If you're posting on the EDF its a sure sign you're..
PeckhamRose replied to wee quinnie's topic in The Lounge
I'm on here because I am suposed to be a writer which means the house is clean, the washing's done, the projects are coming along nicely, the shopping's done bills paid and everything's sorted, and I still need diversionary tactics! -
1) I'd like to have gone back to two days ago when I would have dialled 999 when I suspected the English sounding voice coming from my upstairs neighbours were not my neighbours who are actually Eastern Europeans. I would also have waited for him, the burglar there at the time, to come out. Then the police would have possibly caught him. 2) I'd like to go forward to get the lottery numbers but hey - that's silly. Then given heaps of money to my neighbours who had everything taken. 3) I'd like to go back and done something to prevent Tony Blair getting in power despite the joy in 1997 when he did so. Everything's gone wrong with spin and target league table culture. So may have had to have done something there. 4) I'd see myself a year before I die. If I am ill, I'll know to kill myself to prevent the year's agony for those who love me. If I am not ill I will suspect I should possibly die all of a sudden, so I shall carry on trying to enjoy life. Of course, today may BE a year before I die. Heyyy, who started this topic. I'll get me coat...

Break-ins & burgularys: East Dulwich Road area
PeckhamRose replied to flong's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi all Just had a meeting with Sanjay Rai a policeman who came round to discuss the burglary above. Any information about any burglaries should go to the Burglary Squad at Peckham Police Station. 020 7232 7212. Meanwhile, I have information that under political pressure a whole load of burglars were released from prison at the same time recently, and went out and burgled the area all in one go. That's politics. Finally, and this is not widely publiciced and I heard this from the grapevine, but there is political pressure to dispose of the very useful services of the Crime Prevention Officers. If you want their free advice call STEVE MORRIS for advice on Crime Prevention. He will arrange to come round your home and discuss possible weak spots etc. I do not have his number but if you call 020 73781212 or your local police station in Dulwich, you can ask for him. The more his services are used the better it will be for all. Get to know your neighbours, write on a sheet of paper your addresses and names and phone numbers of you and your neighbours and then photocopy and distribute it to your neighbours so if anything looks suspicious you can call one another up and ask about it. We only have one another. The political pressure on the police force is such that we can not rely on them because their services are in disarray and their political masters (incl New Labour affiliated Ian Blair) are not helping things. It is like the education system and NHS. Top down target ridden league table culture. Happy Christmas! -
Break-ins & burgularys: East Dulwich Road area
PeckhamRose replied to flong's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I live in a block of flats on the SE15 side of Peckham Rye. The block is 5 storeys high ie. ground plus four above. Access is via a communal stairwell accessible from the carpark. At the top floor of the stairwell is a ladder which starts about 6 foot off the ground, as it were, and so thieves got up that ladder, smashed the trapdoor and crawled into the roof / loft. They crawled to the space above my upstairs neighbours flat and made a hole into his living room ceiling. I heard the crashing and assumed something had fallen so I knocked on his door. After a while I asked if he was alright and heard someone say "Yes, something fell off the cabinet." I went downstairs and thought no more of it. I now feel absolutely awful. The voice was an English accent and my neighbours are Eastern European. They came home a few hours later to devastation. They called the police. I called the police. The police DID NOT COME. I do not know if they have come even today (though they said they would). The Scene of Crime Officers were also due to come today. I feel awful I should have called the police at the time. But would they have come? Lesson: We are on our own. We can NOT rely on the police. Sniff... -
I treated myself to a 99p chocolate croissant in Ayres in Nunhead the other day. On the way home I found a one pound coin. Just thought I'd say.

Answer Mark's question, AllForNun. We all only have each other. I always try and do my shopping in Nunhead and I always try and attend CCs and encourage others to do so. If more people did, things would have to improve because as a community we would not let our elected leaders rest until they did. But at the moment in society the whingers and whiners are winning, and whining. I think it has something to do with not enough people suffering enough together. Revolutions happen when enough people suffer enough together and are united in the suffering. Basically, we get the leaders and the society we deserve. Well if you close off the traffic in LordshipLane except to the hundreds of busses, bicycles and motorcycles obviously, then you could put a roof over road the and turn it into a bit like Wood Green - been up there recently? And then Tescos could buy the space over the roof and build a massive store in the Sky. Yeah. I quite like it as it is, the fact there are so few chain shops makes it so good.

