  1. Ahem. Mattham, let me correct you: "Driving into the cyclists' box at the lights (obviously ? motorbikes too ? look at the picture on the road, is there an engine? No." YES THERE IS IN TOWER HAMLETS!!! And that's the problem there is no London-wide rule. In Richmond motorcylists can ride in bus lanes. And in Westminster also many of the bus lanes are biker friendly. And in Tower Hamlets Motorcycles are encouraged to share the space at the front of the lights with cyclists. My biggest problem with cyclists is those who undertake at speed behind and to the left of lorries or vans ie they are hidden, so that as the lorry driver flahes his lights to let me turn right in front of him I have to be doubly careful in case some cycling twat is undertaking that lorry. I hit one doing just that once and I was the one whose insurance company had to pay fifteen grand odd to the cyclist. Do they (and scooter riders) seriously believe that when they get hit they won't hurt? In the above accident my armoured motorcycle jacket, heavy protected boots and gloves prevented me from getting hurt when my motorcycle landed on me. Idiot cyclist was in lycra and there was blood all over the place because he landed on his chin. Cycle helmets don't protect chins. And small print on most cycle helmets say anyway that they are not guaranteed for effectiveness OVER FIFTEEN MILES AN HOUR!!! But many cyclists are fine upstanding caring members of the community and ride safely because they DO KNOW they will hurt if they ride like twats.
  2. Noooooooooo don't be meeeeeeeean. He can do what he wants but he was looking for a new hairdressers so I recommended Vicky! Honest!!!!!!!!
  3. But you'd miss the beauty of watching a cat lick herself clean (mine takes HOURS even when she IS clean), or watch a kingfisher in the park seemingly doing nothing, or watching a flower close its leaves at the end of a day, all to be witnessed here on earth. I wish snobbery was banned!
  4. OH MY GOD Louisa, she'll be by those AWFUL FLATS???!!! Do you mean (cough splutter choke) COUNCIL flats where.... POOR people live, and being thus poor they must therefore be evil bad nasty scum out-of-working class villains? How will she survive? Oh wait, she'll survive because people who live in those flats might just be nice people too.
  5. You say "I wish" when I said motorcycle, make it happen !!!
  6. A subject close to my heart. Jenni, welcome to the area. I live on Peckham Rye the SE15 side, diagonnaly opposite from you. I am a motorcyclist but occasionally have been known to do the walking thing. The perception of danger, and the fear of getting attacked and so on has little if anything to do with the realistic chance that you may be. Basically, if you look like a victim.... Also remember that of those that are attacked, most of them are men, and most of the men are black. So statistically speaking you're already in the minority (only going on gender alone!) When walking (specially on a long walk to Greenwich if you choose to do that) always look like you know where you are going, do not talk on your mobile, and have your keys to hand, so that SHOULD you think someone is following you you may look like you're coming home soon, sort of thing. Be aware of who is around you. Think proactively. Many people including me use iPods but I am still aware of who is around me without being paranoid...! Make friends with your neighbours and offer them your mobile number so they may offer you yours in case of emergency. Be proactive. The area is lovely. And definitely enjoy the park. On a thread on this part of the forum I started a section about the Southwark Council safer neighbourhood teams and the phone numbers for them which include contacts with PCSOs, Community Wardens and the actual police themselves. Find it, and put those numbers on your mobile. Get to know your safer neighbourhood teams. Volunteer to be a streetleader (go on the Southwark Council Website and find the link, or email [email protected] to ask him about it. Streetleaders basically offer to look after the area they live in and report things that need fixing, whether it be graffiti, broken fences, dumped stuff, abandoned cars, etc etc. We have meetings to discuss stuff and also get to go on Ward Panel meetings with the police. it's about making the effort and by posting on here you have begun! Having said the above, welcome again, take part, and I hope you enjoy the walking and exploring whatever time of day or night!
  7. Nope, she is a Mum who looks after her kids and works on Saturdays. The others are fine I am sure in the week but I only recommend who I know to recommend. MEANWHILE MrPR had his long locks shorn off there by Vicky just yesterday - ?16 for a restyle I'll have you know - and I am here to tell you that Vicky did a FABULOUS job and I rang her immediately afterwards to thank her. So what do you need these fancy named themed hairdressers for? Go to TopKnot on Cheltenham Road, say hello to the Lils and the Dots and the Ethels and Vi and allow yourself to have a perfectly lovely haircut there. But I am only recommending Vicky who works Saturdays though I am sure the others are perfectly good too. 020 7639 0454 I have nothing to do with the hairdressers and am not being paid to advertise them.
