I think its all of the above. I doubt that the proposed increase will address the problems it intends to. -

Yes I heard that too - very good point.

Thanks for that Hal. > Re: the oil spill - from the immediate human point > of view it is everything you say it is but in > terms of earth's geological history it will leave > hardly a trace ? a mere drop in the ocean of time. W-ell yes but....we could say that about any natural disaster if we compared it against the geological timescale which is too vast to be of use here (IMO), especially if we're talking about mitigation in our lifetime. Relative to geological time a human's life expectancy equates to 0.55 seconds out of a 12-month calendar. So if we compressed geological time into 12 months the industrial revolution would just begin as the clock strikes midnight on 31 December. So by that rationale (if this was the lounge, I'd link to John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson's "filthy animals" debate ;-)) and perspective, if there are any major disasters then yes, the planet would eventually rebuild itself as you say. As it has done before we arrived eg. mass extinctions, meteorite bombardment but now we're here it would be good to try to prevent/mitigate disasters. Interesting to see that the drilling contractor's claims of limited liability are now being questioned by the US govt. The capping of the spill not looking likely and the containment relief wells won't be ready till Aug. They are now worried about the impact of weather - winds and potential start of the Hurricane season spreading the spill.

I've got to say I'm surprised that this hasn't been moved to the Drawing Room as its such a serious topic. Anyway, please tell me that this chilli loving 'click' cannot spare 15 minutes to make your own chilli oil You can buy those little dried chillies from SMBS for about 80p per bag. Tsk, tsk. *Disappointed of East Dulwich*

Hi Mark, I had to replace my old hybrid bike and had no idea what to get so I got good advice from the forum here. I'm really happy with the Trek 7.3 FX that I bought locally. It's a good idea to try out a few different brands though to see what suits you best. Ladymuck is absolutely correct that those larger stores are hit and miss depending on what member of staff you get. > This one > http://www.gumtree.com/london/42/59421742.html > looks good but seeing as it was purchased in > January yet has been "serviced annually" and > there's no photo makes me suspicious, plus the > fact a new one is ?700, asking ?220 for it is too > good to be true methinks. If the bike was purchased new in Jan, it may have been due for its first (should be free) service after 4-6 weeks so that could explain it although yes, the price does sound unbelievably cheap. > Is there a legit place to buy secondhand, serviced > bikes? Does Balfes (or what ever it's called now) > do second hand bikes? I don't think B.C. Bikes (formerly Balfe's) do second-hand bikes though. I'd pop in and have a chat with them, they are really knowledgable and don't pressure you to buy anything either. Good luck.

Hal - blimey, how patronising I must have sounded re: hydrocarbon formation but at least you probably 'got' my (dated in-joke) reference to reservoir engineers not understanding geology ;-) Yes, I know about the Moho but not so much about the 1960s project I'm afraid. I don't fully understand your point (quoted below) so think we'll have to agree to disagree on the GoM oil spill and subsequent pollution (I'm no expert on sedimentary or structural geol): PS. I will admit to having a fossil collection (somewhere) although its hardly museum quality :))

Firstly, "my name is Katie1997 and I am an addict". Secondly, will you stop posting stuff about things like this? Very distracting ;-) Thirdly, I love it really, here goes: I advise that you try tamarind sauce (had it at an Indian wedding over the weekend, its FAB with spicy food). I don't know any brands to recommend, I have real tamarind from SMBS, but I am sure you can buy it in paste form which would be easier. Mushroom ketchup is pretty good sloshed in British-style food. Gives it more depth. Tabasco is always a winner. There's a chipotle pepper variety you should try if not already done so. Chilli jam is great with cheeses and cold meats. I made my own although it turned out to be way too sweet. I was trying to copy one that I had bought at a food festival ('Boasty's best' - it was quite clear with flecks of chilli suspended in it, I think due to the addition of apple but I couldn't recreate it). The Really Garlicky Company has a lovely garlic relish (if you like garlic) and the Isle of Wight garlic farm also has good products. PS. Dragon's blood Sean? Wow! Respect. PPS. Woof - your larder sounds scarily like mine.

....did someone mention Scoop's ice-cream? I would be a willing snitch for some of that.

I think Sean may mean that your original comments didn't appear to be referring to that blog? Apologies if I'm mistaken. > On the geological time scale the oceans have > probably consumed billions of barrels of naturally > liberated petroleum. Hydrocarbons have formed over (geological) time in certain conditions. Are you by any chance a reservoir engineer? If so then you won't know much about geology* so I won't need to retract my comments above. *I don't really mean that btw ;-)

Fair point although most 'oil' companies are already operating as 'energy' companies and they have a good understanding of the need for alternatives (meanwhile keeping the lights on). There has been a lot of investment and R&D by these companies into advanced energy technologies (like fuel cells, photovoltaics, better battery technology, advanced biofuels) as well as looking at energy efficiency and consumer behaviour/understanding.

HAL9000 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- It's official: Top Kill plan has failed. Next W-ell.........its LMRP now - deployment of a lower marine riser package (eg. a containment system - who makes up these terms? - to cut and remove the damaged riser from the blow-out preventer*). Lets hope it works. *(BOP)

tonyh - I completely agree but you do know that Gazzano's is in a traditionally (London-) Italian area? So I guess they expect - and receive - fantastic quality from their local deli. Maybe if we all ask nicely the people in EDD will stock those items too? (btw, I have no idea what they are but they sound great) :) -

Facebook status updates that make specific reference to someone thats not even on there as a "friend" .....why bother? eg. "Love you mom, you're the best" I hate that I do.

I know I shouldn't have but...I laughed when the annoying guy on rollerskates fell flat on his back in the middle of the number 12 bus. He had been zooming up and down the bus in an irritating manner all the way from camberwell. When his mates got off at the bottom of barry rd and the bus turned sharply that's when it happened. I did ask if he was ok tho. And I waited till I got off before laughing too loudly... Oh and it was on the way home from a particularly stressful day when annoying people on rollerskates should not be allowed on the same bus as grumpy me.

...It was a guilty pleasure as it was not so much 'ours' as 'his' and I rarely got to drive it :( Liking the cooking thing, very keith floyd of you! I think I will admit to loving seinfeld, esp George who makes me laugh...
