Mugged on Forest Hill Road on the 25th July at 5pm
simonethebeaver replied to bjm's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
cmck, not sure that snatching and mugging is much of a distinction, as the experience is pretty horrid. It's a violation. Having said that, my phone was taken from my hand but I was pushed to put me off balance first. The police view that as violence when it comes to prosecution. I imagine the poster whose hair was pulled would also fall into that category. But nothing was said and no weapons shown. -
Shake Shack ruined me for all other burgers. Also they are very cheap. But in New York, the buggers.

Mugged on Forest Hill Road on the 25th July at 5pm

None of us was particularly close to a train station. I was outside a day nursery. Sympathies to all those others who had the same horrible experience. (I am a laydee by the way, and was pushing my pram at the time, so couldn't have gone after them.) The only consolation is that the more people this happens to, the more likely they are to be caught. There is CCTV of them running away with my phone, for example, and lots of witnesses. -

The police were very kind tO me, and of the 'why should you be unable to use your phone?' mindset. I was devastated as I lost all the photos of my 10 week old baby, which are irreplaceable. My computer has been broken for weeks so they weren't backed up. As the mugger ran away down the road, I just shouted 'he's got my baby's pictures, stop him' over and over. I must have sounded like he'd nicked a photo album. As it happens I was careful about having my phone out in the park or anywhere like the Elephant, but midday at the end of my road, texting a friend to say I was running late, I just didn't think it would happen there. -

Well, as I said upthread, it happened to me on the same road last week, so not entirely an isolated incident. -

As I've said on another thread, the same thing happened to me last week further down Forest Hill Road. Although the guy that stole mine was black, he was with a white guy. Guy was blond? I hope you have reported this to the police. They've been great with me, and I know there's some CCTV footage of the guys that did me. If this is the same people, and the same thing happening on the same road suggests that's possible, they need to start building up a picture of them. They got me in to try to identify my mugger and are taking the whole thing very seriously. I do hope you're OK too. I was really shaken afterwards. It's a horrible thing to happen. -
Pregnancy Pilates / Yoga?
simonethebeaver replied to Mikandnik's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Can you take babies to the post-natal pilates, do you know? I had SPD and want to get going on the pilates but need to be able to take my daughter along! -
My mobile was grabbed out of my hand yesterday on Forest Hill Road. The two guys ran off into Camberwell Old Cemetery before the police arrived. The police were fantastic. It happened at midday, on a fairly busy road. People were very sympathetic but understandably reluctant to tackle two young men. I was very shaken as I was with my small baby, and very upset as the phone had all my photos of her that hadn't been backed up - my own fault I know. Please be careful. I'd been making sure I didn't have my phone out when walking around the Rye after recent reports of muggings there, but never thought it would happen on the street.

Mavis, I was with Oakwood and they were amazing. However most of the women I know locally who have given birth recently have not been with community midwife teams and did not meet their midwives beforehand, including all the other women in my NCT class, with the lovely Sillywoman (who was very good at talking about all sorts of birth!). Moreover, I had only met one of the midwives who delivered my baby before. In fact, as I had a four day latent stage, of rather full on intensity, I saw every midwife in the practice other than my named one, who was on leave! At one point in that time, I would have been delivered by one I didn't know and one from another practice covering leave. I still felt confident that they would have the same approach. There were loads of reasons I loved being with my midwives. We did build relationships to some extent, and I liked them all a lot, but your actual contact time with them through the pregnancy is limited. The home visits were lovely too, and I was lucky enough to have s home birth with them. But my favourite thing was that I was confident that they were best practice professionals, who knew the most recent research, helped me to make my own decisions, and who I knew would stand up for me if necessary. They treated me as an intelligent adult throughout. I'd hope you could find these things with the King's midwives too.

I had severe PGP in pregnancy, and in fact still have some lingering pain 6 weeks after the birth. I also saw Daniel Harvey the chiropractor on Crystal Palace Road, who did a great deal to alleviate the worst of it, and who has just (I hope) knocked it on the head now. I went to King's for physio, and asked for an urgent referral, but didn't find them very helpful. They only did a cursory exam and were very much 'there's's nothing we can do' although the crutches helped. The exercises they gave me weren't very useful. Also the clinic at Dulwich Hospital, while staffed with lovely people, is upstairs with only a goods lift, so I had to ask to be taken up in a wheelchair. I switched to King's after that, as there's a lift! Good luck, it is horrible. Rest as much as possible. Mine did ease before the birth thankfully. And I definitely found a pillow between my legs helped.

