  1. A 'slut', before it changed to infer somewhat loose morals, used to mean an untidy or slovenly women.

  3. Well this was an interesting idea, if not really an interesting read. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/oct/12/left-daily-mail-paul-dacre The Guardian invited Paul Dacre (editor, Daily Mail) to write an article, which he (unimaginatively) titled, "Why is the left obsessed by the Daily Mail?". The rest was fairly predictable... except did he rail against the Guardian? No! He hops into the Beeb with nary a mention of the Gruin. Subtext: The Guardian has far too small a readership for the Mail to worry about. The comments section is the predictable outpouring of bile, but worth five mins and a cup of coffee to laugh at. Though they all completely seemed to have missed the Gruin snub.
  4. Maybe it's a for new magazine - "The Dulwich Pervert".

Mind you, the Guardian has been sniping at the Mail for years (almost obsessively so), so perhaps they finally snapped.
  6. So, what I think you are saying is that the tenant would also be locked into the contract for three years? I can see this going through with most people wanting 12 month break cause options, which would make the whole exercise useless. Most landlords (unless they are renting out their own home temporarily) would love three year tenancies, especially if there are annual rent reviews.
  7. I am thinking a certain episode of the IT Crowd...? :)

    Outlook

No problem (yesterday or today) by me. Are you connecting directly via the www.outlook.com website or using something like a firefox plugin? Sometimes Outlook security gets antsy and you need to answer a couple more questions. Also, try clearing your cache, you might have something corrupt in there.

  11. What would a tenant do if they signed a three-year contract and then wanted to move, say for a new and better job?
  12. That would increase the average speed along there, which seems to be counter-productive to the current debate.
  13. They don't use speed cushions any more for that reason. They now fit sinusoidal speed humps which, if designed and installed properly (!) mean that passing over them at about the right speed is comfortable, but too fast and they give you a fair jolt. The downside of speed humps is that cars tend to spew out far more emissions around them. So, you get less speed, but more air pollution.

Adding all the new signs, etc will cost quite a bit of dosh. 2) If there is a problem with traffic, and this isn't the solution, shouldn't we be looking for the solution? (First step: define the problem.) 20mph limit seems to be the default solution for everything at the moment.

And the average speed is already below 20mph. The number of speeding drivers must already be a rather tiny number.
  17. If cars are (allegedly) travelling that fast, Cora, how would changing the speed limit help?
  18. Hmm - avoided the question nicely there, James.

  21. People having their picture taken during a particularly surprising moment in a 'Haunted House' attraction. Funny what people do in a moment of fear. http://www.theguardian.com/world/gallery/2013/oct/07/faces-of-fear-canadian-haunted-house-in-pictures
  22. Here's a pretty good summary of some independent views on shared space. http://www.theinformationdaily.com/2013/04/09/is-shared-space-the-future-for-city-centre-roads Some experts say it's good, some not so sure. Some of the comments from different people: - "shared space is safer and allows higher average speeds" - "Ashford?s shared space scheme to be unpopular with pedestrians who felt less safe" - "shared space can make people uncomfortable ? in particular cyclists ? but (he) maintains it is safer." - "drivers and cyclists tend to avoid a shared space in Haren, near Groningen ?because it?s unpleasant?" - "Exhibition Road is popular with tourists and restaurateurs but not with drivers who avoid it, meanwhile Queen?s Gate which runs parallel is ?rammed?. It suggests drivers generally avoid areas that attract pedestrians." - "in the Netherlands shared space has been most successful in small villages with very little traffic. " - ?Streets are hugely complex and their design must take that into account.? Dales says shared space has good principles but warns ?No kind of design dogma has ever served our towns and cities well.? So, it sounds popular (if a little weird) for pedestrians, but drivers and cyclists try to avoid the area. That would mean Melbourne Grove and, more likely, Crystal Palace Road will bear the brunt. Or, people will start to avoid ED altogether. All this will please LL shopkeepers (not).
  23. MrBen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Apple make great, solid, reliable kit that will outlast your average windows PC by several years. Not really. Windows PCs in corporate environments used to have a three year replacement cycle - this has now pushed out to five since they do last much longer these days. Microsoft are having a lot of problems getting people off XP ( first released in 2001) because it is so stable. Of course, part of this is the fact that disks are so much more reliable these days, but that affects both PCs and Apples (and, more importantly, servers). And, of course, like the OP, Apple users are much more slaves to fashion that PC users, so longevity isn't generally an feature that sees too much use...
