Edited for typo

  3. the-e-dealer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Maybe TFL are lying ! xxxxxx Well if you look at some of their directions on their journey planner site, they are a bit odd if you know the journey concerned yourself. However the park is quite large and I guess they may be directing you to the other end of it ie not the end that my partner lives. But I don't know which end the fireworks would be. Can't imagine why anyone in East Dulwich would go to South Bermondsey anyway, rather than Brockwell Park or Crystal Palace, both of which are nearer, unless they have a particular wish to boycott events run by Lambeth or whatever council oversees Crystal Palace (Bromley? Croydon?) :))
  4. the-e-dealer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Thanks sue - I just checked on Journey Planner and > South Bermondsey station is 25 minute walk! > (actually just rechecked! 16 mins of the 25 is a > bus ride) xxxxxx My partner lives opposite the park, and no way is it a 25 minute walk from South Bermondsey station, more like 10 or even less. Depends on which side of the park we're talking about, I suppose.
  5. Huggers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Had a woman caller re loft insulation. She said > she was from the government. xxxxxxxx Yeh, I think at least one of the four lots of callers I had said that. It's a common ploy, because it makes them seem official and respectable. ETA: And it's a sort of half-truth, because the actual grant itself does come from the government. But, the grant money goes to the private company who she works for, not directly to the householder.

It's their pushy selling methods that people are objecting to.
  8. The Woodhouse is too, but no idea if its food/service/atmosphere meet your criteria. They should do - the Christmas Day menu is extortionate :)) ETA: But you can have a lovely walk through the woods on the way or the way back ..... ETA: It's on Sydenham Hill, but the wood route is by far the nicest .....

  13. List of South London firework displays here Info on Brockwell Park at the top, scroll down for all the other displays.
  14. That's interesting, because I know someone who works in a shop on Lordship Lane, and she says that the customers come in and completely ignore her, hardly ever a "hello" or a smile, which she finds very dispiriting. ETA: I personally don't like over-friendly shop assistants, particularly in clothes shops, because it feels like I am being pushed into buying things. I'd rather they ignored me unless I approached them for help. Each to their own, eh?
  15. KalamityKel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why would they expect you to allow them access to > your loft space in this manner? > Surely the whole "make an appointment at an > appropriate time" should be more fitting? xxxxxx I wonder whether the grants are available only for a limited time, which is coming to an end? Could this be why they are being so persistent, because the Goose That Lays The Golden Eggs is about to stop laying them? Obviously these companies are making a lot of money out of the government. Bit like all those pushy computer training firms that sprung up when there was government money available for them to run courses.
  16. computedshorty Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I could be wrong but I think that the concreting > over of Front gardens has been outlawed there must > be a way for rain fall to be absorbed into the > ground. You could point this out to your Landlord. xxxxx Good explanation of the issues here ETA: Mabel, I'm absolutely horrified by this. I used to work for Islington Council, and they were actively encouraging people not to pave their gardens. SUDS (see the link above) was taken very very seriously in the borough. If it turns out that the council has acted illegally, and it seems that at the moment nobody actually knows the reasoning behind what they have done, I think you should not just be compensated, but have at least the parts of the garden belonging to your landlady reinstated to how they were before. It's quite possible that the work was incorrectly done. My brother had a whole front wall demolished by council workmen who had gone to the wrong house. His house is not even a council property! The council obviously had to have his wall rebuilt, and pay for it. And yes, James Barber is very helpful but he may not be your councillor. But I'm sure he could point you in the direction of who to take this up with (grammar). He has a thread on this forum with his contact details. Masterblaster Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Extra loft insulation good. > > Persistent knobbers not understanding "we are a > house built in the last year, and have all of the > insulation required by the current codes" bad. xxxxxxx Yeh, or persistently not understanding "the first time representatives of your firm called here, just the other day, I clearly told you that I had already had a grant and had already had loft installation installed" and therefore calling THREE MORE TIMES !!!! (6) God I'm becoming a Grumpy Old Woman :))
  18. the-e-dealer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- So please > don't bury your heads in the sand and hope your > local environment will always be nice - it takes > work. xxxxxxx Yeh, especially now it's full of bright blue wheely bins (6) :))
  19. There are also usually a couple of stalls there on a Friday - food stalls.
  20. Fired. 2/7 :)) Didn't have to register.

If it's private or housing association then > there is very little accountability. Good luck. xxxxxxx If it's housing association, then the tenants should have a clause in their contract which includes not behaving in an antisocial manner, or words to that effect. If you can find out which housing association it is, then you should definitely pursue it through them, and if you have no luck then go to the Chief Executive. My neighbours and I had problems a while back with tenants of a housing association flat who were giving us grief. It did take persistence and not taking no for an answer while the issue was passed back and forth to different people in the housing association, but in the end writing to the Chief Executive had the desired effect.

There's a thread about it on here somewhere.

Councils are having to really tighten their belts, so the only real reason I can think of to spend zillions of pounds on firework displays is to take people's minds off the public services they are no longer getting for their council tax :-S Anyway, both Crystal Palace and Brockwell Park have had excellent displays in the past, although I think Crystal Palace charges a small entry fee, so we're not exactly short of local-ish choice.

And at home we always had a roast on Sunday, and things like mince or chops during the week. That continued up until I went to uni in 1967. It might be true that other families ate less meat, but we weren't at all well off and we seemed to eat loads of it. Bloody hell, I've lived through history :))
