Have never seen anyone doing 60mph plus on Barry Road....45 maybe. There won't be any speed cameras now that the government have cut the road safety fund...indeed some areas have shut off all their existing speed cameras as a result because they can't afford to operate them. When cycling down Barry Road I know that cars may no see me before they drive out but I cycle with that in mind and accordingly. Similarly most drivers apply the same common sense when driving.

I've just looked at their licence. You can view it here The sale of alcohol from the bar is only licensed till 11.00 pm And no part of the license allows them to have music or other entertainments beyond midnight (earlier on Sundays) with dancing limitted to 9pm. AND it also says as part of their license that - '348 - All windows will be fixed shut'. I hate to be a stickler on this but the licence they hold would have been granted with consideration for local environmental impact and it sounds as though they clearly are breaching the terms of their license on a regular basis.

The owner needs to ensure that noise and music levels do not disturb neighbours - that's standard for all commercial premises. So if a polite word to the owner doesn't change anything then there are officals at the council that will intervene upon complaint.

Well now he needs to do history too. Because his utter lack of knowledge of the problems of Northern Pakistan's mountain areas (and indeed the problems that every Pakistanni president has in dealing with it) is what was so truly stupid about the comments he made. You can not change hundreds of years of tribal culture overnight. On that level he's almost as stupid as Bush Junior. The 1940 comment (irregardless of being historically incorrect) was nothing more than a psychophantic effort to suck up to President Obama. And then saying Iran had a nuclear weapon says just exactly where he is in his mind on Iran. It's the same flaw that Bush and his neo-cons and indeed Blair displayed in telling themselves what they wanted to believe so many times that they actually believed it (i.e. the WMD debacle and Bush's linking of 9/11 to Iraq), irregardless of the evidence and truth. That of all things is a worrying thing to see in a national leader.

Even if the licence runs to 2am - noise is expected to be contained. I would defintiely have a word with the liscensing section because open windows that allow music and entertainments to spill out is probably something they would have a view on. The premises will be required to do something about it.

There's not a lot that can be done about bad drivers really. And speeding drivers are a menace but again are found everywhere. There's no chance of speed cameras after the above mentioned road safety cuts. The other problem is that Barry Road is a B road...so speed humps and pinch points can not be freely used. Traffic lights and Pelican crossings might be the best option but whether there's any money for that is another question.

That's absolutely right Jeremy. It's one thing to let people buy their council homes, but to then not allow the money from the sale to be reinvested in housing was bizarre (and politically motivated rather than based on any real thought about housing provision). Most councils just banked the money and refused to spend it in protest. I doubt we will ever be able to replace the 8 million social homes lost from the scheme. Cameron though has recently suggested incentives to local authorities who new build - which amounts to a grant equivalent to the council tax that the property when finished would yield. Ironically that is essentially a tax subsidy - albeit a very samll one against the cost of building new homes. Councils prefer (for obvious reasons) PPI schemes - part private investment - anyway. What council has the money after all to build housing stock in the numbers required? I totally agree about restriction on resale and I would go further and say letting as well. Because what many tenants did, was to buy their council home...and then quckly jump on the buy-to-let ladder (because that after all requires very little capital investment - another thing that needs to change - and the FSA are now looking at that) to make that their main home whilst letting out the council property.

I just think he doesn't think things through properly before speaking. He's not the first president/ prime minister to make such faux pas after all and no doubt he won't be the last.

Add to that his recent gaffes internationally (junior partner in 1940 even though Pearl Harbour hadn't yet happened and criticising Pakistan whilst in India and then saying Iran had a nuclear weapon pmsl).......he's shaping up to be the Prince Phillip of politics nicely.

Cameron came out to say it won't now be scrapped. I also see that Clegg is in trouble according to yesterday's polls as well. His seat is in Sheffield and voters are furious he didn't oppose the scrapping of the grant to Sheffield Forgemasters. I know why he didn't speak up, because he's a Lib Dem and anti-nuclear but the loss to Sheffield (3000 new jobs) and to the country (as Sheffield would have been only one of TWO plants in the world making these parts - now all the orders will go to the one plant in Japan) could actually cost him his seat at the next general election. Damn right too.

It's a good point....to be fair to Cameron he is just throwing ideas into the ring at the moment. There's a whole debate to be had before anything is shaped.....and I think he'll run into trouble before any of it becomes law.

Southwark Concil owns or nearly oen all the property where did they get the monies to but/build these propeties? Various sources over the past 100 years. Some was government money (at times when massive social housing programmes were needed such as in the 30's, and post war and for obvious reasons), some was european development money (for redeveloping the bigger 60's estates), some has been private investment from the private sector (the route in more recent times for new builds). And the revenue from rents/sales has more than repaid any expense by the tax payer over those years as well as covering the costs of basic maintenance. The money stays in the system as opposed to tax payers money being used to pay the mortgages of private landlords through top up Housing Benefit to the millions of people in full time work that don't earn enough to pay the private sector rent. That is tax payers money that is lost forever (billions of it) - and it's funny how none of you calling for change to social housing have anything to say about that! mamora man, Social housing is not always a welfare benefit linked to income. Someone many be vulnerable for a whole range of other reasons, health, mental health and social housing serves to give them 'security' of tenure. It is necessary for some people to have security of tenure. To suggest that means testing should be the only factor to consider shows a complete lack of knowledge or understanding of the range of conditions under which social housing is allocated. The point you make about social housing being a transition is something I touched on earlier when I pointed out that's what it used to be - when ordinary working people had some chance of getting a mortgage and buying a house. It is now something that is pretty much an impossible dream for the vast majority of council tenants. The salary required to make that leap from social to private rented accomodation (like for like) is so wide in London that most council tenents will never make it. In some other areas of the country, the gap is much smaller (because private sentor rents are on average locally lower)...and so there aren't the same lengthy waiting lists and so on. There is a direct correlation between the the gap between social and private rents and the length of the waiting list at a local authority. Secondly any proposal on salary just won't work because the moment someone has a salary that might be deemed 'too high' they'll just exercise their right to buy....or worse still they won't take jobs with salaries that might see them forced out of their home. It is just not a workable policy. Nor would it actually free up that many homes. I do agree with your proposals on improving supply but your impression that immigration is somehow a significant factor in demand for social housing is nonsense I'm afraid. A non EU foreign national can not register on the housing list if they do not have home office right to remain (it's a myth that illegal immigrants get council housing - they can not register without that home office document). EU residents come under the same rules that we all do as EU residents. We could close our borders tomorrow - it won't change a thing. The real problem is that some rents are just too high in the private housing market, and many wages are too low to pay them and there is no solution without including measures to allow that gap to close as well (long term of course).