  8. The apricot goes mouldy and the ape dies of fungal related complications. I wish my cat was friendlier to the person who is going to be looking after her for 2 months. No wait, I can see that one coming and I DO want her back. I hate cooking and I wish I could afford to eat out more.
  9. blinder999 that article you quoted was by a man from the London Cycling Campaign. Of course he was against it. The report showed proof that motorcyclists using bus lanes were involved in few accidents. But TFL didn't like the sound of that so they buried the report. On the A41 and A23 where I can and do ride in the bus lanes, when I see a cyclist guess what I do? Indeed, I ride my motorbike safely and overtake them when it is safe to do so. I am First Aid Trained, and also took a Motorcycle First Aid Course (ie for street scenes) and I take responsibility. Do not assume that just because I advocate the annihilation of all road signs and street furniture except lighting and adequate direction signs, and road bumps and unbelievably stupid chicanes and so on, that I am an anarchist. Well, I am a bit of an anarchist, but I do strongly believe that if you put decision making back in the hands of the people then we will learn and get used to making good decisions again based on shared common sense and courtesy. Of course, the government have slowly eroded our needs to make decisions for ourselves so it may take about five years of utter carnage on the streets before we get used to doing it and taking the responsibility, but hey, nothing happens immediately...
  10. It was either a spotted or a lesser spotted woodpecker and also a green woodpecker that visited our birdfeeder. Didn't count spots so don't know if it was lesser or morer but anyway we're on the SE15 side of Peckham Rye Park in between park and Nunhead Cemetery. Gonna be out kingfisher spotting soon. Oh damn, turning into a country twitcher. Stop that behaviour now dammit. [Gets on motorcycle and roars up the road swerving in between the hard dangerous bumpy traffic angering things...] That's better. jb1000 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I've got to check it out. 11. What's your wish, Domitianus? 12. I bet it is, fner fner...
  13. What? I pay about ?10 a time at TopKnot and that is for a dry cut which basically means they spray it with water to dampen it but they don't wash it for you. Nice trim, nice cut. Get up there. Ask for Vicky on a Saturday and anyone else Mon to Friday.
  14. TopKnot, top of Cheltenham Road. They're an untrendy cheap hairdressers full of very old lady customers called Ivy and Lil and Dot and their prices are cheap but the work is absolutely perfect. And they cut men's hair too if you're not a snob, and they're great.
  15. I hope to make this one. Depending on evening work which at the moment is blank for 29th. Ahhhhh the Uplands... I remember when it was a rock music pub with rock-music-version of dancing. Motorcycles parked outside too.
  16. SOOOOOOO? What did you do? Accept it or tell 'em to go to hell? Or are you being shy now and not going to tell us of your decision?
  17. Andy Partridge of XTC. He's worked with loads of different people, you know. And influenced heaps of others too. About Nick Cave, he wrote the music for a play I recently saw. Kafka's Metamorphosis at Lyric Hammersmith by a fabulous Icelandic theatre company. Fabulous play, brilliant music. Mad ingenius actors!

    Hangman

    _ _ _ / _ / _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ / _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ / _ _ _ FIlm title. OK I'm bored now. If you get it then it's your turn. It can only be one film and I don't know how to draw the Hangman thing anyway.
  19. I wish I had more good luck.
  20. Come back Azul and answer the questions!!! I also work in copyright law. And actor and writer.
  21. I thought this was a thread telling us where they would be a line up of ticket touts so we can beat them. Yah boo.
  22. That is soooo fabulous. I was just reading my latest issue of Peckham Society News and indeed it mentioned that someone had seen a kingfisher in the park! I live in a flat overlooking the park so I hope the kingfisher honours me with its presence soon. On my birdfeeder I get all the usual suspects and also a very shy woodpecker now and again. Then 20 mins on my motorcycle gets me into Oxford Street and free motorcycle parking. GOD I love living here! Do report any other sightings of the kingfisher, people. Does he hang out by the big pond or the Japanese pond? Does he or she have a mate? Do the folk at the cafe see him?
  23. Well done Elected Councillor Richard Thomas. Having ridden down Walworth Road I did find it peculiarly smooth. Does shared useage mean that pedestrians can now LEGALLY walk across the road in front of me and then if I run them over I am in trouble? Does it mean I can ride on the pavement and if they walk into ME I still get in to trouble? How does a blind person (sorry, is that an un-PC way of saying someone with no sight) tell when the pavement ends and the road begins? I like the Walworth Road improvements. But then all roads are great when they've been resurfaced! Isn't it about time a utility company came along and dug it up again!? ;)
