Ladygooner Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Pleased to report Jubilee Line seems to be running > well although very overcrowded.......... This afternoon it was hellish - with most people under the impression that my carriage was actually the Tardis with infinitely expandable space inside despite the evident crush. Stopping for 15 mins outside Westminster added to the fun.

I recently attended a "back to bridge" weekend which was excellent and revived my interest in the game. There is a bridge club in Dulwich - run by Zebedee Stocken - I'm planning to attend the Tuesday evening starters class from 2 Oct and received message below. Contact details are: [email protected] DULWICH BRIDGE - restarting Wednesday September 26th Hello Everybody! I hope you have had a great summer and are looking forward to the return of Dulwich Bridge. I have sent out a mailshot which you should receive soon. This term there will be a Tuesday evening Beginners class (7pm starting October 2nd). Please tell all your non-bridge playing friends about it. There will also be the usual Supervised Play sessions (Tuesday 6-9pm & Wed 1-3pm) plus Intro to Duplicate (Wed 10.15am - 12.45pm & 7-9.30pm). I am hoping to run more Modern Bridge Saturdays but at time of going to press, the pub has provisional bookings every Saturday... but I am still hopeful and will keep you posted (by email). I look forward to seeing you in October, best wishes Zeb Stocken Portobello Bridge P.S. If you haven't received your mailshot by the end of next week, please get in touch.

I was idly considering various small 1950's developments in the area recently when it occurred to me that many must have been built on pockets of bomb damage. I know that a bomb fell at the bottom of my garden in Marmora Road and can see a possible "line of damage" across Marmora, Mundania and Therapia roads. I understand thatsomewhere thers is a anotated map of the bombs that fell in the ED area - can anyone advise me on its whereabouts - I haven't tried the library yet but will.

No. 63 to Kings X - approx 60 minutes if you catch one before 8.00am - after that can add a further 10 - 20 mins to journey times.

The East Dulwich WI would be a good place to find an organiser for such a produce show - in all the villages I've lived in (3 real ones and few psuedo) the WI had an active role in every fete. There was a thread about them at one stage - but don't know who / how to contact

Bob, Thanks. I started to do this - produced a starter for 10 website on iWeb, then hit the install button - this prompted me to enter registration details - did that, name and password were verified and then - nothing. It may be that the website has been created but I cannot locate it? If it has I also need some guidance on how to find it, edit it and direct others to it. As I said at the beginning - a good book "idiot's guide" type style would be a help. Cheers Ian / MM

In order to share my "wormery" development (earlier thread) I thought I'd establish a website with pictures - but interpreting the Apple Mac advice / instructions on how to do this has proved difficult. I'm IT literate but not, always, IT competent. Can anyone advise me of a good book or a local advisor that could help me. Once shown the way I'll probably be OK - it's my first faltering steps I need help with.

Having organised school fetes and helped out at village fetes the Peckham Rye fete had the authentic air of a volunteer managed, non commercial effort (and I mean that as a compliment). Would be great next year to have a "village / community prize show" where cooks can show off their best jam / cake / bread, allotment holders and gardeners show off their prize leeks, marigolds marrows, WI members their best flower arrangement, school children best picture and so on. This is always fun and has the added advantage of bringing in more punters. Good to see Green & Blue present - would have been nice to have seen other retailers offering samples / tasters - good for them and good for the crowd.

Traffic Lights @ Forest Hill Road
Marmora Man replied to Mrs Y's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have just sent the following e-mail to Southwark Council - they can be contacted at: [email protected] "Sir / Madam, Traffic lights have recently been installed at the junction of Colyton Road and Forest Hill Road in East Dulwich. The lights have been operative for less than a week but have already had a negative impact on traffic flows along Forest Hill Road and Peckham Rye. Traffic now backs up regularly as far as the Forest Hill Tavern to the south and almost to East Dulwich Road / Peckham Rye junction to the north. This never happened before and is creating delays for all users but, most importantly, public transport is slowed dramatically and cyclists are obliged to cycle on the dangerous offside of vehicles if they are to pass the stationary queuing traffic. The minor extra convenience for cars turning onto Forest Hill Road / Peckham Rye from Colyton Road / Dunstans Road cannot, surely, outweigh these facts. To the best of my knowledge there was no consultation about installing these lights; there appears to be no overriding need for lights at that junction so the rationale for their installation is not clear. I would be grateful for more information on the decision to install traffic lights at this junction." Suggest we all bombard Southwark Council with similar letters / e-mails and see if we can reverse, or at least learn more about, this ridiculous decision. -
Traffic Lights @ Forest Hill Road
Marmora Man replied to Mrs Y's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Mrs Y - you beat me to it. I was intending to post on this subject. The lights have already created larger tailbacks on Forest Hill Road than before. Whiel, occasionally, getting out of Colyton Road could be difficult - it did work when drivers co-operated (cf CitezenED's point). Somehwre in London I believe tere is an experiement where all traffic signs, road markings, rails and bollards have been emoved. Impact - everyone has to proceed at a pace that allows them to assess the situation without any presumption of right of way - with the result of improving safety and traffic flow. Who do we petition for their removal? -

