  1. I can't see this happening....though they will have to think about future security - and diversity - of their energy supplies. Perhaps they'll go down the Brazilian biofuels route? Although oil is currently cheaper... The US administration have halted drilling on deep-water exploration rigs which will in turn delay future production. Price of oil will then rise and they will need to rely on imports. The whole incident has seriously escalated now they have a better idea of the figures and the government has come in for some harsh criticism also. I had to edit to be clear its only on deep-water wells.
  2. Sorry to interrupt, may I ask, dear HonaloochieB, if you are related to the person who started this very popular thread? Thank you. Edited to say, in your own time....finish your HobNobs. No rush. But I am wondering...
  3. Yeah....I can visualise an 'East Dulwich Mash Cafe' on Northcross Road with people dressed up as 'giant potatoes' handing out menus and special offers outside. There will be potato-patterned tablecloths and matching wallpaper.... There is NOTHING like that in ED so it is definitely missing this food-wise and wholly relevant to the topic ;-)

I think that whole area has been subject to 'regeneration' or whatever its called..my brother works nearby so knows some nice places for lunch. Could do with a lime soda now... What about a pie and mash shop in ED? Or even better....just mash? Mmmmmm :))
  5. .....relaxing at home with the radio playing in the background, the birds singing noisily outside, reading a good book, some lovely coffee and the anticipation of having more free time and going away to a wedding where I will be reunited with friends I haven't seen for a while. Yay!

KidKruger - that made me smile. You'll be lucky to get anything less than Rs250 in the wealthy UK. I recently ate in a South Indian restaurant in Glasgow's Merchant City and I couldn't believe that a dosa cost ?10! 700 bucks? ::o Which reminds me....ED doesn't have anywhere to eat like this
  7. Y-es. Already done. *clicks fingers on both hands*
  8. I can see (after a long absence of cycling/London) that there are a LOT more cyclists out there now than there ever used to be. Doubt that this is due to the improvement of "cycle" lanes though. I hate to say it but... in my recent experience, its the behaviour of other cyclists and pedestrians that is most unbelievable. Some of them take such risks and are all over the road, going through red lights and turning down streets without any indication. Maybe I am in the minority but buses haven't caused me any problems...so far. They used to be the things I hated most whilst cycling. *thinks....if its a bus, anything but the dreaded 12 :))*

Hmmm.....depends. A bit of multi-tasking could come in handy here. And don't guys just love to get advice from their girlfriends on how to redecorate/furnish their apartment? No? ;-)
  10. In ED.....it definitely would be great to have a South Indian restaurant as long as the dosas weren't ridiculously over-priced. There is something fabulous about eating food from a banana leaf too. Loving the Jack Rabbit Slim American-style diner idea. 24 hrs. Malted milkshakes, proper burgers and vanilla cokes all round.

  12. On a train going through a long tunnel when the person sitting behind me, having a conversation on their mobile (of course), constantly asks the other person who is clearly no longer connected.. "are you still there?" NO - THEY BLOODY WELL AREN'T YOU STUPID FUCKING TWAT
  13. lol - me too, esp the bit about them being ironed. I hate sheets that aren't (and yes, I know life is too short etc etc). PS. I heard that real silk pillowcases are good for your hair although no idea how or why.
  14. Oh-kay.......I'm guessing because its a click, that you have to convince an existing click member to nominate you? How delightfully click-ish B) ps. what time is it?
  15. giggirl - I loved reading your message, its so true. Very well said. xxx

(Sorry, a bit personal - feel free to > ignore). Yes I did. I seem to remember he seemed fairly relaxed and cheerful when the airline car arrived to collect me. As the car turned in our road I seem to remember sseeing him unload crates of his beloved german beer from the garage to the fridge; my memory is a bit hazy but there may have been a bottle of his best armagnac coming out too ;) > > PS. 17. Ssssssh........don't tell anyone but I heard it was actually a top-secret delivery* to some EDF people. *square plates (yes, really!)
  18. Tony - all good advice on here. Don't underestimate how difficult it can be (IMO) to have a foot in two different continents. For example, those paid visits home every other month sound great but can prove to be difficult periods of emotional adjustment every time you go back and forward between your 'old' life in the UK and the new. (even more so if the culture you are immersed in is vastly different) A year can go quickly but bear in mind that the company may try to extend your contract and it can be difficult to refuse some offers, once you have 'settled' into your new environment. But first and foremost, I think you need to consider your wife's wishes (of course, she will be worried about your safety there.) Then if you can come to some kind of 'compromise' - whether the country holds personal attractiveness to you. If not, whats your motivator? money? experiences? career development (is it a short-term means to a long-term shared goal) I have been in the same position as you, although not Lagos, and I went on my own. Good luck with it. PS. I miss my chauffeur but would rather have him here in London - imagine it?! :))

  21. Official Announcement: Let it be known that the "powers that be" gave me a bag of gold stars. So......I hereby award the first of these prestigious, coveted awards to: *drum roll* .........brum. Because I like what he said. (yes, if you go back a few hundred pages, you will see that his post has been awarded a shiny, flashing gold star icon in the top right hand corner) PS. Its great reading everyone's views. Is that a lily-livered, non-combatative thing to say? Good. :) PPS. Btw, is the Cliques-R-US meeting still on for tomorrow? Double Good. :))
  22. I heard *on good authority* that it will be a 'proper' tea and cucumber sandwich shop. Serving sherry into the small hours. With butler service and all that. Strict membership rules. Oh, and two-year waiting list.
  23. Agreement to relax new rules about flying and volcanic ash density - because they are all losing millions, suddenly its worth the risk!!!!
