Dear Lord, some of the attitudes on this thread are pretty jurassic. Just for your info KalamityKel, it is not pathetic or neo feminist or stirring up trouble to object to the opening post of this thread, whatever op's motivation (or excuse) for posting it. Isn't it all a bit Carry On? I thought we'd moved on since then.
  2. Yes, I mean lose the chance to play much of a part in their lives.
  3. To my knowledge I only know of one member of my family who voted leave. I've never liked 'er and keep contact to the bare minimum anyway. It is very likely to backfire on her because her daughter needs to be able to work freely in the EU; she and her partner are self employed and have worked all over Europe for more than 10 years. Last year they decided to change jobs, settle down and live in the UK to start a family, whilst feeling confident that they could find work all over Europe in the future whenever they needed to. But now, this woman's daughter is planning to marry her Dutch/Australian partner and move to Australia and start her family there. My relative will more or less lose her daughter and future grandchildren. Stupid woman. I find it very difficult to forgive the Brexiters, I have to say.
  4. "well healed" Jay Rayner? As this thread has been bumped up today, how did the meetings go OP?
  5. Uncleglen, how can you possibly know that the op has chosen to pay school fees instead of foreign travel, expensive cars or a second home? Do you know something that the rest of us don't? (excuse thread derail but that just seems SO bizarre).
  6. Just watched the whole programme - fascinating.
  7. I know someone whose elderly father, who has a recurrent c-dif infection which keeps landing him back in hospital, is going to have one of these transplants. The donor had to be a close family member ... not sure why. But, anyway, it's not all about vanity, this is an attempt to save an old man's life.
  8. That is an amazing picture. When my son was a very young baby, he was sitting on the kitchen floor one day while I was getting his older sister into the high chair for her breakfast, when I noticed him picking something up from the kitchen floor and, as all babies do, making immediate moves to put it in his mouth. I thought I'd better just check what it was ... glad I did, it was one of these monsters with all its nippy limbs waving. Have rarely moved so fast!
  9. It's not all that helpful for the average family thinking about school choices when these furthest distance offered figures include Looked After children and siblings.
  10. Some children at local primary schools are not local - the prioritising of siblings in the admissions process sees to that.
  11. The Family Room is made for this sort of thread.
  12. I think I'll be a little bit sorry to see Londis (or 7:11 as I insist) go. Was having a conversation with husband the other day about what business was in the Jolie A Pied shop before. We racked our poor old brains. I'll have to search out that thread about the changing face of LL.
  13. I feel its a gamble that most of us just aren't qualified for. We flushed away more than ?20,000 on that 5 year fix (gnashes teeth). The 1.44% offer is from existing lender with no fees, think we're going to cautiously go for that. Thanks.
  14. Not even for two years at 1.44% Jeremy?
  15. Oh sorry meant to put this in the Lounge.
  16. Or perhaps it is. How would I know? As someone who opted for a 5 year fix at 5% just before interest rates plummeted, I fear I'm not the best person to judge! What are the financially savvy EDF bods doing for mortgages at the moment?
  17. Hi, want to buy some Converse for one of my children but a bit reluctant to schlep as far as Bromley. Is there a place nearer with a good selection of sizes and colours? This is not for a little child, btw, so need adult sizes. Thanks.
  18. Ah, ok. So what is your question again?
  19. Not too sure what your question is. Did you change your locks before or after the management agents lost their key? Perhaps the loss of the key hadn't come to light because there had been no need to use the key, and so it wasn't until it was actually needed that they realised it wasn't where it should be. If you see what I mean. Do you mean letting agents? or the management company for a block of flats (for eg.) ?
  20. Have you seen the threads in The Family Room about the severe lack of secondary school places?
  21. I ordered a replacement green bin online in the evening about a week ago. The form didn't give me the exact option I wanted (which was to have my large green bin taken away and replaced with the smaller one) but I submitted it anyway thinking I would call them the next day to clarify. But I didn't need to call - they sent me an email in the meantime, asking me to explain exactly what I wanted, so I just replied to that email. The bin was replaced this week, even though it was actually blue bin collection day for us. I was quite impressed!
  22. To answer your questions in order. Yes. The difference is amazing. It looks like a newly installed oven. Absolutely definitely for me. ?60.00 for about 2-3 hours dirty greasy work, seems more than reasonable! We always use Oven Sheen, very nice chap, based in West Norwood (I think).
  23. Would they be good enough for the Oxfam bookshop in Herne Hill? It's on the main drag, opposite where Just Williams used to be.
  24. Hi JB. I did look through the recent missing cats threads before starting this one and sadly our "stray" is definitely not yours. So sorry. I will of course take it to be scanned if this thread doesn't turn up any answers in the next few days.
