  1. As I recall, we were told that TFL wouldn't allow it because it's a bus route & a pedestrian crossing would delay the buses.
  2. There are four other entrances to Sydenham Hill Woods and Dulwich Woods that I can think of, e.g.there's one on Sydenham Hill and one on Crescent Wood Rd Edited to say that, since posting this, the Cox's Walk thread has been updated, so there is better information on there, including a response from a councillor for the ward in which the woods are situated and a post from a London Wildlife Trust volunteer, so the situation is better explained on that thread. It seems no-one knows who padlocked the gates - that it was not any council contractors nor the London Wildlife Trust. The council have put in a new planning application to fell the trees. The application is still open for comments on the council's planning website.
  3. Unfortunately, complaints to the council about the displaced congestion on Underhill & other roads may be just the kind of response the council are hoping for so they can argue that the LTN area needs to be extended further into East Dulwich. They are also likely to use it as an excuse to say that Controlled Parking Zones should be extended into the area.
  4. Yes, the P13 has been on its normal route in Underhill Rd all week - the roadworks were cleared last Sunday (as I reported at the time)
  5. The blockage at Friern Rd has been removed, so Underhill Rd is now clear.
  6. As I understand it, the bus gates will only assist the P4 when it goes through Dulwich Village. Are there going to be bus gates which will help the buses on the South Circular, Lordship Lane or, most importantly, East Dulwich Grove?
  7. Forcing all traffic onto the bus routes is going back to the days before bus lanes were introduced, when buses were so delayed by all the other traffic, that no-one could rely on them e.g.to get to work on time. The buses have been ignored by the council in their LTNs, but they are essential in encouraging people to abandon their cars and use public transport.
  8. We have our own rare Edward V111 pillar box at 38 Nunhead Green.
  9. Message from Margy Newens re South Circular closure:- As many of you will be aware, on Thursday afternoon a major water main burst beneath the South Circular just outside the more westerly entrance to Dulwich Park resulting in considerable damage to the highway and pavement and copious flooding. The road has been closed in both directions between Lordship Lane and College Road since the incident resulting in gridlock throughout the entire area. I have been advised that there is now a signposted diversion via Croxted Road, Norwood Road, Half Moon Lane, Village Way, East Dulwich Grove, Lordship Lane. Officially, we have been advised that the repairs will take at least until Sunday evening to complete. Meanwhile, I spoke to a Thames Water engineer on site this morning who indicated that the works could well extend into next week and that the extent of damage to the highway would mean that it is likely to remain closed to motor vehicles in both directions for the duration. Access to pedestrians and cycles will be maintained throughout. Please share this information with your networks.
  10. I'm wondering whether late packages will ever be delivered or whether they'll be returned to sender. An online company had posted an item to me on 26th August. When I eventually contacted the sender, they took lost post action because of the length of time it was taking to reach me, They replaced the item, which I had to ask them not to send by Royal Mail. I received the replacement the next day because I paid for it to be sent by courier. I've not received the original, which presumably should now not be delivered to me but should be returned to sender. Given how many undelivered packages they have, I wonder whether the delivery office will actually go to the extra trouble of sorting through them all to separate out the ones which need to be returned to sender.
  11. Yes,thank you. I had not been getting notifications from you, but they are now coming through.
  12. Yes, I remember there was something Mexican there. There was a restaurant there in the evening for a while - I think it was that - it certainly had a different menu to Johnnies. It probably wasn't run by the same people and it didn't seem to have any customers whenever I passed by, so I wasn't surprised it didn't survive.
  13. Very good news and thank you for letting us know that we no longer need to look out for him
  14. I agree with your good advice, Sally Eva, except for one point. We are talking about an elderly lady. If her PIP has been stopped, yes, she can appeal, but she would not be a eligible to reclaim PIP. For a fresh claim, a person has to be below state pension age.
  15. Yes, the East Dulwich Odeon became the Palace of Peace. 'BARA' says on another thread "I lived in Ondine Road at the time and everyone was fed up with the hoards of cars that came each week to listen to the Guru - this was around 1971/2" /forum/read.php?5,492794,507015#msg-507015 After that it became London House, home of the London Clock Co. - the company is still in existence
  16. Jan15 - The St John's and St Clement's school building is still there but has been converted into residential accommodation, so its appearance has scarcely altered, except it now has plants and greenery all around the playground and buildings. The much loved (by school children) ice cream/sweet shop, Guiliano's, on the opposite corner, is now a Thai restaurant. There are fewer shops than there used to be, as some properties have been converted into housing, including the old police station on the corner of Upland and Crystal Palace Roads. The new police station in Lordship Lane which replaced it has been demolished and been replaced by a new primary school, so we no longer have a police station in East Dulwich. Nor do we see the mounted police or police horses which were a regular sight in the local streets and in Dulwich Park while the horses were stabled there.

  18. I watched them emptying the food bins last week - they tipped them straight in with the garden waste in people's brown bins.
  19. There's a firm in Edinburgh making masks which have a transparent insert so that the wearer's lips can be read. They're expensive at ?15.99 https://www.breathe-easy.info/our-face-masks/lip-reading-face-masks/
  20. It's open on Sundays (only) unless there should be a Sunday funeral, which is unlikely
  21. That's really good news - thank you for letting us know. Presumably it was due to a microchip that you got him back?
  22. First mate Feel free to edit your post so that you're happy with it and I'll edit my posts accordingly.
  23. Deleted, as I was responding to someone else's post which has now been deleted.
  24. I'd like to point out that on Southwark Council's website they refer anyone who has a problem with foxes to the Fox Project - i.e. to use humane deterrents. It says "Please note foxes are not categorised as pests and are protected by the law. Contact The Fox Project for advice on how to deter foxes."
  25. Not quite right - only female bees sting and they are the ones we are most likely to encounter. Male bees are unable to sting. I believe that applies to all our bee species - honey, bumble and solitary