Spadetownboy - I'm intrigued by the whole story. Where in the cemetry (roughly) is the grave? I occassionally use the cemetry for a short, breath of fresh air, walk from Marmora Road. -
> It suprises me that nobody has opened a wagamama > style noodle bar round here, some relaxed, quick > served Ramen, Sushi etc would be most welcome (or > am I 5 years out of date here?) The Noodle Bar opposite Mrs Robinsons is an early version of Waggamammas and much cheaper. Not bad nosh either

Il Giardino (restaurant in peckham)
Marmora Man replied to spanish-archer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Went a couple of weeks ago for the first time, in response to posts on this site. I echo char1ie - good without being outstanding. The VFM equation works well, not costly, local, comforting food - cooked with care but not aspiring to become a No.1 Italian eaterie. Seemed buzzy, friendly - with couples, families and singletons all mixing well in a rather small room. Would return. Convenient if you've been to the cinema across the road. -
As long as there are more than two - it's OK. "Twa Corbies" in scottish speak (aka gaelic) is apparently a warning of doom!!!!!

The AK47 solution appeals to me but my wife is more caring. Tho' I suspect it may be easier to source an AK47 than Lion Poo in the immediate locality. Apart from London Zoo - where do I go for lion poo - don't say Africa!

Apparently at BRockwell Fusion have taken / been give a 30 year lease on the Lido and are investing their own capital (and other monies from Lambeth Council / Lottery etc) to upgrade and improve - expecting to see a return over their 30 year's tenure. At East Dulwich they have simply a management contract with Southwark council and no control, or even say, over capital investments. That said - Southwark Council is planning to invest ?5M in ED lesiure centre.

Our Wiggly Wiggler wormery is about to be commissioned - will update you on progress after a month. We used WW worms to bring life back to a dead garden. It was overgrown, unkempt and uncared for. The soil was solid - and nary a worm, bug or any other form of smal life was to be seen. The addition of a ton or two of top soil and then a large sack of worms placed in strategic holes all around the garden worked. Whenever we dig now we see worms aerating the soil and plant life seems to flourish. On a related subject - gardens - how do I keep cats and foxes from using it as a litter tray?? Tried sonic scarers, costa fortune in batteries and don't seem to work. Any other solutions out there?

So your sister's > right. Anyway you're a former whisky barman so you > know this! Use whisky as medicine - it disinfects the upper throat and prevents colds and virus taking hold. Recommended dose - about two fingers + splash of cold water as a prophylatic measure, if condition more serious the addition of lemon, honey & hot water to cooking (ie non single malt) is recommended - it either cures the problem or ensures you don't care. Of course this may count as alternative / complementary medicine and enrage Richard Dawkins and other rationalists (of which I usually count myself - but not on this issue)

As per Ultraconsultancy above - best is Dragon Castle at Elephant & castle. Also agree with him about Pizzeria Castello - a sad loss to the area and a definite downside to the regeneration plans. A few pints at the original Firkin pub "Goose & Firkin" followed by a pizza & glass of wine at Castello's was a perfect night out in the mid 80's.

We recently had some work done in the house and needed a skip for the rubbish it generated. We experienced the usual problems of half he street using "our" skip to dispose of their rubbish - but then also watched with amusement as it turned into a kind of Swap Shop - over a period of three weeks waste went in from many soucres, someone would rifle through and extract, more waste in, more goods out. Old doors, old chairs, metal fittings - in the end we had one skip of rubbish but it had been almost emoptied and refilled several times.
