Do you have evidence for that? When I was a child (in the fifties) we hardly ever had a meal without meat, and now I hardly ever have a meal WITH meat (I'm not a vegetarian) unless I'm eating out. There were very few options for meals without meat in those days - all I can remember is things like Cauliflower Cheese.

I hadn't noticed them either. How long have they been up there? -

She told me the same as you. The council has a schedule and surely if one or two people in a street are reporting a missed collection, they should investigate to see if the whole street has been missed out - and make sure it doesn't happen again. Surely they are not sending a separate van out for each missed collection report?

If you don't want to keep the wheelie bin, you can continue to use the boxes. Some people appear to like all the plastic :-S, judging by some of the posts on This Thread!

DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Brown bin Food waste collected this morning... > > Fox.. xxxxxx So was mine, but it should have been collected yesterday. What is the point of having a schedule if they don't stick to it? And I ordered a smaller green bin on 21 September - exactly four weeks ago today - and there's no sign of that arriving, either, despite the council saying they would swap it for the existing one "as soon as they can". I know this recycling change was a big one, and some mistakes are to be expected whilst it's bedding in, but even so .... we are just the people who are posting about them on here. How many more must there be across the whole borough? Is anybody at the council monitoring the new scheme to make sure it's working as it should be?

Just had 3 people knock on my door re Loft Insulation

And of course you'd have to clear the loft of boxes etc before they could lay additional insulation, how on earth could they lay it otherwise? I've only got part of my loft boarded, which I use for storage, and I didn't get the extra insulation laid there. I was told by The Energy Saving Trust who give impartial advice on things like this, that boxes of stuff in effect acts as insulation in any case - although it would have been possible to increase the amount of insulation in those areas by raising the floor, but I just couldn't face the hassle. -

I've just had the FOURTH person call at my door about this in a matter of a few days. Apparently they are from a company called S.I.G. Energy. As I have told them EACH TIME that I've already had my grant and had my loft insulated, you would think they might coordinate their records, no? Evidently not. -

Franklins - The Best Breakfast in Britain?
Sue replied to Muttley's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
the-e-dealer Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Whenever I go to Franklins which isn't often they > never seem to be really up to catering for > veggies. Do they do a veggie Breakfast? xxxxxxx Yes. Poached egg, tomatoes, bubble and squeak. But since several times the bubble arrived as just a not-particularly-tasty mound of mashed potato with a bit of cabbage in it, and didn't seem to have ever touched a frying pan or even an oven, I haven't had it since. And yes I complained each time, and in the end wrote to them (never received a reply). They also do a great Welsh Rarebit/Rabbit, also a veggie option, and very good value. Used to be a fiver, I think it's a bit more now. But the size of the portion seems to vary greatly from visit to visit ..... ETA: They also do excellent Scotch Woodcock. You could always remove the anchovies from the top or ask for it without them. The eggs are properly scrambled ie still runny :) -
Eh?

Never heard of supply and demand? Those traders are there because people who come to the market want their goods and will pay their prices, otherwise the traders wouldn't bother. If you're jealous of them, why not have a stall yourself if you think it just involves taking things from skips and sticking high price tags on them? There's already at least one thread discussing the nature of this market .....

Don't think the council actually pays anything, though I might be wrong - I've filed away all the paperwork now (in the newly insulated loft, so I can't be a***d to find it to check!!!). The council is associated with a particular loft insulation company, but when I compared costs, that company was more expensive than a firm where the council wasn't involved. -

Mrs TP Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The girl who knocked at ours told me it was a free > grant. xxxxxxx It is free if you are on certain benefits. If you aren't, you get a certain amount of the insulating paid (I can't remember how much, but it does make quite a difference to the cost). Different companies will charge you different amounts. However they all are obviously claiming the grant money back from the government, hence the hard sell. -

I have, as others have, expressed my view > but you seem to not accept that others can and are > likely to disagree with you. xxxxxxx You don't seem to have read my posts. 1. I did not say you don't care about a lot of things, I said maybe. Obviously as I don't know you, I don't know. 2. You have expressed your view, as have others, that you don't care about the colour. I accept that. However, a lot of people do, and I have also indicated that the visual environment has an impact. Even the council themselves accept that, which is why they have a Streetscape guide which includes guidance on things like signage colour and street bin colour. The only reason the Streetscape team were not consulted about the wheelie bin colour, apparently, is because it was considered that these bins came within property boundaries and were not part of the street environment. When it was pointed out to them at their council assembly on Wednesday that this was not actually so, they have agreed to change the bin colour in future to something more appropriate, ie a darker blue. OK? And now I have to go and get ready for a gig tonight, where hopefully the atmosphere will be rather more pleasant than some of the posts on this thread. Edited for typo

I have a psychology degree which included clinical psychology, and have done postgraduate research in psychology. Do you have a background in a relevant subject?

Champers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > I think Sue, we get the message...but we don't > have to agree with you and I'm in the camp of 'who > cares?!'. The colour really doesn't bother me at > all - xxxxxx But it does bother a number of other people, and if you don't care, others do. Maybe you don't care about a lot of things, it doesn't mean to say other people might not like to have their voice heard.

McSweeney Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I think the onus not to make statements about > things you know nothing about is on the people > making the odd connections (crime and blue bins) - > not those that are querying the connection. xxxxxx There are statistics indicating the relationship between the visual environment and crime, for example the New York zero tolerance of graffiti and litter. I suggest it's you who needs to back up your statements. Clearly there are no experiments specifically on bright blue wheelie bins :)) however if we had known they were coming in, it could have made a good undergraduate thesis subject for a psychology student. ETA: Too many variables to compare with another borough with dark blue bins now, would be much too complex to do properly.
-
Just one example I don't have time to do further research at the moment, but I'm sure I can find loads more examples. ETA: Unless you're a psychologist yourself, perhaps you'd be better advised not to make statements about things you clearly know nothing about :-S

Just had 3 people knock on my door re Loft Insulation
Sue replied to sandnot's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Just had two people knock on my door about exactly the same thing - "Have you had your grant?" When I said that people had only just been round, I was told "Yes it's my colleague, I've got to make sure he's doing his job properly." I pointed out that people were likely to get pretty pissed off being called on twice within a very short space of time about the same subject. I already got my grant some time ago, but I didn't use this company, I checked out what other providers were charging first (unless you are on certain benefits, you still have to pay something towards the cost of installation). -

Clearly that would cost too much. The council have agreed to order more appropriate dark blue bins in the future. Other councils appear to have managed to take the visual environment into account when ordering blue recycling bins, by ordering a darker less obtrusive blue, so I'm not sure why you think this is such an odd notion.
