You can go down the waiting list as people who live closer to the school move in and push you further back. As Jollymummy's friends were offered their places ahead of my neighbour, logically they would have been above her on the list so must have moved in after January? There's a great map that someone on here produced showing the catchments from last year for most primary schools round here. I would also have thought though that the new school openings/expansions will cause a bit of easing of some of the existing distances.

Yes, the sling library is what you need. They've just moved to Beckenham but easily accessible. Convex, I'd be interested in your hop tye depending on colour!

Trying to buy a house in this area is near impossible
simonethebeaver replied to Grotty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Have the people talking about cheap Sydenham, Honor Oak etc looked at prices recently? The cheapest 3 bedroom Victorian house (as these are often the houses people want to buy) on the market in Sydenham is ?449,000, and it's the very edge of Sydenham that is Catford. The next one up is ?625,000. Things are going for over asking there as well as here. In SE23 the cheapest on the market is ?490,000 for a repossession that already has an offer of over ?550,000. Yes, these are cheaper prices than ED, although they are outliers to more expensive houses and will probably go for more than asking, but they are way, way higher than a year ago, and still a lot of money to anyone on anything like the average UK salary. A standard 3 bed in the roads off Honor Oak parade is ?625,000, and those are not big houses. -

Cheaper but still a huge amount for people on average salary. -

The pace of change is exactly it. Yes, you know you can't afford Dulwich Village, or East Dulwich, but you can always move to Sydenham. But very suddenly all ?450 buys you in Sydenham is a flat or tiny house and you just didn't see it coming. -

Our house has just been valued at a shade under 100% more than what we paid for it 18 months ago. -
Move a few miles away and every secondary school is now Harris. Children in Norwood/Beckenham can now only attend their schools unless they can get into the Langley Schools. Two local schools were taken over by Harris with significant opposition. That's what worries many people. We want to preserve choice.

2nd baby due, no family locally
simonethebeaver replied to esme's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We have no family at all around, and have coped through quite a few childcare emergencies, including births, with the support of very lovely local friends. When I had second baby at home, we called our friends on standby and they came and collected the others, and brought them back next morning to meet the new baby. Shout out to them, as they are Family Room users! Obviously we do what we can in return for any friends in need. You'll be fine. -
When was East Dulwich at it's best for you?
simonethebeaver replied to Otta's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
About a decade ago, when interesting things were popping up all over the place but there were still parts that were old East Dulwich left. Now it feels like lots of the businesses around here are targeted at the more money than sense brigade. -

The Positive Birth Movement
simonethebeaver replied to sillywoman's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We actually DID cover the C Section/forceps issue in our antenatal classes. Although that meant I found out that my plan to ask for a C section in the event of a stalled induction to avoid an instrumental birth was a bit flawed, as that might not be possible. Useful to know of potential issues in advance. In the event of a third, doing that in a suitably bolshy way remains my plan though. -
A note of caution - school runs may be misleading as catchments have shrunk so much. We are in a similar situation and my advice would be not to worry too much right now. Assuming you don't plan to move, there's nothing you can do in advance. By 2016 the new Harris primary is likely to be up and running which is likely to change things a bit. Keep an eye on what happens for 2015 entry as that is most likely to be helpful to you.

Suspicious blokes underhill road

No. A solo young man collecting for a bogus sounding charity with no ID who was calling at random houses after dark. -

We called 101 recently about a rather suspicious 'charity collector' and they said it was always helpful to have information. -
How big is the small brown bin? When I read your first post I thought you meant you only half filled one of those caddies every week and we manage to fill one completely every couple of days!

SPD treatment recommendations
simonethebeaver replied to hoppermum's topic in The Family Room Discussion
He is really unusual in being such a specialist I know. I saw him postnatally and went 3 or 4 times, about 2/3 weeks apart. Obviously it would be better if he was closer but the journey wasn't too bad. -
stroller ideas for "big" toddler
simonethebeaver replied to midivydale's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Just adding another Maclaren voice. I had to liberate my daughter from the Bee before she was one as she hated it so much. She loves the Maclaren Techno XT we've got. She's another enormous toddler and fits well into it now she's 2 2/3. -

I've recommended him before on here, and oddly enough someone has just PMed me to say how much he's helped her! You need Quentin Shaw, in Tunbridge Wells. Honestly, he's a star. Read about him here: http://www.theguardian.com/education/2002/may/30/medicalscience.healthandwellbeing Absolutely worth the journey, and takes health insurance. -
The problem with giving a temporary address is that you will not be getting offered a place directly (as you've already realised) but be added to a waiting list, certainly for your YR child. The waiting list operates on admissions criteria so your distance from the school is crucial. If you rent a permanent home right next to a school, you're likely to be top of the waiting list and have a good chance of a place when someone leaves. Further away, you'll be further down the waiting list. The cruel truth is you're looking for school places in a severe over-subscribed area where children are being sent across the borough to less 'desirable' schools because of the lack of places. Finding a place for your younger child in this environment at this point in the school year is a major challenge, as there will be still be people on the waiting lists who are very keen to get their child into a 'better'/closer school than they have been allocated.
