Nobody knows what they would do in a similar situation. I would always have said that I would intervene, but I was once on a bus where a young man was attacked by two others and virtually kicked downstairs. The bus driver did nothing and nor did anyone else. Instead of going to help I retreated to the back of the bus out of the way. I'm not proud of this but all I can say is that there is a self-preservation instinct which kicks in, and you might not react in the way you would predict. We're not all heroes. And good for Sam, but given that he could have been killed or very badly hurt (and possibly is badly hurt) you might also argue that it would have been preferable to let the guy, who presumably would be caught on CCTV, get away with the televisions and let the police deal with it (once it was apparent that he was violently resisting).

So I'll have a small(er) green bin, a small brown bin for food waste, blue boxes for paper, glass, metal etc and bags for garden waste as needed. Which will hopefully all fit neatly in my relatively newly built bin recess :)

A tourist in Vienna is going through a graveyard and all of a sudden he hears music. No one is around, so he starts searching for the source. He finally locates the origin and finds it is coming from a grave with a headstone that reads "Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770- 1827". Then he realizes that the music is the Ninth Symphony and it is being played backward! Puzzled, he leaves the graveyard and persuades a friend to return with him. By the time they arrive back at the grave, the music has changed. This time it is the Seventh Symphony, but like the previous piece, it is being played backward. Curious, the men agree to consult a music scholar. When they return with the expert, the Fifth Symphony is playing, again backward. The expert notices that the symphonies are being played in the reverse order in which they were composed, the 9th, then the 7th, then the 5th. By the next day the word has spread and a crowd has gathered around the grave. They are all listening to the Second Symphony being played backward. Just then the graveyard's caretaker ambles up to the group. Someone in the group asks him if he has an explanation for the music. "I would have thought it was obvious" the caretaker says........ "He's decomposing."

We did in fact check out the Thomas More Hall as a possible venue for The Goose Is Out! when we were kicked out of the EDT, but for various reasons - including the high cost of hiring it - it was not suitable. And given what has happened now, it's just as well we didn't move there!

If Vale Street is the place near Rosendale Road, then yes, it is now recycling only, they don't take general rubbish. Manor Place off Walworth Road does, but is very badly signposted.

Hi Monica, hope you had a great break! Is the garden going to be in that fenced off bit on the right as you face the hospital? It looks like quite a large piece of land!

Saw four green parakeets fly over Crystal Palace Road this evening, squawking loudly (possibly attempting to compete with civilservant's dog!) My theory is that the parakeets are making a bid to take over East Dulwich prior to taking over the world. Sydenham Hill Woods are full of them :))

I happen to think that the visual environment is extremely important to people's mental health. These bins are like visual noise. If the relevant team wasn't consulted before they were introduced, then I think that's terrible. But I guess too late now to change the bins.

Items for sale described as "tasteful", "elegant", "lovely", "beautiful" etc.. I'll be the judge of that, thanks very much :))

It's all changed now down there, it used to be great big houses (including my primary school) in both Palace Road and Christchurch Road, now it seems to be mostly flats. Don't remember Francis and Son as we lived in Streatham, our local grocer was Peachells just opposite Streatham Station, or else Home and Colonial on the hill up towards St Leonard's Church. Don't remember either of them being particularly high class, but I do remember ration books :)) Also remember the first supermarket opening, it was a (what would be now) small Waitrose, very exciting serving yourself with a basket and smelling chicken on a spit!
