  1. Some children at local primary schools are not local - the prioritising of siblings in the admissions process sees to that.
  2. The Family Room is made for this sort of thread.
  3. I think I'll be a little bit sorry to see Londis (or 7:11 as I insist) go. Was having a conversation with husband the other day about what business was in the Jolie A Pied shop before. We racked our poor old brains. I'll have to search out that thread about the changing face of LL.
  4. I feel its a gamble that most of us just aren't qualified for. We flushed away more than ?20,000 on that 5 year fix (gnashes teeth). The 1.44% offer is from existing lender with no fees, think we're going to cautiously go for that. Thanks.
  5. Not even for two years at 1.44% Jeremy?
  6. Oh sorry meant to put this in the Lounge.
  7. Or perhaps it is. How would I know? As someone who opted for a 5 year fix at 5% just before interest rates plummeted, I fear I'm not the best person to judge! What are the financially savvy EDF bods doing for mortgages at the moment?
  8. Hi, want to buy some Converse for one of my children but a bit reluctant to schlep as far as Bromley. Is there a place nearer with a good selection of sizes and colours? This is not for a little child, btw, so need adult sizes. Thanks.
  9. Ah, ok. So what is your question again?
  10. Not too sure what your question is. Did you change your locks before or after the management agents lost their key? Perhaps the loss of the key hadn't come to light because there had been no need to use the key, and so it wasn't until it was actually needed that they realised it wasn't where it should be. If you see what I mean. Do you mean letting agents? or the management company for a block of flats (for eg.) ?
  11. Have you seen the threads in The Family Room about the severe lack of secondary school places?
  12. I ordered a replacement green bin online in the evening about a week ago. The form didn't give me the exact option I wanted (which was to have my large green bin taken away and replaced with the smaller one) but I submitted it anyway thinking I would call them the next day to clarify. But I didn't need to call - they sent me an email in the meantime, asking me to explain exactly what I wanted, so I just replied to that email. The bin was replaced this week, even though it was actually blue bin collection day for us. I was quite impressed!
  13. To answer your questions in order. Yes. The difference is amazing. It looks like a newly installed oven. Absolutely definitely for me. ?60.00 for about 2-3 hours dirty greasy work, seems more than reasonable! We always use Oven Sheen, very nice chap, based in West Norwood (I think).
  14. Would they be good enough for the Oxfam bookshop in Herne Hill? It's on the main drag, opposite where Just Williams used to be.
  15. Hi JB. I did look through the recent missing cats threads before starting this one and sadly our "stray" is definitely not yours. So sorry. I will of course take it to be scanned if this thread doesn't turn up any answers in the next few days.
  16. Hi, for about a week a thin black and white cat has been coming to our back door and taking my cat's leftovers from his dish. He/she always seems ravenously hungry but I do know that cats can be cheeky and visit other houses for food. Or is he missing and genuinely hungry? The cat is nearly all black. He has some white under his chin, white socks and his front right leg is grey. He has a small face and really wide staring bright green eyes. No collar. Seems pretty bold. We are towards the top end of Upland Road with gardens backing on to Friern Road.
  17. Agreed, Growlybear.
  18. For general cheeriness I find you can't beat The Barrytown Trilogy by Roddy Doyle.
  19. If you feel the need to complain about anything at this surgery, then do email the practice manager. I've had to do this (once in 20 years!) and received a prompt and courteous reply which made me feel that I was listened to and that my complaint was taken seriously.

    Bin woes

I hate the bins too! We returned our large brown bin and now use the small one for food waste, and we less than half-fill that each week. We compost most food waste (peelings, teabags etc) in the garden and use brown paper bags from the library a couple of times per year for larger garden prunings. As a family of 4 we completely fill the hideous blue bin every fortnight, but only half fill the green bin so am going to apply to swap to a smaller one of those. In roads where there are no front gardens or front gardens are inaccessible the bins are a total eyesore. I am convinced the vast majority of the large brown bins are empty most of the time. Yes, some of the freeholder restrictions on the beautiful terraces of Kensington and Chelsea might seem a bit draconian (no net curtains, no laundry on balconies, no Estate Agent signs) but the streets do look so much better for it!
  21. Yes, perhaps more families with both parents working full time these days? When my children were pre-schoolers (not centuries ago) they went to a childminder who took them to school nursery for their 2.5 hour sessions and back again. Great set up for us and a gentle introduction to Reception and "full time" school.
  22. Maths assessments at Kingsdale?
  23. I noticed that Heber Nursery had a thread seeking applications on this Forum. Are Nursery place requirements falling generally? (sorry if I'm repeating myself)
  24. It's interesting (and of course sad at the same time) that the Nursery has to close. I thought we were in the middle of a baby boom - or was that in the mid 2000s and is the birth rate falling again now? Will we have under utilised primary schools and secondary schools in the near future?
