My understanding of the background is:- When Southwark sold the land they owned near the River, they justified not using it themselves to build housing, on the grounds that they could get a high price for their land in the North of the borough, so would use the proceeds to build their own new housing on land they already owned in the south of the borough, where the land has less value.

Bus stop outside Picture House - when will it return?
kiera replied to Reg Smeeton's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thank you James - I do hope you're right. It's my nearest bus stop on Lordship Lane but I have quite a long walk to get to it, without the additional walk to the Post Office when I get there. I can't see how it helps with social distancing to have us additional bus passengers waiting outside the busy post office. -
I'm surprised at how few people have supported the comments which are objecting to the removal of the buses from Rye Lane. (Objections are the red pins) https://peckhamstreetspace.commonplace.is/ Plenty of cyclists are saying how great it is now and that the closure should be made permanent (supporters = green pins)

Dulwich Society news-"LTN Interim communication & engagement officer: The Council has recently advertised for a staff member to promote the new LTN programme both externally to residents and internally to staff, ?to deliver an outward facing engagement programme to ensure that local people and stakeholders are informed, listened to and involved in the project.?"

Nigello Wrote: ---------------------------------- https://twitter.com/bermondseytrees/status/1377970 > 454183444480?s=21 - no more pollarding in > Southwark till Nov. Quoting the Twitter post:- Trees For Bermondsey @BermondseyTrees Good news: Southwark Tree Section have announced that routine re-pollarding is now suspended until Nov. "Crown reduction work will continue ... however this will be postponed until the end of the nesting season where nesting birds are present following a wildlife assessment" Good news about the pollarding, but not good that crown reductions are to continue during the nesting season. The wildlife assessment is likely to be simply the contractors standing looking at the tree to see if any nests are clearly visible, before starting up their chainsaws. Generally, birds choose hidden, well covered and protected places to nest and I have witnessed council tree pruning taking place in trees and shrubs where birds are nesting. I don't consider the council should be pruning trees at all during the nesting season.

Nigello Wrote: I saw a slim, almost elongated pigeon-sized bird, perched on TV aerials and screeching/squawking raspily and with a slightly fanned tail. What coukd it be? It?s not a jay or magpie or jackdaw/crow. I think I heard two of them. & --------------------------------- > It wasn't pigeon like in any way other than its size. I thought it was a corvid but they were too light in colour. Green woodpeckers are about the length of a pigeon but slimmer, with a slightly fanned tail and have a loud call, although I wouldn't say it was rasping. Their call is likened to laughing and is reproduced on the RSPB website https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/green-woodpecker/ Could that be the bird you saw?

Spartacus Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > This is a few months old but may help explain the issues faced by the sorting offices That letter from January explains that they are prioritising vaccination letters. Presumably the service can only cope as long as there's nothing extra at any time. So we won't have a normal delivery while they have to give priority to census letters and then we can expect they won't be able to cope with normal mail when they have to give priority to postal votes during the election etc.etc.. Allowing for poor service, I posted a birthday card last month, three and a half weeks in advance of a birthday in March, but it still didn't arrive until a week after the birthday. I would sum it up by saying the service they're able to provide is inadequate and unacceptable - regular delays are now their normal service. I might have a more tolerant attitude towards Royal Mail if I hadn't been experiencing their poor service since long before the pandemic - ever since our service transferred to Peckham Office - and if they were spending their ?500,000,000/?700,000,000 profit on expanding their premises and taking on more permanent staff instead of sharing it out among their shareholders.

Save Our Shed ( Do the right thing Southwark )

A studio perhaps? "Re: Looking for a piano teacher for 7 and 13 year old Posted by lousmith 13 January, 2020 11:17 Hi All. Yes Captured on the Rye is still trading. We have a purpose-built garden studio at my address in Barry Road where we are now hosting parties for up to 12 guests......." -
To add insult to injury, I saw this on the internet today. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/royal-mails-red-letter-day-after-home-deliveries-soar-kh2cnbv5q "Royal Mail?s red-letter day after home deliveries soar Royal Mail has seen its letters business grow despite earlier gloomy forecasts ROYAL MAIL Robert Lea, Industrial Editor Thursday March 11 2021, 12.01am, The Times Royal Mail is reaping a big pandemic dividend with the privatised national postal group revealing that it will make more than three times as much profit in the age of Covid than it did before. In an unscheduled trading update, it upgraded its profit forecasts for the second time in less than a month because of the continuing boom in home deliveries and a return to writing letters and sending mail. It expects to make ?700 million in operating profits in its financial year that closes at the end of the month. At its nine-month update in February Royal Mail unexpectedly pleased investors by saying it expected profits of more than ?500 million............." Perhaps Royal Mail's profits are soaring because the only way to ensure post reaches its destination is to pay the extra for track and trace