Breastfeeding help in ED
simonethebeaver replied to on_the_hill's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks for this thread-just what I needed. I have a 5 week old who has been diagnosed with tongue tie by the HV. She referred us to King's on Friday-any idea how long we'll wait to be snipped? Once we're done, I want to make sure her latch is right so I know we're on the right track from now on. -
independent midwives - who aren't homeopaths!
simonethebeaver replied to Kes's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yes, I've read stuff on here before about the HVs there - the reason I've started another thread on here to be honest! Sadly blood tests are at Dulwich, Kes. Although I've never asked if there's an alternative. -
Thanks, all. The weight thing is one thing that worries me slightly. I can't count the number of friends I have who have been unnecessarily worried about their babies' weight at the clinics - one was even sent to A&E. I have no reason at all to think I'll have a small baby - MrBeaver and I are both pretty solid - but I don't really fancy torturing myself over the odd oz here and there for no good reason! I've heard that they tend to concentrate resources where they think they're most needed so would be unlikely to chase someone who appears to be managing well. I have a history of depression so PND is already flagged up all over my notes and I'd feel comfortable talking to my GP about it I think, rather than someone I didn't know well. I will see what happens. I love my midwives so much that I'm already feeling a bit sad about the day when they sign me over to these health visitor people.

Are Foxtons actually selling houses in ED?
simonethebeaver replied to MrsP's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm someone looking to buy a house sometime this year and I've been lurking on Rightmove etc. for a year or so to see what's out there and what it costs. I don't notice which agent it's on with except if it's with Foxtons, and then I assume it's overpriced. The name definitely puts me off, as a buyer. Obviously if the house was perfect, I'd have a look, but there's no way I'd make an asking price offer given their reputation. -
I'm interested to hear your experiences with local health visitors. I'm expecting my first baby and have heard lots of not particularly positive stories about health visitors, not only in East Dulwich but in general. I have lots of friends with children and many of them, after having irritating encounters with HVs for their first children, have more or less opted out of the system for subsequent children. They've had problems with bad, sometimes verging on dangerous, advice on feeding, weight, vaccinations etc. What are the good things about HVs as opposed to a good GP? And how much involvement am I expected to have with them? I'm good at taking advice and will take it from trusted sources, but some of this lot sound a bit pointless.

HBAC: What are the chances?
simonethebeaver replied to Ruth_Baldock's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I've been told by my midwives - am yet to experience this! - that there are monitors that can even be worn in water at Kings. I'd love to know if anyone's used those. But if that's the case, then mobile monitoring seems entirely possible. Good luck, Ruth. -
Sleep; you will lie-in again!
simonethebeaver replied to sillywoman's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Also, they do get to the point when you can leave a pile of cereal boxes and bowls out, and tell them to keep quiet and watch the TV! That way, the time they get up is immaterial to you. -
independent midwives - who aren't homeopaths!
simonethebeaver replied to Kes's topic in The Family Room Discussion
There are some great GPs there and others that have been a bit less inspiring, but I've been surprised to read some people on here saying it's awful. The appointments can generally be got at short notice, as crystal says, and the odd locum has been poor, but otherwise no real complaints - certainly better than the practice I moved from. The midwives make it worthwhile anyway, to be honest. Good luck! -

simonethebeaver replied to Kes's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If you're in Nunhead, you may be in the catchment for the Forest Hill Road Group Practice and the Oakwood midwives. They are community midwives belonging to Kings, based at the surgery, and have been described by the Guardian as the 'gold standatd' of midwifery! They support home birth but will also come to King's with you for births, including C sections. I am with them and have received superb care. The other pregnant women I know have been amazed by the way I've been looked after, eg all appointments at home, getting to know the team, long appointments to discuss birth plan. Most importantly they offer continuity of care. -
King's midwives vs Lanes??
simonethebeaver replied to mirabelle's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'm with Oakwood, which is the same system as The Lanes, unless I've got it completely wrong, and from the reactions of others to hearing about the service I'm getting (service seems almost a rude word but I can't think of a better!), Oakwood are far and away better than the Kings' midwives. Oakwood: - have done all my appointments at home, and pretty much to time - have given me a named midwife, and introduced me to the two others in the group - I'm having a home birth (fingers crossed) so two of them will be there with me and I'll already know them - have spent as much time with me as I've needed at each appointment - will come to hospital with me if needed, so I'll have continuity of care throughout labour and delivery, which can make you far less fearful and relaxed - are completely supportive and understanding of hypnobirthing, which we're planning to do - are planning a two hour visit with me and my partner at 36 weeks to go through the birth plan thoroughly with us, and will help us put it together - say they'll visit every day for the first 12 days after the baby is born, including coming to the hospital if I'm in there. I can't say exactly how this compares to Kings' as I've never been with them, but quite a few people I know are with Kings and don't seem to have had this sort of stuff. However, if you're happy with your midwife, then she may be the best person to stick with. Lots of people do have their babies happily with Kings. I'm sure you'll be fine whatever happens.