But your point about whining to THIS forum would be??? Aim your whining at those that can do something. This is East Dulwich Forum. I agree the Community Councils are toothless, and my recent application to be a member of the Standards Committee of the council refers to that point as a reason why I want to try and make things better in that area. I have forwarded this link to Cllr Robert Smeath. I have no problems with people in the cafe with their dogs on leashes with them. I believe there is a health and safety issue which is (dogs') bollox since guide dogs are well behaved dogs, too, but have all the same equipment. Considering the issue I am now actively going to be sensitive to any lone dog owners who look like they're wanting some attention and offer to get their coffees or whatever for them. I am not a dog owner, but I love dogs and by far most dog owners are very caring of their dogs. woodie Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > No one wants the dogs inside except dog > owners.betya.

See, as a writer and performer I am absolutely against the idea of censorship. As a consumer I am also absolutely against the idea of censorship. I want to read and have the right to read, and see, what people have to say about the world and society. The idea of one person telling another what they can say and do and write and published and be like is absolutely abhorant. What we/society need to do and should strive towards, is to be so well educated and civil and kind and accepting of differences whilst celebrating our similarities, that people who MAY want to cause offence will realise there is no NEED to, because - simply put - they don't have anyone they want to offend because everyone's so damn nice and reasonable and accepting of them and each other. Those who censor others are like those who bully bullies, or kill killers. They're as bad and corrupting as those they wish to censor or punish. See that pig floating above Battersea Power Station the other night?

I had a play of mine put on in North London. None of you lot came, which I thought was a shame as you may have enjoyed it, but lots of people did and it got great reviews. It stressed me out greatly, was a huge nightmare (getting our leading man four days before opening night), but it was a huge personal achievement. Also I got paid Equity Minimum not to work with Johnny Depp. No, seriously. But I only relate that true story when I am well drunk because it is also the worst thing that happened to me. So that's the best things combined with one of the worst things that happened to me.

The ENglish band XTC did a fab song called DEAR GOD. That was banned in Bible belt and made them stars in America. About 1987. I appeared in the video too! Listen, America's full of idiots. It's their education system and appalling moneydriven politicians both sponsored by big business and advertising and the mind virus called Religion sponsored by the very same big business that's causing it. Everyone go over there, be nice, and spread the word from within that they need not be like this. :) (Runs away from the flames.) My relatives are American and I go there regularly and strangers come up to me in the street and shops upon hearing my accent and even when I refuse their religious cards, they are ACHING to know about what UK thinks about them and ACHIN|G to tell me they did not vote Bush in and the war is wrong. Honest!

Which shops? I shop there regularly. I believe a new cafe has applied to open next to the lovely AJ FLowers. I go to most of the shops there quite regularly and know the people to talk to. And if you are SO whingy about it, why bang on to councillors in HERE where they are not reading it, and come along to the Community COuncil meeting TONIGHT Wed 19th December and say something out loud and sensible where they can hear you? The latest issue of Nunhead Voice talked about the money earmarked for the area too.
-
Well you lot are just insensitive bastards. This is such a sad story. I am so sorry to read it. I do not know why so much money was charged. When our cat was dying we called in Mr Lomax (that place has "gone to the dogs" since he retired, for sure) who charged us just ?50 to come round to our flat and put my cat to sleep in my arms. I absolutely can not understand why these vets can get away with charging so much money. My heart goes out to you and specially your daughter.

Relax. Don't do it.

My first visit to LL (in decades)
PeckhamRose replied to Maurice's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Dickens drank every bloody where! Pubs from S E London all the way down to Broadstairs and beyond reckon "Dickens drank here". Also, Crown and Greyhound were two separate pubs but the landlord of one bought the other and shut one down and combined the two names to one pub. At least, that's what the expert on Robert Elms show said. -
It is bloody expensive to have Sky Sports in a pub so if they're gonna show it they would want to attract as many customers as possible in order to justify the cost. Or... they're stealing it somehow. (And if they are they'll get caught and prosecuted, if anyone reads The Publican now and again they'll know this.) Another reason I love The Clock House ( - sorry "TCH" to remain in keeping with the trend for tiresome TLAs, or should that be TTLAs) is that they don't have a telly and the music is rarely loud enough to interrupt a conversation and the music is my kinda music too, and - well as well as the great food, Laurence is a bit of a dish int' he. AND it's across the park. If I want to watch footie in a pub I'd go to one I knew was legally paying for it and made an effort to accommodate all its customers. Some "football" pubs are right dives. But this is East Dulwich, we don't tolerate dives, do we!

I see loads of strange things after a vegetarian liquid evening meal.... Sorry, don't believe it.

Christmas cards - to send or not to send?
PeckhamRose replied to ChavWivaLawDegree's topic in The Lounge
Shhhhh ta (re. the M chappie)! Like you, I also buy presents for people when I see something I KNOW they'd really like right NOW, rather than give it because it's Christmas.
