  1. New improved co-op much better - better range, bread baked on premises (I think). Never noticed the strange smell... Never really was bothered by inability of staff to communicate, fresh veg is better from the Turkish Supermarket 100 yards up the road, still cramped, but I'm hardly doing a big shop in there..... Does what it says on the tin... Expect to be co-operative when there is more than one of you in the aisle.
  2. What is happening with the Adventure Playground in Peckham Rye Park - the building work seems to have stalled for months without much progress... A friend and ex-colleague as the project Architect but she went off to have a baby... Does any one know.....?
  3. I drove past the newly erected sign and thought that we'd just got a new Youth Hostel Association such was the passing resemblance of the logo. Still It's great to welcome another meat-market bar, never know when my wife will walk out.... Not my thing but good luck all the same....
  4. A few points. I think that the staff in LL post office are very friendly and helpful, likewise Forest Hill Rd and top of LL. It's a great shame that smaller post offices are closing. But this is inevitable, times change there is not much you can do about it, scream shout protest etc... it's still going to happen. It's a business and if it's not making money then it needs to reform. I try and limit my use of the post office for all of the reasons that everyone is moaning about. This is done by using the online alternatives - the PO website offers a lot- if you are using this forum then you are computer literate enough to use the online postage system for example. Car tax - do it online - you don't need to show your MOT or insurance - it's all checked online automatically. I admit it doesn't suit everyone, but if you can do it online you'll help reduce the queues so those who want to queue can. There are choices - use them if you can.
  5. My Au Pair lost a set recently. On it was a metal freepost tag - there was 3 keys a yale type front door key, a smallers yale type key and a small key. Does this match the set you found?
  6. Geographically Speaking.... Two possibilities 1. Google Maps, Put SE22 into google maps search box I think it's about number 176 ish Barry Road - at the rear of the house, it's inside not quite in the garden. 2. Using the SE22 map as supplied by Huguenot above Taking the 4 corners - and plotting the centre brings you close to Google - at that point it's on the approach road up to St. Peter's and St. Clements off Barry Road - very close to where Google puts it. Conclusion The Geographical Heart is either Barry or God
  7. Arguably, that's Iceland or Budgens as well..... Pierre Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I'd say somewhere around the junction of Lordship > Lane / Northcross Road. Probably the Palmerston > then... > > > : P
  8. Melbourne Grove, London, SE22 Asking Price ?500,000 An unmodernised four bedroom terraced house in the heart of East Dulwich. Or perhaps it's at the The Butchers on Lordship lane....
  9. The branding on the windows of the new development opposite the Railway Station say it's there. But I really don't think it is the pumping heart of East Dulwich. perhaps it's a pub or Somerfield or even Foxtons. So where do you think is it? Discuss.....
  10. There is a sort of works place behind harris g.s and the Aquarius Golf club - there is a huge yellow structure there and I can see it from the back of my house. What is it? The attached image is the area....
  11. What a great story and thanks to lozzyloz for raising this. In an increasingly secular world we wonder where our children's values will come from and be guided by. I think we all hope that it will be based on decency, doing the right thing and be treated others how we would want to be treated by them. 10 years ago my tutor at University stood for the Natural Law Party, we all sniggered at his yogic flying and meditation sessions. But he was a credible and intelligent man. He explained the basis of the idea is simply to pass on good vibes- it spreads to others. A happier place is a safer, more productive, better place. It's easy. Listening to "Thought for the day" on Radio 4 last week was about this too. The speaker said that giving a receiving is the best thing we can do. So on a small scale the least we can do is give and receive a smile, say thank you or hello. It costs nothing, it takes no time. Pass it on - I wonder what would happen if everyone reading this does it.......
  12. Too many times the forum is used for a good old moan. So I'd just like to ask you to say something nice about something in East Dulwich, can be anything but the rule is that that you are not allowed to p1ss on anyone's bonfire just say what you are bigging up and why. Could be a business, person, Foxtons, BBC. I don't care as long as it's positive. To start off... I'd like to big up the Turkish Supermarket on Forest Hill Rd - just because they do heaps of things, good veg and i like the guys that run it. More than just a convenience store.
  13. Well... I have a friend who swears by them ( not at them) - they had a small 2 bed flat and they did wonders. When we were looking ( for a big house in ED) they were rubbish sending us inappropriate properties that clearly were nothing like brief we gave them. So it's horses for courses. There are plenty of agents in Dulwich, generally speaking each are good at doing certain things, so if you are looking for an agent do your homework and pick the best one suited to your property type. And go in and meet the staff - they will all be responsible for selling your home ( or dealing with matters) check that you are happy with the whole package not just the salesman who walks through the door.

  15. To me GBK is good but not quite the cigar. Now the best burger that I have had in ED was at Inside 72 which we used to frequent 5 yrs ago BC (Before Children). That was a really good burger - served with a pint of draught beer (good draught beer at that) and no children to be heard or seen. It the ultimate combo. Does anyone know if they still do their burger? and if it's any good? The best thing about GBK is the milkshake. Just don't drink one before you Burger arrives.....
  16. I agree about the Barclays issue. The Woolwich was great - sort of a bit like stepping back to the 1980's but great never the less. Since our childrens' accounts were moved over the road we haven't been in once. I'd just like to move the kids accounts somewhere else now... can anyone recommend an account somewhere that's gives reasonable rates and is geared up towards kids? On the subject of Internet and Telephone Banking I can wholeheartedly recommend First Direct who have been great since I switched to them about 4 years ago. Their telephone staff are all UK based and their online banking is also good. You can pay in a cheque at the HSBC or I tend to pay in cheques by post. Best of all I have noticed that they give you ?100 if you start up an account. The are confident that you will stay but if you aren't happy after 12 months and you want to leave then they will help you move to another bank and give you another ?100.....It was my 70 year old mother in law who recommended them to me. She doesn't use the internet banking and frankly if she can do it anyone can..... I also know that the CO-OP (Smile) are supposed to be good I know that the rise of the internet has been a factor into the decline of high street banking but I suggest kicking Barclays into touch and welcoming someone else on board. If Barclays are forced out perhaps we can have another Foxtons to balance out Lordship Lane - that would make my year.... (not)
  17. In East Dulwich in 2008 I would like to see... 2 Suggestions 1. I would love to see a decent Wood-fired pizza place. A great family owned place ( of course- what else?) or failing that something like Firezza (who are now in Herne Hill (but takewaway only). EDT Pizza isn't good enough, The Mag is good but wood fired would be the best. 2. For me to come back from work one night, bike up lordship lane and not seeing Foxtons realising that it had just been a bad dream ( Bobby Ewing Style) and the 50 million trees that went into the letters the I received from them still growing & sucking up CO2.
  18. Have a look at the TFL website journey planner. I used that to work out a route from ED to Notting Hill. It's absolutely brilliant see: http://www.journeyplanner.org/user/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en&itOptionsActive=1&cyclingActive=on&cycleType=107 copy and paste the full address if the link doesn't work - or go to the TFL website and follow the links there, cyling > journey planner etc. Good luck
