Renata, this thread relates to the drastic pruning of trees on the Underhill Road perimeter of the cemetery. They are mostly lime trees and they have been left stripped of all branches. This raises various issues, such as why this work was necessary, why it has been carried out during the bird nesting season, why the trees have been so harshly pruned and why local residents are completely left out of such decision making. As you requested an email or pm, I have also emailed you.

flOwer - completely agree with your concerns, so am posting in support, but also to suggest you contact Renata Hamvas, as Camberwell Old Cemetery is in Peckham Rye Ward and she is the most active councillor in that ward. If you want to go and see her at one of her surgeries, I'm willing to go with you.

Foxhelp, I'm pleased that you now know you have two sources of help and support should you ever need it - the local wildlife rescue service and this forum, but I would have expected The National Fox Welfare Society to also be able to help you. They have an emergency number on their website and volunteer rescuers throughout the country. I do think the advice you got from the RSPCA - to contact environmental health - was completely inappropriate and unhelpful.

I hope you managed to catch the pigeon and keep it safe away from the cats (most cat baskets can be used as a temporary cage - with a cover over it, to keep the bird in the dark). It would be much better to take the pigeon to a wildlife rescue centre than to a vet, as, in my experience, vets will only destroy pigeons, not treat them. Pigeon Recovery (8 Vermont Road, Sutton) have hutches outside where you can safely leave a pigeon at any time of the day or night. Their phone number is 0208 644 7349.

The best and most local wildlife rescue service I know is Willow Wildlife in Chislehurst. They cover our area, have an ambulance and will come and collect the wild animals. Their phone number is 07956 472 284 and their website is http://willowwildlife.co.uk

Foxhelp, it is unfortunate that you waited until the cubs were dead to post again on the forum. The last advice you had been given, by Saffron, was very good advice, from the National Fox Welfare Society. Their advice was not to sit back and wait. They suggested getting in touch with them or your local wildlife rescue centre. Saffron also asked you to keep the forum updated. You obviously wanted to do the right thing, so it's very sad that you did not follow-up the very good advice you were given. If you didn't know how to contact The National Fox Welfare Society or a local WIldlife Rescue Centre, there's no doubt Forumites would have looked up the contact details for you.

Child hit by car (she's fine), Lordship lane with upland
kiera replied to lotita's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I agree with ED-NAG that this would not be a safe place to have a crossing. It isn't even safe for motorists who want to turn right - either turning right into Upland Road, risking cars running into the back of you, or moving into the middle of the road, facing the oncoming traffic to turn right into Court Lane. A motorist unfamiliar with the area would not be prepared for the many things to look out for on coming out of that bend. It's not a safe place to cross the road. -
Maybe the ants have set up their colony in your food waste bin - it might have seemed a safe place or maybe your waste food is something which is delicious to them, such as fruit. Either way, I would not like the ants to be destroyed. I would tip it out in the garden as compost . If you dont want to do that or don't have a garden, let me know - before the dustmen are due to collect!

I'm not offended by the title of the thread - perhaps because I don't put on make-up on a bus! It's not a particularly pleasant title, but I don't consider you should feel pressured, (Dulwich 2020) into changing it.

Reason to be Cheerful in East Dulwich
kiera replied to the-e-dealer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
That we are so fortunate to have, not only the parks, but a number of other green open spaces in and close by East Dulwich, such as Camberwell Old Cemetery and One Tree Hill. -

All the envelopes were soggy and frayed and had come apart along the bottom edge,so that they were very nearly open. Could that be what had happened to your post SebsC?

If a bird or a squirrel has fallen down the chimney, it will be impossible for it to climb back up, so, lighting a fire is NOT going to help - birds are very sensitive to smoke and quickly killed by it. If it's a victorian-style fireplace, they fall down to a ledge just above the fireplace. If you can open the cover into the flue (within the fireplace, above the fire) the trapped bird can fly out into the room. (you'll probably get brick dust falling down as well, which will need to be swept up) Then you'll need to open a window to let it fly out. It will be very scared.

