In response to Angelina & Sue's queries, it's being reported with an appeal for witnesses in the Southwark News this week, but just as cautiously & with no new information. https://southwarknews.co.uk/area/peckham/police-appeal-after-reports-of-man-attacked-in-peckham-rye-park/?utm_source=mailpoet&utm_medium=email&utm_source_platform=mailpoet&utm_campaign=the-latest-news-from-southwarknewscouk-2

Peckham Rye reopened to traffic this afternoon - I saw the 'road closed' sign being removed at about 3 o'clock. I don't know whether the 63 and 363 buses have yet reverted to their normal routes.

Notice in a local shop

It's not just the buses which are not able to go down Peckham Rye. As the road's closed outside Harris Boys school, no vehicles are able to drive in either direction between Barry Road and Forest Hill Rd. There's a constant stream of traffic going straight on past the 'road closed' sign at the crossroads with Dunstan's & Colyton Rds and then doing three-point turns and coming back to the traffic lights again. Frustrated drivers are trying to find a way round, causing congestion/ driving too fast when they can, in the narrow local side streets.

Towards Therapia Road, the last bus stop served will be 'The Gardens' (WQ). Towards Kings Cross Station, the first bus stop served will be 'Peckham Rye / Barry Road' (WE). The timetable was posted on here in May by Iainj as "gas works gridlock this summer" https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/361036-gas-works-gridlock-this-summer/#elControls_1705588_menu Extract:- Phase two Our engineers will start work on 16 June for approximately ten weeks in East Dulwich Road between the junctions of Worlingham Road and Peckham Rye. We will need to install temporary multi-way lights for the duration of the work. Phase three From 28 July for approximately four weeks, we will be working in Lordship Lane, Spurling Road and Worlingham Road at their junctions with East Dulwich Road. Our work in Lordship Lane will take place from the junction with East Dulwich Road to the junction with Zenoria Street. Temporary multi-way lights will be installed for the duration of the work. The junction of Spurling Road and East Dulwich Road will be closed with a signed diversion in place. The junction of Worlingham Road and East Dulwich Road will also be closed with a signed diversion in place.

It seems the first phase of the roadworks have been completed - the bus stops at Nigel Road are now open in both directions. The bus stops are still closed at the crossroad with East Dulwich Road as the roadworks move down towards Lordship Lane.

Back to the topic of this thread. The vote for leadership of Southwark Council is being re-run today. Intriguing headlines in the Southwark News. (The full articles are only available online to subscribers.) :- Sarah King says she will contest James McAsh for council leadership in enforced vote re-run The Cabinet Member for Housing drew with McAsh in a closed door meeting of the Labour group on Monday by Issy Clarke. 4th July 2025 And Exclusive: Southwark Labour broke its own local party rules in leadership vote proxy debacle, and despite ‘issue being flagged’ before ballot date Fresh revelations raise further questions around why proxy voting was not raised as an issue until after McAsh had been declared the winner

I agree that I enjoy seeing the variety of wild flowers growing naturally in the streets and would much prefer that they were not destroyed. (The South London Botanical Institute actually conduct wildflower identification walks on street wild flowers.) However, as the council consider themselves to be responsible for removing these plants, it's better that they now dig them out rather than spraying them with toxic herbicide, as they used to do - a step in the right direction.

IainJ posted the details of these works with the timings of the three phases on 4th May on an earlier thread under the heading 'Gas works gridlock this summer'.

Road surfacing on Dog Kennel Hill and Grove Vale is now over, so buses are running again in the evenings.

The roadworks by the Harris Boys school have ended and the road has been open to traffic today.

This will affect anyone who expects to get a P13 going in either direction from DKH Sainsbury's after 8 tonight On Wednesday evening I had to walk to Goose Green with my shopping before I could get a bus. There had been no notice on the carpark bus stop so we had all been waiting there in vain.

Royal Mail Late Deliveries and the price we have to pay
kiera replied to a topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Royal Mail's parcel delivery service is not as good as most of the couriers' in my experience. Despite my redirection instructions, twice, and their acknowledgements, twice, they've delivered my online order regardless to the address (outside our area), with a confirmatory photo showing it prominently propped up against the front door, where it would still be if I hadn't made some frantic texts to a neighbour, luckily. -
GALA Festival 2024 Stakeholder Debrief
kiera replied to fishboy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Cyclemonkey - the event is not held in Peckham - it's in East Dulwich. Gala try to assert that their amplified music event in these fields in Peckham Rye Park are part of the Peckham music scene, whereas, in fact, these fields are in a quiet park in East Dulwich bounded by residential streets and much used by these residents for walking, family activities, picnics, ball games, sitting and reading and other non-intrusive leisure activities. Gala have previously held these de-briefing meetings in a venue close to the residents who are affected by the Gala event. Why can't they hold it in a building in the park rather than trying to push us out of our comfort zone into the Peckham clubbing and entertainment area. -
Work finished & temporary traffic lights removed. Bus stops back in use (despite still showing 'closed'.)
-
Temporary traffic lights at the Dunstan's Rd/Colyton Rd crossroad and the nearest bus stops each side closed. Buses still running ok but traffic queueing.

Reported by Southwark News today:- "Southwark’s Council Leader, Cllr Kieron Williams, has seen off an internal Labour challenge within his group – winning 28 votes to 23 from challenger Cllr James McAsh. Southwark News exclusively revealed the challenge earlier this month, coming from the Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency, Streets and Clean Air, McAsh. The vote was held today, Saturday March 23rd, at Southwark Labour’s Annual General Meeting. The close call of the vote means Cllr Williams now faces a tricky decision whether to keep Cllr McAsh in the fold, given his support, or remove him from the Cabinet."

I've received 3 emails today, all said to be from the leader of Southwark council. The first two were identical, headed "Seasons Greetings from the Leader of Southwark Council" wishing 'me' - i.e. just a general greeting to residents, I assume - a Happy Christmas & New Year and exhorting me to shop local. The third one was "Dyer, Lovern would like to recall the message, "Seasons Grettings from the Leader of Southwark Council". Nothing since - no explanation. It's a first for me - to be wished a Happy Christmas and then the greeting is taken back, but I won't take it personally!
