Yes, the East Dulwich Odeon became the Palace of Peace. 'BARA' says on another thread "I lived in Ondine Road at the time and everyone was fed up with the hoards of cars that came each week to listen to the Guru - this was around 1971/2" /forum/read.php?5,492794,507015#msg-507015 After that it became London House, home of the London Clock Co. - the company is still in existence

Jan15 - The St John's and St Clement's school building is still there but has been converted into residential accommodation, so its appearance has scarcely altered, except it now has plants and greenery all around the playground and buildings. The much loved (by school children) ice cream/sweet shop, Guiliano's, on the opposite corner, is now a Thai restaurant. There are fewer shops than there used to be, as some properties have been converted into housing, including the old police station on the corner of Upland and Crystal Palace Roads. The new police station in Lordship Lane which replaced it has been demolished and been replaced by a new primary school, so we no longer have a police station in East Dulwich. Nor do we see the mounted police or police horses which were a regular sight in the local streets and in Dulwich Park while the horses were stabled there.

I watched them emptying the food bins last week - they tipped them straight in with the garden waste in people's brown bins.

I'd like to point out that on Southwark Council's website they refer anyone who has a problem with foxes to the Fox Project - i.e. to use humane deterrents. It says "Please note foxes are not categorised as pests and are protected by the law. Contact The Fox Project for advice on how to deter foxes."
-
Not quite right - only female bees sting and they are the ones we are most likely to encounter. Male bees are unable to sting. I believe that applies to all our bee species - honey, bumble and solitary
-
No, it is not speculation that this fox has been killed - supersammyc has posted the photos of its dead body. A vet needs to examine the body to establish the cause of death. That vixens scream at mating time, which is in January, is not relevant - it's obvious from the photos that this fox has suffered. Supersammyc is trying to find help & doesn't deserve criticism. Supersammyc - have you been able to find help from the police or a wildlife/fox welfare organisation? Please post an update on here to let those of us who are concerned to know what has caused the death of this fox know the present situation and whether we can help in any way, especially as there are now probably cubs left without their mother.
-
Malumbu It could be fox cubs - they have only recently started to appear and they are very playful. Putting down water for foxes is a good idea, but may not deter them from wanting to drink from the pond, as a pond is a more natural water source. A garden pond is such a valuable wilife feature in a garden. Couldn't you make a place where creatures (including foxes?) can get to the water's edge to drink? Wouldn't a paving slab or plank of wood on top of the pond liner protect it from damage while enabling wildlife to get to the water's edge to have a drink, So much more wildlife friendly than spikes - and as for disinfectant - I hope you will not use disinfectant! The ingredients that make disinfectants effective in destroying bacteria and viruses make them toxic for animals - and for pondlife, which is especially sensitive to disinfectants.

The time reserved for elderly shoppers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays is 8-9am. Sainsbury's arrangement for the NHS is "NHS and social care workers will be able to shop in our supermarkets for half an hour before they open, from Monday to Saturday. Anyone with NHS ID will be able to shop from 07.30 to 08.00 on these days" I didn't see anything on Sainsbury's website to say that either the elderly/disabled/carers or the NHS staff had priority at any other times.

That's concerning. I wondered how Sainsbury's were enforcing their rationing of no more than three of any item per customer. I expected they would make their policy clear in the store, rather than take chilled/frozen items back at the till. What do they do with the meat they take from the customer? I was formerly told by a supervisor that any frozen or chilled products which customers discard at the tills can't be put back for sale because they have been out of the fridge or freezer for an unknown amount of time. Did the cashier call for a member of staff to take the meat and put it back straightaway? If not, it defeats the purpose of the rationing. However, Sainsbury's have today announced that they are relaxing their rationing from Sunday:- "Feeding the nation We have been working hard with our suppliers to improve our product availability. Most people are now just buying what they need for themselves and their families. This means we now often have stock on the shelves all day and at the end of the day. People have been queuing to get into our stores when they open in the mornings, but customers are now finding they can shop at any time of the day and feel confident in finding most of what they need. As stock continues to build, we have been reviewing whether we still need to limit the number of items people buy. I am pleased to tell you that we will start to remove limits from Sunday. Limits will remain in place on the most popular items which include UHT milk, pasta and tinned tomatoes. We have removed limits from Easter eggs immediately as we know families often want to buy more than three and we have plenty of these in all stores and online. From today, we are asking everyone to please only send one adult per household to our shops. This helps us keep people a safe distance apart and also helps to reduce queues to get into stores. Our store teams will be asking groups with more than one adult to choose one adult to shop and will ask other adults to wait. Children are of course welcome if they are not able to stay at home."

Sainsburys dedicated vulnerable customer line
kiera replied to IlonaM's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
IlonaM I remember reading that, in order to minimise risk during this crisis, Sainsbury's will not take back anything they've delivered, so I believe they have suspended their policy of taking back unwanted substitutes and giving refunds. -
Renata - could you please post a copy of the government directive to local authorities to close cemeteries. The only justification I have been referred to by a council officer relates only to crematoria, as has already been stated by others on here. I'd like to understand why the council has taken this step, as cemeteries are not even mentioned in the Regulations and it makes no sense to close cemeteries while leaving parks open.

Yes First Mate, anyone can comment on the planning application. You will be asked for your name and address and Southwark will probably give more weight to people who live nearby, but also, I would hope to people who use and value Greendale.

Yes - and they were then ripped up and thrown around on the grass - no appreciation or respect for nature or people.

I've always understood that, historically, the residents of Dulwich Village resisted the introduction of public transport into the Village & that that is why they only have one little single decker bus.

exdulwicher - thank you for your most useful contribution to the forum. I find your posts very informative, so, regardless of where you live, I hope that you will continue to take the trouble to share your knowledge on here.

It has always been understood locally that Dog Kennel Hill was so named because hunting dogs were housed on it. The side roads off Dog Kennel Hill have all been named after hunts e.g. Quorn Road.
