  1. James. It was back in November that I raised the issue of the railings at the kerbside restricting the view of drivers exiting Whateley Rd. You arranged for the council to review the situation, to establish whether these railings are necessary or whether they are actually a hazard to road users. You said you were treating this as a road safety issue, that you were using cleaner greener safer funds and that you hoped the assessment would be conducted soon. What happened? Why don't the council treat it as urgent when it is an issue of road safety? My concern is primarily for cyclists in Lordship Lane, who may not be visible to cars pulling out of Whateley Rd. As it is, the driver's view is obstructed, not only by the railings, but by the various bins lined up against them, including Southwark Council recycling bins. You said that accidents are a known problem in this spot, so why are the council so apparently uncaring?
  2. The risk of losing these shops forever is very real. It would be increasingly difficult for the existing businesses to survive in the upper stretch of Forest Hill Rd, if the council were to allow vacant shops to be converted into residential properties. The latest shop to apply for permission was number 92 - the former TV repair shop. Thankfully, the planning dept have refused permission to convert it into a residential flat.
  3. It doesn't make any sense to me. How would a bank know that a fraudulent transaction was being attempted from the pub, unless someone was trying to buy something in there - hardly likely when the place is shut (and without physically having the card). Or had the person somehow obtained the card number from the pub's card machine and was trying to buy something by phone or on the internet, without knowing the address of the cardholder or the last 3 numbers on the back of the card. I don't get it. My guess is the phone call from "the bank",if genuine, was referring to bigtony2's actual use of the card in the pub, or, if not, a scam to obtain his card details from him.
  4. If the disturbance is still happening, and the address in Wood Vale is in Southwark, you can phone Southwark Council's noise team.on.0207525 5777 & they should investigate. They are available on Saturdays. If the address is in Lewisham, I don't know whether they offer a similar service, but you could check their website. I believe the council.has legal.power to take action in cases such as you describe.
  5. I'll be interested to know if you are able to sort it out this way, without having to go into.the branch again. Good.luck and do let us know how you get on.
  6. It sounds like the usual hassle you have to go through when.you don't have the exact foms of photo ID the banks (any banks) require.. It's very frustrating when you know you are the right person and can prove it, but they're not happy about accepting your documemts. I'm resigned to it and just produce all the ID I have When eventually it's accepted, I'm happy to set up a security number and password to enable me to deal with them.by phone.in future - like you, I won't be using it for internet banking.
  7. James, I'm surprised that the council.require payment to investigate a road safety issue, but thank you for the information and for your good work in dealing with this.
  8. James. I'm glad you agree about the kerbside railings and that you are already doing something about it - thank you. Would I be right in thinking that these railings on Lordship.Lane are the responsibility of Transport for London, as Lordship Lane is a bus route? Also, as two other drivers have now agreed with me that these railings obscure their view of the road, I consider that whichever authority is responsible should treat this as a road safety issue and therefore give it a higher priority than just removing redundant street furniture. I consider it's particularly dangerous for cyclists at this point on Lordship Lane, as, in my experience, a cyclist approaching from the right would not be visible to a motorist waiting in Whateley Road. I hope this junction can soon be made safer.
  9. James, As a motorist, I find I have very poor visibility on exiting Whateley Rd into Lordship Lane, because the kerbside railing obscures my view. I can't tell whether there's any car or cyclist coming from the right as I can't see the road behind the railing. I just. have to wait awhile to give anything which may be there time to pass, before moving forward. When TfL began removing railings everywhere, I didn't approve, as they were removing ones I thought were important for pedestrian safety. However, I was looking to the removal of these ones, as I consider them to be a hazard, but it seems they're here to stay. Could an officer from the Council's road safety department assess the need for these railings for pedestrian safety against the visual obstruction they are causing?
  10. flOwer - have you thought of starting a Friends of Camberwell Old Cemetery ? It seems that the woodland area is valuable for wildlife and is also much appreciated by local residents. Yet there is no wildlife-friendly 'Friends' group to negotiate with the council to try to protect this area or to seek sympathetic development if it's too late now for protection. It needs a few people to get together and get organised. Would you or anyone else be willing to take the lead to get a Friends group started ?
  11. Southwark's tree manager is giving a talk to the Peckham Society at the Goose Green Centre on 20th October at 3pm. The talk is entitled."The trees of Southwark" and you do not have to be a member of the Peckham Society to attend.

