  1. Long and winding road - The Beatles
  2. You may be onto something there, we do have a draft problem...you may have found a solution to our woes, fingers crossed!
  3. Thanks, sanity girl, I plan on giving this a try, although someone mentioned on my (equally dull) washer dryer thread that this may lead to rotting soft furnishings, as the moisture remains in the atmosphere :-S
  4. Is this the most boring post for a Friday? Probably... ...as the days/nights are getting cooler condensation has started to appear on our windows. We live in a Victorian flat with single glazing and when it's really cold we wake in the morning to find condensation running down our windows and pooling on the window sills (this happens even in the rooms we are not sleeping in). The window sill in our bedroom is getting damaged as a result. I don't think we generate any more moisture than the average 3 person family - yesterday, for example, the windows were open all day, two showers, one baby bath, kettle boiled a few times, rice boiled for 10mins, no laundry out to dry, had the dehumidifier on and still there was condensation on the windows this morning and the night wasn't even that cold. Any advice as to what we can do to reduce the amount of condensation on our windows, apart from leaving the windows open all day (too wasteful if the heating is on and no good when we're at work)? Thanks

  6. My Favourite Nursery on Upland Road may have places for Feb. They opened relatively recently and so when I last enquired they weren't full. The babies and children seemed very happy there, so much so that my daughter will be starting at the end of Jan, at which time she will be 1y. Good luck!
  7. Favourite 'toys' - remote control, mobile phones, flex leads, washing intruction labels on anything, hairbrush, paper (the more important it is to mummy and daddy the better) Favourite proper toys - Sophie the giraffe (we have the mushroom version), all books, boing ball, Lamaze toys Least favourite - furry teddies/cuddly toys - I guess the just don't taste as good as the others We only have one toy with music and flashy lights (just the way it's worked out, not conscious decision) and my daughter is equally interested in this as the other favourite toys. Maybe put some of the toys away for a while (a week or so) and then when you re-introduce them they will seem like new to your son?

  10. Great advice re: temporary glazing, will definitely give that a go. We already have a dehumidifier, which runs nearly constantly throughout the winter :'( and now we have a baby our laundry frequency will increase. I think we may give the washer dryer a try, my parents have one so I know that they don't dry completely and only take small loads but if we can get rid of some of the moisture then it may save our window frames and sills, not to mention the mould, yuk!
  11. Great, thanks! Unfortunately, a separate tumble dryer is not an option due to space. However, I think we definitely need a washer dryer as the condensation just pours down the windows in winter!
  12. Boring topic for a glorius Friday but my washing machine has performed the death rattle and is no longer working. It would be great to buy a washer dryer but I need some silly questions answered! Can washer dryers be easily installed in flats without major plumbing work? Where does the outlet hose go? Thanks!

  15. I know three people very well who have had very different upbringings from birth-5y: Me: lived with my grandfather and aunt for 18 months in a country that was going through a civil war, whilst parents were in England and couldn't get me out of the country. My mum missed my 2nd birthday and both my parents missed my 4th birthday. My relatives, however, were amazing to me and I was oblvious to all the troubles going on. My brother: at childminders/nursery from 4 months as my mum had to return to work (no idea what the maternity 'rights' were like in the 80's); my dad was commuting from Surrey to Hertfordshire every day so was hardly around during our waking hours. My husband: his mum stayed at home full time and brought up him and his elder sister (I think they went to a few sessions of nursery once they were 3). All 3 of us have really close relationships with each other and our parents and (IMO) are well adjusted members of society. I don't know how much of it's nature or nuture but I believe that as long as children are brought up in a loving, caring environment by adults (whether it be by stay-at-home-mum/dad, nursery, childminder or a combination) who spend time and talk to them then they will be generally fine. They will definitely know who their parents are even if they only spend quality time with them at the weekends (or in my case longer). Good luck - I think it will be a stressful experience no matter how many reassurances you get; I'm dreading it! Parenthood seems to be a case of doing your best whilst wishing you could do better :-S