New recycling bin for electrical items
kiera replied to Nigello's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks Nigello for telling us about the new recycling bin for small electrical items in Dulwich Village. I looked at it yesterday & thought I should let others know that it's either full, or items which are too large have been forced into it. Either way, it's blocked at the moment. The bin has no facility for lightbulbs or batteries. -
Save Our Shed ( Do the right thing Southwark )

I've signed your petition and I encourage you to continue to challenge the council's decision. I have experienced distressing discretionary decisions from Southwark regarding my own garden, decisions which show no consideration for nature, wildlife or my way of life. I have appealed in the past, thereby taking them to court. I don't know what legal rights you have in your situation, but, despite the fact that they own the land, I'm sure the council are required to act reasonably, For your neighbour to complain about your shed, I assume it's causing him some problem - if so, can you do anything to reduce any nuisance it's causing? Can the council's decision be challenged - have you taken legal advice? Good luck. -
Opposite the Actress, in Upland Rd, next to the Old Police Station, there's a silver Renault with a Southwark Council notice on it saying it was moved from another road to that position by them. It's now been there for weeks and the notice has faded so you can no longer read the road it was removed from. Presumably the owner either doesn't know it's there, or doesn't want it.

It isn't obvious to me from that sign that you can drive down Eynella Rd - the timed restrictions surely don't apply to Court Lane. I remember the council were proposing to make Eynella Rd 'no entry' from the Barry Rd direction. This crossroads is much used by schoolchildren from St Anthony's and children using the children's library, so it seems to me that, regardless of Court Lane being a no through road ahead, it's where the sign has been placed that the timed restrictions apply. I quite agree that the sign is not clear, as no-one seems to know what it really means.

In my experience, some drivers are going much too fast in some LTN roads. I think they are finding their normal route blocked and are frustratedly and impatiently driving down unfamiliar streets trying to get out.

Some frogs hibernate in the mud in the bottom of a pond. A Butler sink is not deep enough to protect a frog from predators, so I wouldn't recommend removing all of the ice. However, frogs need to be able to breathe. There's usually a layer of air between the surface of the water and the ice, so, making an airhole in the ice will allow the air to circulate enabling a frog to survive when its home is frozen over.

The council emptied the brown bins in my road this week as usual, but left all the Christmas trees. Perhaps they don't have enough room in the vehicle to take so many in one week.

Goose Green councillors - how can we help?
kiera replied to jamesmcash's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As I recall, we were told that TFL wouldn't allow it because it's a bus route & a pedestrian crossing would delay the buses. -
Goose Green councillors - how can we help?

There are four other entrances to Sydenham Hill Woods and Dulwich Woods that I can think of, e.g.there's one on Sydenham Hill and one on Crescent Wood Rd Edited to say that, since posting this, the Cox's Walk thread has been updated, so there is better information on there, including a response from a councillor for the ward in which the woods are situated and a post from a London Wildlife Trust volunteer, so the situation is better explained on that thread. It seems no-one knows who padlocked the gates - that it was not any council contractors nor the London Wildlife Trust. The council have put in a new planning application to fell the trees. The application is still open for comments on the council's planning website. -
Unfortunately, complaints to the council about the displaced congestion on Underhill & other roads may be just the kind of response the council are hoping for so they can argue that the LTN area needs to be extended further into East Dulwich. They are also likely to use it as an excuse to say that Controlled Parking Zones should be extended into the area.
-
Yes, the P13 has been on its normal route in Underhill Rd all week - the roadworks were cleared last Sunday (as I reported at the time)
-
The blockage at Friern Rd has been removed, so Underhill Rd is now clear.
-
As I understand it, the bus gates will only assist the P4 when it goes through Dulwich Village. Are there going to be bus gates which will help the buses on the South Circular, Lordship Lane or, most importantly, East Dulwich Grove?
-
Forcing all traffic onto the bus routes is going back to the days before bus lanes were introduced, when buses were so delayed by all the other traffic, that no-one could rely on them e.g.to get to work on time. The buses have been ignored by the council in their LTNs, but they are essential in encouraging people to abandon their cars and use public transport.
