    Brexit View

So, the current negotiators look no closer to a deal than at the point we triggered Brexit. And today the Beeb points out why 'no deal' is not really being prepared for either. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41271028 So, is Brexit going to be: a) a disaster b) a complete disaster, or c) a complete and utter disaster.

This is laid down in national law. It > is illegal to use them for revenue generation. And it is the 'profit' bit that is the killer. Because such a wide use for the profit ("transport") allows the council to effectively subsidise costs they would normally have to budget for. That money can then be used for other things, so the council effectively does make money. It can work a bit like this. Let's say a council charges someone ?100 a year for having a front fence, but on the condition that they will use all the money they charge in 'upkeeping fences'. The person agrees, because they know that the fence needs about ?100 of work done on it a year, so that's pretty fair. Then, after a while that council changes that charge to ?150 because they know that they have another fence somewhere else that is currently costing them ?50 a year. Both fences are now covered by the one persons' fence-charge money and they now have a ?50 'profit' in their budget they can spend on whatever they like. The following year the same council realises that their nice flower bed in front of the council offices is costing them ?50 a year, but it is growing right on the edge of the property... so close it could really be considered a fence. So now the charge gets put up another ?50 to ?200 a year and that frees up another ?50 for them to spend on other things. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Profit.

    Hotmail problems

Hotmail is now part of the Outlook service and it has been unreliable for the last couple of days. It has, allegedly, now been fixed. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-41306441
  4. True, TG, it does somewhat fail the 'simple' requirement!
  5. If you have a tile floor, then underfloor heating is really effective.

Asda are great - and really cheap - but not quick. They have everything made in Vietnam if I recall correctly, so the glasses take a couple of weeks to arrive.

The UK's statistics watchdog has kicked off a fight with Boris over the figure. This should be fun.

    TV gone awol

If it is the freeview, you can just buy an external Freeview box and use a HDMI cable to hook it to the TV. You should be able to pick one up for about ?20. If you want recording capability as well, then even though nxjen's has just died, Humax do some fine products.

    TV gone awol

It may be your antenna. Unlike old analogue TV's, digital channels either get a signal or don't - none of the old fuzzy, ghosted picture. And when it can't, it just says 'no signal'. It could be the recent storm has dislodged a wire or maybe something has chewed it somewhere along the way.
  11. Given the current thinking, I suspect any teacher that tries that might just find themselves jobless and on a register.

When you actually think about it. When I thought about it more, I asked myself: The London Bus is as iconic as the Union Jack, the Beefeater, the Crown and as British as the Lion and the Unicorn. But you wouldn't travel in any of these to get to work in the morning, no! And then I considered... you wouldn't put your head in a microwave, so why would you put your food in there? And then I thought you wouldn't out other pets like a cat or dog in a bowl full of water, so why you you put your goldfish in one? And then I realised that it was, indeed, a pretty silly argument.

  17. I can honestly say I love animals. Especially with chips.
  18. I saw whole chickens on sale in a big-name supermarket the other day for ?2.80 each. Normal price, not on sale. That's just not economically sustainable.

  21. Everything Robbin said, with the additional consideration of asking yourself how flexible you need to be. If you may need to consider moving in the next 5 years (i.e. do you have a job that may need you to move?), then any drop in prices may lock you in due to negative equity. If you are looking to stay longer term then this is less likely to affect you.

You mean the bags they shove through your letterbox? They are businesses that, at best, give a tiny amount to the charities to use their name and, at worst may not actually be charities at all. I just had a look at a bag we got today. The charity receives ?75 per tonne of clothing. That may sound a lot, but a nice shirt weighing, say, 400g would only earn a mere 3p for the charity.
