I must admit I've always avoided going into this shop purely because I hated the name. So I was very pleasantly surprised last night (nearest offie to the Dream Machine :)) )to see their wide range of bottled ale. Still ended up with the six for a fiver Stella as usual, though :)) - glad to find somewhere nearer than the Greek deli :))

That really is a total rip-off. I was always told you couldn't cut hair properly unless it was wet, and if someone tried to cut mine dry I'd walk out. If I die of liver disease, I shall be very sorry for myself but will also be clear that I had the choice to stop drinking and chose not to. If other people "judged" me for that I would probably be pissed off, but I would understand why they did. It can be hard to give something up even if you know it's bad for you. I knew someone who died of lung cancer in his early thirties leaving two young kids. He was a heavy smoker. But having a smear test doesn't even involve giving anything up except a bit of time to attend a GP appointment. Anyway whatever the ins and outs of why Jade Goody didn't do this, I still think the publicity is helpful in prompting other people to take appropriate steps to prevent/treat possible cancer.

I eat rice cakes. They're usually somewhere between around 85p and ?1.20 a packet, depending where you buy them. The other day I went into Somerfield. They had two kinds (same brand, same size) - sesame and plain. The sesame ones were around a quid. The plain ones had a big notice "Low Fat" and the price had shot up to ?1.50. The thing is - all rice cakes are low fat! They're just made of, er, rice. There's nothing you could do to them to make them lower in fat than they already are. Rip-off or what? (6)

The reason for smear tests is precisely to catch this kind of cancer at a very very early stage. My mother died of cervical cancer because she had never had a smear test and by the time it was diagnosed it was too late to prevent it spreading. I am sorry for Jade Goody's situation, but unlike many other people with cancer, she had the opportunity to prevent it and/or to have it treated at a stage when such treatment could have been successful, and for whatever reason she chose not to take that opportunity. I agree with Keef that if the publicity persuades young (and older) women to go for smear tests and not to put off having symptoms checked out, then it can only be a good thing.
