  1. An event that might interest all in what's on section
  2. Augusto and Michaela Odone were both given honorary degrees for their work in developing treatment for myelin after their son was diagnosed with it with no available cure or treatment. It was later dramatised in the movie 'Lorenzo's Oil. A perfect example of two ordinary people, not famous or public figures, driven simply by the need to 'do' something....something which gave them as much knowledge as aonyone studying for a degree in that field.
  3. You're a high class hooker?.. Well I didn't like to say but *cough* lol Yes there will be 16 finalists not 12.........apparently ;-)
  4. The first paragraph was bigotted and displayed prejudice against a group of people and therefore WAS racist. Given that most modern day descendents of Roman gypsies live in homes (many of which they own) and are law abiding shows just how ignorant your comments really are. Anyway this thread is about the circus and animal welfare and NOT gypsies.
  5. Ah but you are wrong in thinking that all honorary degrees are given to public figures that haven't worked for them. Some honorary degrees are given to people who have worked in fields of research for example and 'have' therefore done the equivalent of years of self educating (esp those who push medicine or science forward). I totally agree that some degrees are given to people in fields totally unrealted to their work and so can not possibly reflect an equivalent knowledge to those that study for four years. But similarly there are those that dedicate their lives to a field without a degree and in time become as knowledgeable, or even more so than those that have completed a four year degree.
  6. I think he would do well with groups although I suspect he dreads the extra work they involve.
  7. I won't say what I do but I know Talkback and it's execs very well.
  8. You both hit the nail on the head. Employers want the most productive and reliable person they can find (and rightly so). Tax payers just want everyone working so that they don't have to keep them. Not an easy thing to solve.
  9. Nope you are absolutely wrong to say that Cowell decides the finalists for all the catagories.
  10. Louis's catagory was dire. Yet they raised the age because of an abundance of talent to make the boys catagory stronger???? The is very little X factor amongst the finalists this year.
  11. You say that but then Simon would never have put Jedward through last year, so there is I think some autonomy. I agree with you though on the entertainment factor over talent factor.
  12. Please folks let's not descend into the childish mud slinging that pervades the lounge sometimes. There is a good debate to be had here and it should be enough to say that you diasgree without resorting to insult. Huguenot is right in that immigration is a complicated issue. I agree that the top heavy age demographics are a pressing isuue (60% of the welfare bill is spent on OAPS and pensions for example) but I disagree that immigration is the answer to balancing that out. Unemployment has to be taken into account. We have a lot of people not actively part of the labour force at the moment and that is a huge drain on our economy. Immigration, where it can be controlled sensibly and fairly, should always be relative to the percentage of unemployment (along with skills shortages) imo.
  13. Good point Loz!
  14. You old cynic you! She definitely went for quirky over vocal ability and it might come back to bite her. I think the young Madonna lookalike Katie has a nice vocal tone but she hardly managed an audition without messing up. Was sad to see Gamu not get through over Cher, who imo has very little talent at all beyond looking the part. Can't see anything outstanding or original this year apart from Rebecca.
  15. Thank you for your post Martin and I for one will continue to visit your circus every time it comes to town.
  16. FYI the circus EMPLOYS very talented artists from around the world and the entourage needed to tranport them. These days you can even do a degree in Circus skills and management. There are circus schools. Are Cirque Du Soleil the bandits you describe? The modern circus is a profession and business like any other employing performers that have far more talent than you can ever hope to have. You are talking bs as usual.
  17. I agree with you in the sense that the way meat is slaughtered is a moral issue for many people and also Halal and Kosher slaughter are directly attributed to religions that most people in this country don't follow. There was a phone in talk show on this on bbc london radio not so long ago and one of the points made was that Halal and Kosher meat was often cheaper to buy and process as it has less regulation around it..... I don't know if that is true or not, but to not tell people seems wrong. On the issue of animal welfare, I'm not sure death in an abattoir is always humane either, and we all know about chicken rearing. When we buy any meat we never know for sure (unless we are buying specifically sourced free range) just how humanely the animal has been kept or killed.
  18. Have reported your post to admin Pearson..hopefully they'll relegate it to the dustbin where it belongs.
  19. BUT - you can't knock 'goodwill to all men' etc Or Santa Claus and all the pressies he's gonna bring me >:D<
  20. I agree, I've always seen the horses on the rye and in pens as big as a stable. They look perfectly well and happy to me. Yes there was a time when some travelling circus's abused their animals and got away with it.....we all know that...but today there would be swift action if any cruelty were taking place. So I shall be going to the circus next week and will no doubt enjoy the show as much as I did last time the circus came to town :)
  21. Yes they do but they often fear for their lives.
  22. At the moment the desire for status means that these kind of people ridicule science, create ad hominen attacks on scientists, and claim there are no facts. The irony is that this kind of behaviour all comes from insecurity and a craving for social acceptance. The more this gang squeals, the more pathetic they look. I agree with this. And I'd add they quantify their ridicule with their 'intelligence'.....as though a middle class education equates that. It's a perverse use of social standing to protect what they have and justify why 'they' don't ever need to give anything up.
  23. The main problem with climate change data is that some of it conflicts. There are flaws in taking surface temperature data just as there are flaws in measuring the tropesphere and 'sceptics' seize on this. But the Artic Circle and Antarctic are warming up (whatever the causes may be) - and carbon can be measured in ice going back thousands of years. It doesn't require much of a shift to upset the climatic balance for life cease to continue to be able to live. And even if we take the view that there is no global warming going on.....the fact remains that global population is growing rapidly, and the waste we dump all over the globe as a result, combined with the resources we are stripping from it (resources that have taken millions of years to form) says we will reach an end point sooner or later, when the planet just can't take anymore. That's just common sense. As a speices we are greedy, selfish and fill our lives and houses with meaningless sh1t. It's an appalling waste.
  24. Also why would any trader be happy to park a few hundred metres away and who would enforce that?
  25. Thank goodness for Poundland......can do all my Christmas shopping for a tenner >:D
