have taken a gap year - which is still outstanding 30 years later. Time off at the beginning of a career / life is easier.

As a life long non smoker but also libertarian I was in two minds about the ban. Good to enjoy a quiet pint / meal in a smoke free atmosphere but bad that it needed a new, repressive law to make it happen. In practice it seems to be going well except that instead of stopping smoking, smokers instead filled the pub gardens and attractive outside tables in restaurants. A neat illustration of the law of unintended consequences. Now that autumn is here, and winter not far away, how will smokers cope and will the ban start to affect smoking habits and prevalence?

Just relaxing after long day, reflecting on the difficulties inherent in managing "star players". Feeling better after a large Laphroaig + splash of water. Tomorrow's mission statement - Illegitimi non carborundum!

Since July '04 - moving in with two teenagers and two parents-in-law. The only area of London that could supply the space I needed at a price I could afford (albeit I'm still shelling out to complete the makeover). Therefore I arrived here by serendipity (what a lovely word) rather than careful planning but glad I've arrived.

Today's mission statement is: Well I think we should all have a nice cup of tea and some biscuits, nice ones mind you. Oh and some cake would be nice as well. Aahh lovely! What will tomorrow's be?

Traffic Lights @ Forest Hill Road
Marmora Man replied to Mrs Y's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Mrs Y Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- Because I believe it's a fact that throughout the borough, no transformed traffic junctions where lights have > subsequently been installed have ever been reinstated. Judging by the comments posted so far, the overwhelming majority would like the zebra's restored and in three years time when everyone's used to the lights, will the argument still be as > strong. I think there should be some form of binding agreement from the council and Thames Water to this effect. I contacted the Council on this issue. See question and answer below (was also posted on 11 Sept). It appears that the Council will have to make a case for retaining the lights - but only intends to consult the Community Council. In my experience that means reporting an intention to the CC and, in the absence of vociferous objections, carrying on with their plans. We will need to ensure the CC understand the volume of objections to these lights. Does anyone know of anyone on the CC for this area?? To: Southwark Council: There is some concern that these temporary lights could become permanent. Is there a fail safe mechanism that will ensure their removal unless positive action is taken to make them permanent ? or, as I fear, is it the other way around? That unless positive action is taken to ensure their removal then, inertia and general bureaucratic laziness will result in them becoming permanent. From: Southwark Council: I have been passed your e-mail and asked to respond to the query The lights are temporary and funded both for the installation and the ongoing maintenance by Thames Water while the tunnel works for the ring main are in progress. At the end of this period the lights will be removed unless a case is made for their retention on the grounds that the arrangement is better than reverting to the previous arrangement. To establish this will require monitoring of the usage plus consultation with interested parties including the Community Council. [My italics] If it is decided to keep the lights then the maintenance cost will pass to Southwark as part of its payment to TfL covering all the traffic lights in Southwark. Thames Water works are due to complete in March 2010 but we expect the lorry usage to diminish before so the lights will be being review about the end of 2009. Reading all this chat has made me hungry & thirsty - I'm going to vote with my feet, brave the ankle biters and have a cup of mint tea and a bun at Chandelier right now. -

Insecticide does nothing for midges - if it did the entire West Coast of Scotland would have used it by now.

New Chandelier Tea shop is open....
Marmora Man replied to ednerd's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
This subject (the "rights" of childless versus "rights" of those with children) is in danger of becoming as boring as th "middle class trendies" taking over good old working class ED and / or "fings ain't wot they used to be. Get real - everyone has a choice. The variety of restuarants, bars, pubs and clubs in ED is such that all tastes are catered for. If you don't like the company go elsewhere - but don't criticise other parts of the community for being part of the community. -
Cycle Route Kennington - ED

Marmora Man Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Don't forget > > London Freewheel > > Mass bike in to a traffic free London from Peckham > Rye Park Sunday 23 September So who was there?? I was - good run into London, crossed Southwark Bridge on "wrong" side of the road as it was cyclists only. Southwark Bridge to Parliament - 10 mins instead of 25 - 35 in normal traffic. All good fun - Boris Johnson rode there - Gary Bushnell (another London Mayoral candidate came by car (Bad move). Lots of children, many regular cyclists but lots of newcomers too. -
I really like this place. It slows me down - could be the start of a slow food campaign in ED. I don't want instant service, I want to be made to slow down, chill out and relax - it's what afternoon tea and cakes (or anytime tea & cakes) should be about. Agree it's slightly odd about the children thing - everyone there has always been so friendly - including other customers that the idea of them "throwing" customers out doesn't fit their image or my experiences. Admittedly my children are now 17 & 15 and therefore more likely to be thrown on grounds of hair style and dress sense than eating habits - tho' come to think of it ....!

For 1. Great views across London from the heights 2. No Starbucks 3. Great Victorian housing stock - that will still be standing in another 100 years. 4. Open spaces - Peckham Rye, Dulwich Park, Goose Green 5. A non Identikit high street - apart from banks very few standard high street names. Against 1. Nero's has moved in

When I moved in we took out NTL cable & broadband - same sort of hassle you have experienced L_B but once over have had very few problems with NTL and then, on its takeover by Virgin, with Virgin. The Virgin V+ box is good news and a great alternative to Sky +. Hang on in there - it should come good. NOTE: When Virgin took over prices fell by order of 20%.

More fireworks tonight (19/9) at 10.30 - on a sight line just to the east (right) of St Pauls. Anyone know what they may have been - son tells me they may have been to celebrate Vodaphone Awards????

Can now be seen gracing Paternoster Square next to St Paul's. Temple Bar

The Tapas place nearly opposite is worth trying if you haven't already. HAs a genuine "Granada" ambience and food.
