There is currently no clear scientific evidence that glyphosate is harmful when used in the sort of amounts and concentrations that are used in horticulture/agriculture. So far as I am aware, that is why it is not banned.

They are a nightmare, and easily confused with foxglove seedlings when small (until you try to get them out). Agree, pick off the flowers so they can't seed (shame, as the flowers are very pretty). If you are really desperate Roundup (contains glyphosate, a systemic weedkiller which carries the glyphosate through the plant and kills them from the roots up) would probably work. It takes a while to see results as the leaves die last. But you have to do it on a day with no wind (or forecast rain) and shield other plants very carefully for obvious reasons, so it may not be practicable. Also you may not want to use chemicals. Now - bluebells ......

I don't recall ever having discussed this with you, Dulwich Fox, so I have no idea how you could possibly know whether it was "popular" with us or not. ETA: There are a lot of factors to take into account in siting the stage, as I imagine there are in planning the layout of the whole fair. Clearly health and safety are of major importance,which is why the council inspects the site and stage before the fair opens to the public. Obviously we and the fair organisers will be looking at how things went this year and whether there are things which need to be changed or fine tuned (pun not intentional :) ) for next year. On a wider issue, we are delighted that the fair was so well attended. My personal view is that moving it to a larger place would risk completely ruining the cosy community feel, plus its present location is very convenient and easy for people to get to. And the festival has another fair coming up in Dulwich Park, so it's hard to see where else the Dulwich Festival Fair could be held and still be in Dulwich

There are several excellent local bands who will gladly play for a few beers at community events like this one.

Thanks, yes, I've had two in the past and both these new ones were being built next to the remains of one of the old ones. Though I can't understand why there were two new ones, both very small, in the early stages, and very near each other. There is a small gap in the loft I can see daylight through which must be where the queen is getting in. I have been meaning to do something about it for ages but it's hard to get at.

OK knocked them both off the rafter with a long stick. There is what looks like the very small beginning of what could be a third one, which I couldn't reach. Will keep an eye on it :(

Having seen a very large wasp come and go, I investigated my loft and found the beginning stages of two new wasp nests. I imagine they don't have much in them at the moment except the queen, and I'm not sure whether foaming wasp killer works on the early stages of wasp development. Does anyone know? Could I just knock the nests off with a broom or something? Would they just be rebuilt? Or is the queen likely to be staying inside (haven't seen her for a few days) and if I use the foam I will kill her and then the rest will die if she isn't there? I feel a bit mean, but I don't want a load of wasps in my loft.

Ilona, for wasps nests it works from three metres away, maybe for ants nests too. But I'm going to start a thread on wasps as I need advice.
