  1. Hi, a smallish orange, black and white tortoiseshell cat (I'd call her calico but I think that's an American term) has been hanging out in my garden for the last 24 hours. She's very chatty and friendly and looks young, maybe a year or just under, and doesn't seem like a stray. Is anyone missing a little cat like this? Please let me know, thanks!
  2. Hi I'm taking a tour of this nursery tomorrow as I'm considering it for my little boy. Does anyone have any more current feedback? It would be great to hear from people who've actually used the nursery
  3. Tarafitness, I don't know if there are memberships that include both Brockwell and Dulwich since they're in different buroughs. We certainly didn't get any sort of discount when we used the pool last summer with our southwark based memberships. probably worth checking before you decide where to set up your membership
  4. Hi I've only just discovered this thread, but am due May 12th and have a fairly low priority question about the birthing rooms at Kings so thought I would bother those with recent experience there rather than calling the hospital. I know they have stereos in the rooms but can you plug iPods into them? And most importantly, congrats on all the recent new arrivals, hope you're all settling in at home happily and comfortably
  5. About a year ago I saw a woma hit her child repeatedly at Nigel Road bus stop. I didn't say anything because I was worried about agitating her further and causing more trouble for the boy later (it might be seen as his fault for acting out and therefore attracting attention, etc. Not that I agree with this, but when people are acting irrationally, they don't always blame the right person, you know?). Anyhow, afterwards I contacted a friend who used to be a social worker and asked what she suggested. She didn't have a solid answer, but she suggested asking the parent if he\she needed a hand, or if you could do anything to help them out. Don't draw attention to the abuse but acknowledge that they are under stress and maybe deflect the attention away from the child in a nonconfrontational way. My friend was clear that this is not a foolproof plan (I don't think there is one in this sort of situation) but she thought it was better than straight on confrontation and disapproval.
  6. I noticed this morning as I was walking by the entrance on Colyton road that someone had made a new gap in the fence next to the gate there that most people ought to be able to squeeze through. I too would love to see it opened a bit earlier. It would be nice if the opening times could change throughout the season just as the closing times do. No need for them to open at dawn but maybe at 7 after Daylight Savings kicks in which is when people have to start their commute or generally begin walking their dogs
  7. the eritrean/ethiopian place on coldharbour lane near the dogstar is very good, and fun as well
  8. when my husband and I were looking to have a chair reupholstered he was pretty pleasant and came out to our flat to check out the chair in question. Even when it was apparent it was not salvage-able. Month later we were looking for fabric to recover some chair seats and he was all right, if a bit scattered. I have friends who he's been miserable to when they were shopping for small items or asking for things he doesn't carry. He isn't an easy person to do business with and I can easily see how he would rub some the wrong way, especially if he's in a mood
  9. as a woman who walks through peckham rye park quite often i'd like to thank daizie for reporting this to the police. sometimes the actual reporting can be just as daunting as the incident in question. I'll also be sure to keep an eye out for anything suspicious going on. one of the best pieces of advice i ever received was to shout "Fire" (although obviously not in a crowded theatre or anything) instead of rape or help as a shout of fire is much likely to attract gawkers and help frighten off your attacker.
  10. we went in last weekend and were disappointed the food took ages to come out even though the cafe was not busy at all and when it arrived (with 10 minutes between the 2 dishes) both were lukewarm. While paying my husband mentioned this to the staff and was met with blank stares and shrugs. it's really sad as we were excited at the prospect of a vegetarian cafe. Hopefully it was just growing pains but we probably won't be back until we hear better reviews from friends.
  11. the Toad's Mouth in Brockley is really good too. they have tasty options of both the vegetarian and omnivore variety plus a sun room and garden out back(both surprising since the main dining room is in the basement) and really nice coffee and a ton of different teas
  12. My young man goes to the barber on Barry Road near the Clockhouse and he is always offered beer, tea or coffee whilst they trim his hair. Also he claims it is very reasonably priced.
  13. Amaretto Sours (shudder) and Tequila Sunrises (double shudder)