Any amount of water is likely to be attractive to.wildlife, but a pond for frogs should be a minimum of 18 inches deep, in order to give them adequate protection - to allow them room to escape from predators and to ensure they are well below the ice if it gets frozen over in winter. Other considerations would be that the material the pond is made of should have some flexibility, otherwise it would probably become cracked by ice in winter and then leak. Birds may go to it to drink, so would they be safe, or could cats hide behind plants nearby and pounce on them. If you have overhanging leaves, these may fall in the pond, in which case you would have to keep removing them to prevent them decaying and depleting the oxygen in the water. A pond can be a really interesting addition to a garden, but, unless it's set up with aeration and filters, it needs quite a lot of regular attention

The customer requests the service and you travel to the customer and clean their car. If the customers come to you, then it's not a mobile service.
  14. Renata, this thread relates to the drastic pruning of trees on the Underhill Road perimeter of the cemetery. They are mostly lime trees and they have been left stripped of all branches. This raises various issues, such as why this work was necessary, why it has been carried out during the bird nesting season, why the trees have been so harshly pruned and why local residents are completely left out of such decision making. As you requested an email or pm, I have also emailed you.
  15. flOwer - completely agree with your concerns, so am posting in support, but also to suggest you contact Renata Hamvas, as Camberwell Old Cemetery is in Peckham Rye Ward and she is the most active councillor in that ward. If you want to go and see her at one of her surgeries, I'm willing to go with you.
  16. Foxhelp, I'm pleased that you now know you have two sources of help and support should you ever need it - the local wildlife rescue service and this forum, but I would have expected The National Fox Welfare Society to also be able to help you. They have an emergency number on their website and volunteer rescuers throughout the country. I do think the advice you got from the RSPCA - to contact environmental health - was completely inappropriate and unhelpful.
  17. I hope you managed to catch the pigeon and keep it safe away from the cats (most cat baskets can be used as a temporary cage - with a cover over it, to keep the bird in the dark). It would be much better to take the pigeon to a wildlife rescue centre than to a vet, as, in my experience, vets will only destroy pigeons, not treat them. Pigeon Recovery (8 Vermont Road, Sutton) have hutches outside where you can safely leave a pigeon at any time of the day or night. Their phone number is 0208 644 7349.
  18. The best and most local wildlife rescue service I know is Willow Wildlife in Chislehurst. They cover our area, have an ambulance and will come and collect the wild animals. Their phone number is 07956 472 284 and their website is http://willowwildlife.co.uk
  19. Foxhelp, it is unfortunate that you waited until the cubs were dead to post again on the forum. The last advice you had been given, by Saffron, was very good advice, from the National Fox Welfare Society. Their advice was not to sit back and wait. They suggested getting in touch with them or your local wildlife rescue centre. Saffron also asked you to keep the forum updated. You obviously wanted to do the right thing, so it's very sad that you did not follow-up the very good advice you were given. If you didn't know how to contact The National Fox Welfare Society or a local WIldlife Rescue Centre, there's no doubt Forumites would have looked up the contact details for you.
  20. I agree with ED-NAG that this would not be a safe place to have a crossing. It isn't even safe for motorists who want to turn right - either turning right into Upland Road, risking cars running into the back of you, or moving into the middle of the road, facing the oncoming traffic to turn right into Court Lane. A motorist unfamiliar with the area would not be prepared for the many things to look out for on coming out of that bend. It's not a safe place to cross the road.
  21. Maybe the ants have set up their colony in your food waste bin - it might have seemed a safe place or maybe your waste food is something which is delicious to them, such as fruit. Either way, I would not like the ants to be destroyed. I would tip it out in the garden as compost . If you dont want to do that or don't have a garden, let me know - before the dustmen are due to collect!
  22. I'm not offended by the title of the thread - perhaps because I don't put on make-up on a bus! It's not a particularly pleasant title, but I don't consider you should feel pressured, (Dulwich 2020) into changing it.
  23. That we are so fortunate to have, not only the parks, but a number of other green open spaces in and close by East Dulwich, such as Camberwell Old Cemetery and One Tree Hill.

All the envelopes were soggy and frayed and had come apart along the bottom edge,so that they were very nearly open. Could that be what had happened to your post SebsC?
