Youth Offenders move in by Goose Green Park!
PeckhamRose replied to Alicia's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Michael Palaeologus Wrote: "I think I might start up a knife sharpening business on the Green. Should do well." You'll never match with a knife, the sharpness of your wit. Personally, I don't mind if the story is true. At least we have a focus when it all goes wrong. Hope your life in the "country" (where IS that, exactly?) is fabulous, Alicia. But when you find you have neighbours that don't pass your stringent tests, guess what, you're stuck with them. In London and other bigs towns we can concentrate on getting on with all the other neighbours! -
Yup, what lozzyloz says. Tho I do see quite a few landlords with nice expensive cars in their driveways these days. But for the most part in quite a lot of the pubs I see, they're struggling, and like most other businesses and services, the chains are winning.

Fined ?75 for dropping a cigar butt - fair?
PeckhamRose replied to seanmlow's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Well I also pick up the litter which is specially smug-making when I say to people who may be near me, " Would anyone like to help me pick up this litter?" and sometimes some do and sometimes some don't, but either way I pick it up. Halo drops when I also add I am a motorcyclist. I mean, blinder999 wrote about me on the roadbumps thread "And bikers on the moral highground wtf???" so I must be bad bad bad bad. It's frightening isn't it: bikers doing good things. I know a couple who are even blood donors. Some are advanced motorists and none of them throw litter out their car windows because they don't have any! But to be a litterbug is even worse than being a motorcyclist, in my opinion. Southwark Council reckon if you see someone driving their car and you get a good description of them and their car and the registration number, that if you see them throwing litter out of their car when on Southwark roads you can report them and they WILL write to the owners (who have probably just reported the car as stolen, of course!) and fine them. Me, I can't be arsed. I just follow them and throw the litter back in their open windows. Much more fun. Specially if the cigar(ette) still has a lit end. -

Hi - many stories does this block of flats consist of?

I don't mind paying taxes for other things I don't use, like the education system for kids I choose not to have, and some elements of healthcare and so on. I wouldn't mind paying taxes for a state supported postal service. We live in a society we are all part of even if some people choose to think they are not part of it. That society includes - or should include - all elements that make that society run smoothly. Police and all emergency services Healthcare Education Transport Postal services add your own here... ;)

Even more annoying aircraft noise?!
PeckhamRose replied to Rosyprimrose's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes indeed I had to close the windows last night, no not because of the noise you lot were making from across the park, but because the planes were flying in every minute wayyy past 11.00pm. Hey, this is life in the big city! -
Wasn't it the pesky Americans that broke the news anyway?

High street hanging baskets this year?
PeckhamRose replied to Big Tone's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
For those of you who really want to try and get hanging baskets at locations, the Southwark council Cleaner Greener Safer awards are currently up for grabs. Ask for a form from the website and, as they say, follow the links to Cleaner Green SAfer awards. I can't be arsed to do it for you, because here in Nunhead and Peckham Rye traffic light junctions there are loads of baskets and also flower/plant troughs along the railings! Luverly jubberly. -
mikese22 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Perhaps someone needs to look at this laterally - > as virtually everything the Post office ever did > is now available elsewhere. Err - what's the equivalent alternative to sending parcels off? Don't suggest DHL or FedEx or such companies, because the convenience of going to a Post office (ie one place) to post all my parcels off (not to mention the ebay ones) is greater than going somewhere in a different part of London to take said parcels via FedEx or DHL. Those companies won't come to me and why should I set up an account for a few parcels now and again?

Thinking of moving to Maxted Road
PeckhamRose replied to luca9853's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Welcome to the area Again! Is that area part of the nightmare one way system around the west side of Rye Lane? I'm always getting lost round there, as there is a paucity of appropriate signposts. But the houses look nice! -
The White Company would be nice?

Someone nicked it and took it to the Library? (Well, makes a change from the other way round!)

Even more annoying aircraft noise?!
PeckhamRose replied to Rosyprimrose's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I must have been drunk when I volunteered, but volunteer I did and today I went off to T5 as a trials volunteer. A fabulous building. Big glassy etc etc. They said they'd treat us as if we were regular passengers on a flight out. And the exercise today (there have been a lot of these trials days) was to work out what happens when the computers go down and we all have to be herded about without computers but with the staff (cough splutter) writing things down, like our boarding passes for example. And sure enough, we were indeed herded. No-one explaining the delay on the tannoy system. Out "flight" (and indeed we did get to go on a plane and then off again!) was over an hour late with no explanation. We had far too small a space on our feedback forms for feedback so we all wrote where we could on the forms to say what we thought. An interesting experience. Remind me not to do it again! I'm sticking with Virgin; BA will be the ones using T5 mostly. I know this is not quite the topic in hand. I can't make up my mind about 3rd runway. If we all didn't want to fly, there'd be no need. Just like, if we didn't buy the Sun it wouldn't be published. If we didn't watch crap TV they wouldn't make it. etc etc. Too tired to make any more coherent points! Ohhhhhhhh and JUSt like the real thing, the air conditioning and herding made me sneeze. Why on earth did I volunteer? Just a goodie bag handed to us, an electric adaptor for Europe/UK/USA and a cheap plastic wallet and a name tag holder. Seriously. -

Do You Know Anyone Who Has Been Mugged Recently?
PeckhamRose replied to gerry's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There is more to crime than being mugged by crackheads. Crime is also a company paying an accountant two thousand pounds to make sure they get out of paying, say, three thousand pounds worth of tax. Doesn't hurt as much though. Just thought I'd throw that in. gerry Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I agree Sean. Just had to go down Rye Lane and then up Lordship Lane. Saw two sets of two Community Wardens doing their thing up both Lanes. Now stop whinging about what you think they should be doing on HERE, where they can't defend themselves whilst they're out there, and get out and see them and talk to them and tell them what you would like to see them doing. Phone numbers are around somewhere including Southwark's website, where you can contact them and tell them and/or their managers where the trouble spots are. Just doing my best here! -

But I DID state the date just in case... I am glad it sparked debate though. I did not get around to seeing the film when it came out and was sad to see not many people in the cinema last night despite the director Chris Atkins' presence for Q&A after, either. He was nominated for a BAFTA by the way though did not win it. Incidentally, my role was edited so I remain on the cutting room floor....! But a prestigious cutting room I think. I'm not surprised at all, my role was distasteful though funny. After all the discussion about Churchill I was at the Parliament Square mass / lone demonstration playing a spiritualist medium and was filmed at the base of Churchill's statue improvising my socks off, saying I was hearing him saying how appalled he was that Blair had done what he had done - and then I said, "And I think I'm getting Airey Neave too - well, bits of him". The film was indeed shocking, and sadly has not got USA distribution which is truly sad. I am sure it would get a lot of interest.

Just been down Nunhead post Office. Manager said it's a done deal. He'll be gone in a few month. It's not for discussion. :((

Do You Know Anyone Who Has Been Mugged Recently?
PeckhamRose replied to gerry's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Lived in the same flat in Peckham Rye 25 years this August. I'm female. Never been mugged or had the flat broken into. Know no-one who has been mugged but sometimes when walking across the park get asked by a kid or two kids if they can walk with me so as to be protected from bullies. Refuse to be ruled by fear but I do try and take responsibility and walk confidently and be aware of surroundings and so on.