I'm glad you said that the interactive map is inaccurate, Computed Shorty, because my mother and I had come to the same conclusion - that the bombs are all shown as having landed in the wrong places - some 15+ houses away from where they actually landed. I've previously looked at the map in the London Metropolitan Archives,on which this interactive map is said to be based, and it did not show the bombs as having fallen in these positions, and is undoubtedly more accurate.

I'd like to be able to speak to the staff I'd like to speak to when phoning the council, instead of having to speak to call centre staff who can't do much more than take a message. i'd like the trees to be lightly pruned only as often as necessary, rather than drastically massacred once every three years. New tree plantings, not just replacements. i'd like to see park keepers back in the parks in sufficient number to not be afraid to challenge bad behaviour, keep order, and encourage respect for the plants, wildlife and park users- so people with small dogs aren't afraid to go in the parks and children can feed a squirrel without risking a dog rushing up and ripping it apart. I'd like to go back to the elderly not being fined for overdue books in the libraries - a particularly mean way for the council to have raised money, at the same time as they got rid of the mobile library. Keeping records of dead pets found on the road, scanning them for microchips and notifying owners. That will do for now - also agree with many previous suggestions - youth activities, improved out-of-hours services and dropped kerbs on every corner. Is the council going to see your completed work?

I agree with edcam. When buying a newspaper, or anything else for that matter, I wouldn't ask personal questions of the person who is selling it. I don't know why you, TopTree, think it's o.k. to be rude to a Big Issue vendor, before buying a paper from him. In any case, I don't see the point of your questions - if he/she says they are getting housing benefit, will you think you've caught them out - that they're not really homeless? Not so,they may well be living in a hostel for the homeless, paying rent. Or did you just want to point out to them that they are being subsidised by taxpayers? Or are you vetting them to confirm they are genuine Big Issue vendors, in which case, what would be the "right" answers? "Yes, while I'm standing here, I'm also looking for work?" So what exactly is your point,TopTree?

Yes please - will send you a private message.

Major Works by Thames Water in E Dulwich
kiera replied to the-e-dealer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It was a drop-in session and I was surprised to find no-one else there at the time that I went in(about 6pm). There were 2 men, from a company contracted to Thames Water, to answer questions. They will map the sewer system using cameras. They will need access to some properties with manhole covers in the garden, in order to be able to put the camera down the sewer pipes, as they can't access them from the road. They will cut away tree roots which are blocking the pipes as they go. They will report the condition of the pipe network to Thames Water, who will instruct them if they require them to carry out any urgent repairs - they are not expecting to be asked to repair all cracked pipes. Any new pipes will be made of plastic, so will not crack and allow tree roots to enter in future. They start on Monday and expect to take about 2 months to map this area. -
I think the general section - East Dulwich issues. I live in the part of East Dulwich included in this plan, so I'm grateful that you've raised this issue and appreciate your explanations - I'll come along tomorrow to your stall at Peckham Rye to find out more.

The rescued baby birds were indeed wood pigeons - a bird of the countryside, which nests in trees (and doesn't scavenge in bins). However, MM has raised the issue of feral pigeons, which, as everyone knows (I thought) nest in buildings, as do many other birds, including the endangered sparrow. Perhaps this opportunity could be taken to establish the council's policy for their contractors who discover nests during building work. Robin, could you ask the question?

I also apologise for being pedantic, but benefits to people who are out of work are administered by the Dept of Work & Pensions (DWP) & do not include housing benefits. Housing benefits are a separate benefit, administered by the Local Authority.

Good advice but wrong ward and therefore wrong councillor.

Out of interest, I made a point of finding out the hours of the pharmacy in Sainsburys, East Dulwich. It's open until 11pm each weekday evening, until 10pm on Saturdays and. 11-5 on Sundays - 100 hours or more. It also offers a needle exchange service.
-
Looking on the internet, it seems there are already 11 needle exchanges in Southwark, as well as ones in neighbouring boroughs. A couple of the needle exchanges are local -there is one in East Dulwich, Fosters,in Forest Hill Road and one in Rye Lane, Peckham.

I've seen a photo taken of the aftermath - the body of the car's in the road, facing the wrong way, and the engine's on the pavement. The battery's somewhere else. I was told that the driver survived the crash and was taken to hospital.

I believe there is a recycling container for energy-saving lightbulbs in the car park of Dog Kennel Sainsbury.
