As with other kinds of shops which we don't have locally. Department stores, for example. I don't see why it's an "extraordinary comment". I've been here for very nearly thirty years now, and East Dulwich has changed, much as some people may wish it hadn't. Iceland was replaced by M&S, for example. I don't think a pound shop would be a good fit any more, and I can't imagine Poundland (the only decent pound shop, in my opinion) would want to be here anyway. In any case, whilst there are bargains to be had in pound shops, much of what they sell can be got cheaper elsewhere. Just because something is in a pound shop doesn't make it worth spending a pound on it.
  2. Actually come to think of it, I have a vague memory of seeing a turtle there, out of the water. ETA: But I don't think there is any way it (or possibly they) could have got there unless at some point somebody actually put them there. Unless they had made a bid for freedom from somebody's house or garden :)
  3. I also have a pigeon who comes to the garden and goes through contortions to eat from the bird feeders. He has cracked the suet balls, hasn't managed the seeds yet :)

Now I'm wondering why I didn't get a similar letter, as I responded to the consultation. Was it posted, or emailed? If posted, that probably explains it :(
  5. The front of the pub is taped off at the moment. I assume this is because one of the upstairs windows looks about to fall out.

There is at least one Poundland within walking distance. Wouldn't mind a Wilko though, as so far as I know the nearest one is in Penge (there are several pound shops there, as well. The down side is you have to live in Penge. Apologies for any offence caused to Penge living readers of the forum :) )

  8. Could you attach a note on his collar to this effect? Absolutely disgraceful that somebody is doing this to someone else's cat. Unless they believe he is a stray which they have adopted, and don't realise he already has a home?
  9. This has been happening for years in this area on and off, possibly for decades. No, they are not from a legitimate organisation or charity.

Unfortunately, somebody may have tired of it as a pet (possibly when it grew larger) and dumped it there :(
  11. Now blissfully quiet at quarter past three, just a lovely blackbird singing. Sorry for the previous grump :) Hope you are all enjoying the beautiful day, wherever you are :)
  12. It was so peaceful earlier. Beautiful day, no planes, no traffic noise, no kids kicking off. Until somebody in the Crystal Palace Road/North Cross Road area decided to start drilling and hammering outside. Whoever you are, I genuinely hope the outcome of your DIY was worth disturbing everybody else's peace. Signed, Grumpy Old Woman who has had to close her back door and windows and can't sit in the garden because of the noise.
  13. You are always supposed to do a patch test before using any hair dye. It always says so on the packet/in the instructions. If you don't do that, you dye your hair at your own risk, I guess.

  15. What colour are the neighbouring houses?

What is your (credible) evidence for the part in bold above, exactly? If you haven't got any, then please don't post such (insert bad word of your choice, such as crap) on here.

On the other hand, nature seems to arrange things so that enough are born that some will hopefully be left. If all the tadpoles which hatched became mature frogs, we would be knee deep in frogs!
  22. nxjen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Spotted a clutch of 7 newly hatched coot chicks on > the lake at Peckham Rye Park this morning If it's the same coot family, I could only see two with their parents yesterday :( Hope the heron hasn't had the rest (haven't seen any herons lately).

I think if I had seen anybody feeding ducks bread next to it I might have had a polite word with them :)
