Jules-and-Boo Wrote: - > > If it doesn't benefit them to steal it, then it > would reduce the thefts The trouble is, there's no way of knowing before they steal it whether or not they can use it .... So unless everybody locked their phone to be unusable to a thief, they will just go on taking the chance, I guess .... ETA: Oh, and years ago, when I was younger and fitter, I did a self-defence course. I tried out what I'd been taught on my then partner. He had me overpowered in about a zillionth of a second :(
  2. KidKruger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > How can the height of someone's hedge be of any > relevance to a passer-by ? KK it isn't the height, it's the way some hedges take up virtually the whole width of the pavement. If you are pushing a buggy, for example, you have to step into the road to get by. It is at best annoying and inconvenient, and at worst dangerous.

Are you sure it was not someone going through the bins but wearing a yellow jacket (or whatever) in an attempt to look less suspicious?
  5. I believe it was restored by the original artist, with the help of local schoolchildren. I stand to be corrected. There was discussion on the forum at the time, so I'm sure somebody else will remember or be able to find the thread. If that's the case, I'm not sure it would do a great deal for the self-esteem of the kids to paint over their efforts.
  6. Moto G4 or G4 plus. I've got the plus and I'm really happy with it. I bought it direct from Motorola (now part of Lenovo) - there are several options re storage, RAM etc plus you can customise it for colour etc if you want. I have a separate rolling monthly contract for the calls, texts and data. https://www.motorola.co.uk/products/moto-g-plus http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/motorola-moto-g4-plus-1321486/review http://www.trustedreviews.com/moto-g4-plus-review It's far and away the best mobile I've ever had (but then I've never had an iPhone). The Plus has a better camera and fingerprint recognition but if you're not bothered about those then the straight G4 is also excellent value for money.
  7. I almost want to check it out to see if it can possibly be this bad. On the other hand .... A warm juice and a ?2.50 doughnut served without a friendly smile ..... Maybe I won't ....
  8. Wagas? As in Wagamama? Hope not. I think it went way downhill years ago. Unless it has miraculously dragged itself up again?
  9. How do you make out that Franco Manca is marketed at "people of a certain income bracket", Louisa? It's one of the cheapest places to eat round here, and certainly very good value for money given the quality of the food. We don't all want to eat ultra healthy vegan stews and salads every time we eat out. I don't see what is so extremely unhealthy about a sourdough pizza. And Franco Manca sell very delicious salads to accompany their pizzas, anyway. ETA: And for what it's worth, on the basis of my limited experience of Subway I think their food is pretty crap and not good value for money.
  10. I don't know the shop. What is it exactly that they are? Presumably not just a greengrocer, so what is their USP?
  11. Robert Poste's Child Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- The bottom line is usually anywhere > except DMC! I phoned DMC for an appointment last week and got a cancellation the same day, in fact in less than an hour's time. That's not bad. However I still intend moving (haven't got round to it yet) as their turnover of GPs seems to be really high. I have no complaints at all about the medical treatment I have had there, I would just like some continuity of care.
  12. First post ..... Are you connected with this clinic in some way? You seem very familiar with all the treatments it is offering .....
  13. dimples Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > so must have been caused by either fungi or even > could have been something digested before coming > into the park ?! Big coincidence though if two dogs in a relatively short space of time were taken ill with similar symptoms shortly after being in the park, both having eaten something before they went into the park? Possible, obviously.

Fantastic cakes, huge portions, and friendly service. The savoury stuff on the menu looked yummy too, will try that next time!
  15. Well if it is changing, I really hope it will be improved. Admittedly this opinion is based on only eating there once in about a decade, but the meal was mediocre to say the least. Which was a shame, because I like the decor.

  17. Change your doctor?
  18. I wouldn't have worked at all if I didn't have to, and I'd love to have been able to retire at 50. I took voluntary redundancy in my early forties and had a few years off including travelling, which I am very grateful for, but I was well jealous of my older colleagues who were eligible for early retirement and did extremely well out of it. Unless you are lucky enough to have a job you really really love, why wouldn't you want to leave it and have time and money to pursue things that interest you?
  19. Jeremy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > It's borderline junk food, but am not averse to > the occasional Subway as a bit of a guilty > pleasure. I'd leave out the "borderline" :) And damn, I too thought we were getting a subway under the road! Maybe at that nasty junction opposite The Bishop,!
  20. nxjen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > There is a > huge untapped electorate not included in the > Fabian Society's projections which could just > possibly be galvanised by Corbyn. Yes. I am taking a real interest in politics for the first time in my life because of Corbyn, and so are many other people I have spoken to (just to be clear, I have always voted, just not with much enthusiasm). Just because people have not voted in the past does not mean that they will not do so in the future if they see the possibility of a real change in their lives as a result. ETA: Although I agree that there are issues around where these people may be concentrated, and that PR may well in practice be the only hope - which under a Tory government is never going to happen.

Those who want to influence the future > direction of Labour need to be on the inside. "Generally to the left of the Conservatives" is still pretty far right these days. That's why so many people have voted for Corbyn, who is clearly not. Many people who are supposed to be Labour politicians come across as not much different from Tory politicians. There seems to me to be a crying need for a separate centre left party. The Lib Dems I guess would have been it had they not messed up so badly and lost voters in droves by teaming up with the Tories.

There's no reason it needs to be the > mother who leaves work at 5pm to look after the > kids. There isn't in theory any reason why it should be the mother who leaves work early, no. But in practice in many cases it is the mother. One would need to look at the actual situation in a particular case to say whether or not it was indirect discrimination.
  23. So sorry to hear about the dog, and glad the first one has recovered. It is the season for fungi at the moment, isn't it? This may be a stupid question, but has anybody actually looked at the tree to see if there are signs of rat poison or fungi around it in a place which could be accessible to dogs? Also, given that at least two dogs have sadly been poisoned in the same general area, it would seem sensible for lab tests to be carried out to clearly identify the poison, or other cause as suggested by Saffron, if possible. That would be a first step towards eliminating the cause and preventing any more dogs (and owners) suffering in this way. It could also flag up whether there is a possibility that poison was deliberately placed, and if so what action the police might take.
  24. What did the plumber say was the cause of the sink blocking four times?
  25. Walking over Goose Green this afternoon and seeing the children playing in the two huge heaps of fallen leaves, one at each end of the green. And the other morning seeing out of the kitchen window at least eight sparrows all having a bath together in a bowl of water on a table in my garden.
