests 'design'. Not sure really what I'm getting at, I'm not trying to rehash the god thread, I guess I'm just wondering whether our footprints, our echoes, our ripples....well...matter.

Nice, overuse of cliched americanisms, good, liking your style. I'm sure you'll find another hotbed of far-leftism to bother soon. -

Rick Channing - troll: "I see, so now you've resorted to the hallmark of the defeated: name calling. It's pitiful, but at least it shows that you're unable to reasonably refute any argument for [insert argument here]." http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,724536,724639#msg-724639 -

Well if you really do, on your conscience be it I guess. We've all got families to feed, but those of us who are good at we do can pick and choose our jobs. I wouldn't do it, I genuinely consider Xe immoral, but each to their own. My wife was working for BAe systems when we met, she was uncomfortable about it, and once she talked about her reservations, well, she left there within days and since her career has soared. Maybe a change would be for the good in every sense of the word. -

Liberals or lefties? Come on, consistency. -
I guess the corollary to the 'is there a god' thread is that if there isn't then there is no meaning to anything. The intellectual part of me is capable of being ok with that, the emotional one gets why we need 'something more' especially when awaiting the impending and untimely loss of family and friends. I 'get' that we imbue our lives and our relationships with meaning by their very nature, but I guess without some sort of still centre by which to measure everything else from, and given the intrinsically fleeting nature of our existence, it's all, well, meaningless, it doesn't matter. Or does it, does it matter if some historian rifles through my life or if somehow I leave some sort of legacy...I dunno, no answer to this thread anymore than there is for its freakish sister thread.

Nice to see you keeping a civil tongue. Don't worry I'm thoroughly convinced that a change of name after a vicious massacre means that it's 'different', but anyway that's now three times in a pretty short span, I call troll. -

Plus Blackwater, really? That sounds like a wind up to me, planted to try and raise the hackles of the 'far left', which makes me suspect troll, but these two posts apart I don't think I give a shit enough to care. Welcome to the edf, I hope you raise your game and have fun. -

You are delightful rick. No one has defined you except you, who have apparently come here as a refuge from a far left dominated board and then accused this of being a cosy far left board. Strikes me that such coincidence points to you rather than the nature of the world. This board has a huge engagement of contributors with original and intelligent thoughts who think for themselves. This means simplistic answers tend to be few and far between. If the lack of dogma from either the right or the left makes you want to define this place, that has a lack of concordance with your opinion, as far left, then most will probably suspect that you are, in a dipolar manner, revealing yourself to be that which you just projected others of defining you as. In all fairness, as much as left or right means anything these days, this place is probably more left than right, but all are represented and most of the good ones are multifaceted, flexible and considered in their thoughts rather than driven by stringent or idiotic ideology. And for the record I too am an immigrant, therefore part of the problem, so I guess you can discount my entire post. ;-P. Oh and huguenot, spot on, my thoughts exactly!! -
Does anything matter? Really?

Eek, I'm just watching 'my favourite joke' on bbc3 and I've a suspicion that pretty much every thing I think was the fault of Dave Allen. Still, I'm happy enough with that.......sharp guy!!

Mind you, california was originally mexico's so I guess you could just say they're taking it back. I'd love to hear your exact definition of 'far left', somewhere between 'reasonable' and 'doesn't agree with you' I'm guessing. -

"We have a great chance to reclaim the streets - please dont waste it by going soft again" There was a really good article posted up by someone or other on another riot thread about the failure of the state to monopolise violence in the face of new technology and the resultant democratisation of violence, well worth a read.

When you were young school holidays lasted forever and now the time flies by sadly too quickly. Weirdly, just this once, I can't wait for them to end *rolls eyes heavenwards....again...* -
"It happened nearly 650 years ago in this city" Interestingly I drove down Wat Tyler Road on the way to Southend Airport the other day. Of course back in those days 'hanging's too good for 'em' was quite literal and generally followed by slicing them up and shoving their heads on a spike. Mind you I can't see there being a road named after the nameless looter any time soon and Wat and co not only had legitimate grievances but a cogent set of demands.

Little things you've found yourself wondering, after reading the EDF.

Fair point, I haven't been for a while though free fridays are few and far between these days. Mind you either a)no one listens to a word I say (or it feels like that sometimes) or b)i don't really have confrontations with people, I just suffer from an ailment whereby my eyes seem to be constantly rolling heavenwards ;-) I should make the effort though. -
LOL!!

anarchic would work.

Trish, that's one of the reasons that regular posters were encouraged to attend the forum drinks. Knowing each other in the real world often helps to temper some of the confrontational nature of online interaction. For instance I often though mr carnell there was an insufferable prig. Now I think he's an insufferable prig who is a delightful chap to have a beer with ;) Some of the more hardline were conspicuous by their continued absence. -
or just link to it Rosie.