What kind of hours are we talking about? Because after 11.30pm there are rules on noise pollution no matter what licence you have.

Do you have any figures on the number of accidents there in say the past year. The government has a measure for what defines an accident blackspot. I personally don't thinhk there's anything wrong with the junction (it's the same as thousands of junctions all over London). Have driven accross it many times. Always stop and never drive out unless the road is clear for me to do so. Most accidents are the fault of the poor judgement of the offending driver anyway...not the junction itself.

That's very interesting Sean. I do know that there was disdain that Southwark Council were not themselves building any council owned homes as part of the development. It's not usually the case that Housing Associations price at higher than market value (usually the opposite in fact) so this might reflect the current nerves that banks have at the moment about lending to effectively lower income buyers. We'll watch and see what happens. France also regulates private sector rents Expat and forces landlords to offer long term leases so that tenants are secure. The result is that, like Germany, as many people rent as buy and are more than happy to do so as they are not seeing more than half their salaries go to their landlords. Neither Germany nor France are suffering negative equity for it. We have the most inflated housing market in Europe.

I know what you are saying quids and there's truth in it...but it's a little more complicated than I can get into just as I'm about to hit the pub....lol.....but I will come back to you later....because things like the docks and shipping (which was booming post-war as we were rebuilding many of the world's lost shipping).... actually were damaged in the late 50's by a different British problem of not thinking ahead and bringing in change - which of course we know was something also prevented by some unions. And then there's lack of investment in replacing those lost industries and jobs with other industry - that's where I think Thatcher went fundementally wrong imo...but again it's a more complex discussion to be had. That is not the sole cause quids. You are trying to blame the chinese and internet investment for the entire failure of our country (amongst others) to develop a stable economy over the past thirty years. The banks gave credit to people who couldn't afford it (be it credit cards or mortgages) and were perfectly happy for them to pay the interest only...did the chinese make them do that? Banks care only about their profits...they don't care about the long term financial well being of any individual - only how much money they can make. I totally agree we were part of a global movement. But please at least acknowledge that it was a wheel we jumped onto under a conservative government. Have you forgotten Black Monday (or was it a Wednesday?) and Nigel Lawson? Nothing Labour or democrat about him! As for who benefitted...the Thatcher government starved public services and p*ssed on the poor - you can't deny that either - Labour followed by reinvesting and yes we are all better off for that. So what does that tell you?.....Labour traditionally work for more people than the conservatives (even I don't totally believe that but the point is made). Thatcherite conservatism destroyed whole communities of people - Cameron is about to do his own version by adding at least half a million to the ranks of the unemployed - some estimate it might be as much as 1.3 million. Both Labour and Conservative governments have failed to produce enough growth in public sector jobs. And it's not a debate about Labour or Conservative anyway. It's a question of balanced economics and morality (irregardless of who holds power). A fair and balanced economy is healthier than the lopsided top heavy economy we have had for the last 25 years. All governments have been guilty of building and maintaining that unbalanced and fragile economy and of ignoring the advice of extremely intelligent and independent economists along the way. They all have to come back down to earth and start wroking for the good of ALL of us (and for the long term) instead of short term boom for the privilieged and lucky few. We are one of the least productive countries in Europe - well no wonder when so many people feel disinfranchised? Btw I don't read the Guardian. Oooh and forgot to say that it may well be that cheap international credit allowed Labour to fund some of it's public service programmes, but even that says something unhealthy about this country - that for all the wealth in it - we can't fund essential public services from our own GDP and economy. Is there a case for saying that income tax needs to rise?

Keef, are you saying that flats built for key workers are not being sold to key workers? Gina, dangerous boilers and gas fittings are a very serious matter under the law. ALL landlords are required to have a gas safety inpection and boiler service done annually and you can ask to see a copy of the gas safety certificate at any time. Failure to comply is a criminal offence. You do have rights also. You are entitled to challenge what the rent you pay should be and can go to a rent committee tribunal if you think the rent you are being charged is above what you should be charged on a property in that condition (compared to others of similar). The rent you are paying is average for the borough. I'm going to pm you and discuss your tenancy rather than dicussing details in the public forum (just to protect your privacy). The good news is that the LHA are paying what they deem to be a fair rent - so you are unlikely to have to make up the shortfall. If asked for the money, refuse and take the matter to a fair rent committee (the landlord can not evict you during the rent tribunal process either and they have to accept the outcome) and if the landlord wins it would be the LHA who would have to pay the difference. If the LHA wins then the Landlord is owed nothing. Housing Associations and Councils regularly challenge rents where they are forced to place people in the private sector (which is why some landlords won't take referals) so it's not uncommon for Landlords to be forced to accept lower rents and anyone who is a tenant can challenge their rent in the private sector if they think it's too high compared to like for like properties in the area.
