The Spin Doctor (Appliance Repair) Recommendation
simonethebeaver replied to Mrs Tinks's topic in Reviews
I had Steve round today for the second time (first our dryer, then our washing machine). Both times he has come as soon as he could, fixed our problem, and charged a very reasonable sum for doing so. He's also friendly, polite and gets the work done quickly. Thoroughly recommended. -
The doses were 10ml but the lovely nurses here have got us a double concentrate from the pharmacy so now only 5ml. We may be able to bribe her into 5ml, but otherwise will try your advice. Thanks!

Last night's guy swabbed but obviously that result isn't known; he suspected staph. Today's guy just looked and said she wasn't infected and he's come from a country where you see much worse things. Some of the lesions have started to heal over and she's not running a temperature. So that's that. She has blood running out of some of them and we can't get the oral antibiotics into her but it doesn't seem I can do much more.
-
Today's doctor says not infected at all. I give up.
-
Thanks. We opted not to stay in last night but to try antibiotics at home. Two attempts to get the full (enormous) dose in have failed and new sores are still appearing so I'm asking them to admit her for IV now. The sores are bleeding and enormous.

We're actually waiting in A&E now after being sent here by Seldoc. Our GP over the phone said no need for antibiotics unless they all starting joining up but the Seldoc doctors had never seen such bad sores.
-
Thank you, both. She's two and ten months, and the size of a four year old, so maybe the Eurax would be a goer. Although I think we may have the same problem as the Virasoothe in getting it on her. We have Peppa plasters which may enable us to get them on her although they won't be tiny. The really bad spots are around the size of a 10p piece.
-
Just reviving this thread. I have an extremely miserable two year old with chicken pox. She isn't too itchy but just in a lot of pain from her spots. She rarely lets us near her with the Virasoothe, screams in pain in the bath, can barely be touched, and is feverish without Calpol, which she will only take occasionally. She is waking in the night because moving lying down causes her so much discomfort. Poor mite. The GP says this is standard, and we're on day three. Will this get better very soon? And can we put plasters over the worst of her spots, as any contact is agony? I'm guessing the answer is no, as that would stop them scabbing?

Plan Bs are definitely not off the table given that we do not yet have a firm provider. Also, and I say this entirely minus pique I promise!, if we choose a provider that people do NOT want (and I really, really don't think most people will feel that way) then there is nothing at all to stop supporters removing their support and approaching other providers. None of the steering group members have any hidden agendas or connections.
-
Hi Kristy. I think James is feeling a bit under fire from some of the posts and unfortunately got a bit heated all round. Of course you want to know how the decision was made, and why the provider in question approached in the first place. We started on the basis of what seemed to be agreed that we wanted, as said often on here, a co-ed, non faith, non-selective secondary school. We then thought of a wide range of potential providers, and it was a very lengthy discussion with a lot of ideas that were fed in from conversations that steering group members had had with people. Eventually we settled on some that we felt would be more than acceptable to local parents owing to track record and their ability to set up a school within the timescale we were looking at. Those names are confidential at the moment as negotiations are sensitive but we are confident that if and when we can go ahead and announce it, parents will be pleased. We will also be happy to explain exactly why we chose that provider but basically it will be because it fits the needs of the supporters so far as anything can. If we are in any doubt about which is the right provider then we will seek further input. We're making sure that the names of steering group members are known at their schools so any parents will be able to discuss their concerns directly with someone in person or by phone or email. We are at the end of the day not elected or part of any accountable structure but we are all parents working towards the same aim. There is no conspiracy at work, simply the need to observe internal governance processes in the relevant organisations. Also ultimately it will always be the case that some people may not be happy. Those parents would have the choice not to use the school. If we as a group of local parents were not doing this, it may well be a group of people with a niche view, or strong religious links, or unusual educational ideas putting forward a bid and sadly the legislation means that Southwark would be obliged to consider that bid. At least we are hoping to appeal to the great majority of parents.

The Positive Birth Movement
simonethebeaver replied to sillywoman's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Interestingly the group sort of fulfilled a different purpose this month; one of the possible outcomes that was discussed at the start of this thread. There were only a small number of us, and one attendee ended up talking about her difficult birth experience. It was very moving, and she was able to talk in an understanding and supportive environment. It helped her a great deal and she is now thinking about what else she can do (eg debrief at the hospital). So I think this month, while we didn't really address the topic (hold over to next time?) was truly Positive! -
It was that much! It looks lovely. Wish we could go. (That price was for the cottage that sleeps six, as we have three kids.) It looks much nicer than Centre Parcs.
-
It's expensive! The price shows up when you check availability. Three nights in June is around ?1200.

A good pizza (like Franco Manca) has nothing but flour in it. So not the best thing ever in the great scheme of things, but not exactly a diet disaster. I'm not sure why this thread is discussing revolting cheeseburger crust pizzas when they are not remotely what will be on offer.
-
Like any food, fine in appropriate quantities. And children need more carbohydrates than adults anyway. I say this as someone who eats very few simple carbs and can't remember the last time I ate a pizza.
-
Did ?1800 include labour? I've just had a new Worcester boiler fitted for ?1500 including labour.

Transparency is really important to the steering group and ways to engage with the whole community are already on the agenda of our next meeting in the next few days. Obviously, within the decision making process, it will be impossible to please everyone. Including probably all members of the steering group! The aim will be to ensure that the school meets the needs of community. Ultimately of course, parents have the choice not to use the school if it doesn't offer what they want, but we hope that won't be the case. I would hope for example that edanna would feel happy with it. The application to open a school will be taken forward by whichever provider is chosen, with advice from the steering group on parents' interests and local concerns.

No prebook appointments at DMC until end of March
simonethebeaver replied to midivydale's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Forest Hill Road Practice also has a popular midwifery practice attached, and while FHR also has its issues, like many busy London practices, it's nothing like the descriptions of DMC. Also, if the midwives work, as I believe they do, in a similar way, they take on about 210 deliveries a year maximum - a drop in the ocean of the thousands that will be registered to the practice. -
It would be great if this thread could be used to discuss what local people would like to see in a school, rather than an ideological argument. Almost 350 local families have now expressed support for the idea. I know that the current legislation doesn't please everyone. I'm not entirely convinced by the free school policy myself. But pragmatism has to rule if we're to get the school we need. Hopefully we'll end up with a school provided by a name that many people are happy with. Please, let's talk about the things that are important to you in a school. On your wishlists, what does the new ED secondary provide? What issues are important to you? And maybe we can leave the argument about the principle at the door for now, because it really is derailing the thread.

Please can someone open a B&B :)
simonethebeaver replied to esme's topic in The Family Room Discussion
That someone will need far more than a million pounds now if they are buying a house for it! We've often thought it would be a fabulously good business round here as there's such demand, but the capital investment is way beyond most people. -
You also pay ?34 if you work in the public sector.
