About five minutes walk, to be precise.
  4. Hugo understood my point. Hand gestures and consensus might work with 60 people. It won't work with 60 million.
  5. This is the issue with the 'solutions' that the Occupy camp use - they are not scalable in any way. Their democracy involves everyone in the same tent reaching a 'consensus' by either folding their arms (for disagree) or making jazz hands for agree (I kid you not). Their solution to school woes is to staff it with unqualified volunteers and keeping things in check by asking them not to 'disrespect the community'. It's a bit like saying you've solved the world's energy problems by showing how you power a small electric light with a hand cranked generator. Cute, but not scalable.

Getting into a slanging match isn't helping. Keep to the facts about problems with the CPZ consultation - there are lots of them, remember. There's no need for personal attacks. We have a strong enough argument.

  8. I think without CRB checks and OFSTED checks it might be a tad illegal as well. Bet no one takes any responsibility if a kid gets hurt or a kiddie-fiddler gets in there.
  9. But they are an unnecessary cost. You have very few cash payments these days, so why support two methods of payment? You need to employ people to empty and maintain these machines, probably for little in the way of return. Seems sensible to remove them.
  10. On the other hand, should we penalise people for being frugal? Seems like a incentive to be feckless. If someone is unwaged, then they should be offered the rate if they can prove it.
  11. Nowhere. They'll just join the swelling ranks of face painters, teepee builders and drum beaters. You can never have too many teepees.

  13. Yep, Hugo. I laughed out loud at that one as well. :))

The Occupy protests remind me a little of the standard Hollywood prostitute scene: Man: What's your name? Woman: What do you want it to be? The people taking part in the Occupy protests has wildly varying reasons for being there, and it seems all of the supporters are happy to read that their particular bugbear is the one that is at the heart of the protest. If I was being kind, I'd say it was a dazzling case of brilliant marketing. For those of us a little more questioning, it still comes down to 'What do they want?' and that, it seems, is the number one question they don't seem to have an answer for. Whatever, the answer sure as hell does not seem to be 'a debate'.

Tut tut, quids. Being such an aficionado of Ms Franklin you should have noticed the song was 'Think', not 'Respect'. Especially when it was written in 20ft high letters at the back of the stage...

Yes, the police dis pepper spray a bunch of peaceful protesters. That in itself is enough for outright public revulsion. So why did this person outright lie and over-egg the incident? Correct me if I am wrong, but nowhere can I find footage of the police forcing "open their mouths & pepper-sprayed down their throats". And there were a lot of videos from the incident. Someone on the Guardian site had a good word for this. They called it 'hyperbollocks". And it undermines the truth, which is bad enough. Why make something up?

Not so much nervous about the process, but the nasty stuff they pump down to do the fracking seems a dead-set way to poison ground water suppliers. If they could clean that up...

They reduced regulations (which admittedly helped cause the mess we're in) and the financial institutions duly shifted their operations over here. In times of global operations it is very simple task to route transactions through alternative countries. And bankers (and the tax they pay) tend to go where the money is. I have no problem with the tax itself, but unless it is imposed unilaterally it will cause major issues for London. Sweden tried to do it on their own once, and "the volume of bond trading fell by 85%, even though the tax rate on five-year bonds was only 0.003%. The volume of futures trading fell by 98% and the options trading market disappeared."
  21. The phrase is "cutting off the nose to spite the face". We have to punish those bad bankers. Even if it does cripple the economy. That'll teach them... as they move offshore. Unless the major financial centre of the world impose it in unison, it will fail. And I can't see China falling into line anytime soon as, if the UK/Europe and the US impose this, Hong Kong will become the place to do business.
  22. The sooner the crack down on the scrap metal merchant taking this stuff no questions asked can't come too soon, either.

Ha ha. Reminds me of all the girls who thought the Extreme song 'More Than Words' was so sweeeet and lovely, when it basically said 'shut up and get your kit off'. And all the American rednecks who thought Springsteen's 'Born in the USA' was a song to get all patriotic about.

I hope they do move on, or get moved on. The campers won't budge. The City of London will take it to court. Expect the whole matter to last weeks.

Actually, I think it's a no-brainer to take the bus - especially as it is apparently very difficult to find a car space near the station! Plus it's free if you have a travelcard. Why on earth would you want to drive? Especially with two bus routes taking you direct.
