  3. Police came to Oglander, but as Sensibleman had had to come come home to call them the 2nd time he sadly lost sight of dodgy blokes. Police helpful & positive, but a frustrating scenario for SM. Hope everyone's home is OK.
  4. Sensibleman followed them on his motorbike from Trossachs rd where we 1st spotted them behaving really suspiciously. They went down Melbourne Grove, Elsie rd and are now in Oglander Rd. They're working in a pair, one each side of the road looking in every house they pass, going into some of the gardens. One mediterranean skinned, dark receding hair, round face, wearing a dark coloured tracksuit and a backpack. the other blonde hair-short and brushy, tanned face, heavy brow with narrow eyes, wearing similar clothing, but 3/4 length trousers. Sensibleman has called police twice, but no response as yet.
  5. Bit of a broad spectrum request that Jojo09. The best thing really is to browse the threads on this forum then you can pick and choose according to whatever interests you. There's something for (almost) everyone in ED. I hope you like it and have a really good time here. Welcome to the area.

Really good idea, but where is 'Summers House', I've never heard of it?
  7. Yes, but to a degree it's a sad fact of life in London or any big city. Maybe be better to live by the "be careful where you trust" philosophy. Some years ago I had my handbag nicked out of my pram, also with sleeping child in it, in Dulwich Library kids section at story time. Lost driving license, cards, a weeks housekeeping/ food shopping money (about ?80), also approx ?100 in coins that I was on my way to pay into the bank for the St Barnabas Mum & Toddler group. I was gutted and outraged and felt guilty for being so stupid/naive, but ultimately I learned my lesson and never again placed anything of value in my pram whilst out in public. It's a hard lesson though. Slummymummmy, don't let it spoil whatever faith you have in human nature - I still believe that the goodies far outweigh the baddies, it's just bad luck that you encountered one of the latter, specially in ED :). You've probably summed up your thiefs life in your OP, pathetic, sad, miserable and black inside. It's been said on other threads I know, but I do believe that karma'll get 'em . . .
  8. Yes, I remember reading about the Upland rd annual one on the forum. It's the kind of thing I had in mind. If there's anyone from Upland Rd out there could they let me know how you do it? Do you go down the official ?300 route each year, or just wing it & hope no-one reports you. Do you charge?
  9. Hmmm, looked at 'the big lunch' site and found the same problems as others have posted. We're not near a park or any closed roads (yet). The search for ideas to make it viable (not expensive) continues . . .
  10. Just idly pondering the possibility after a discussion with some neighbours. Is it possible to do one without having to pay a fortune to close the road?
  11. Another 4 cases associated with Alleyns today. This brings their total cases to something like 17 out of 85 in the UK. They seem to be doing a good job of spreading it slowly but surely.
  12. Another 2 at Alleyns according to the beeb website. They must mix it up in that school.

  14. 6 confirmed at Alleyns now + a sibling of one of these cases. Siblings school not mentioned. BBC news website.
  15. Ooooh, Alleyns is on the telly - sky news.
  16. 5 kids! I wonder whether Alleyns, or someone on their behalf has to notify other schools near them? Will this have any impact on Goodrich, Heber, DVI, Bessemer, DHJS and The Charter? Will they have to close for a while too?
  17. A small thing I know, but they used to have a large, clearly visible, clock in Sainsbury's and now they don't. I don't wear a watch so the clock was very useful.
  18. I agree KC, Though they're clearly on their uppers as they've had to nick a pub garden table and benches to eat their tea at (Note to self; they probably don't have 'tea', they have 'dinner'). I hope they get the money they need poor souls.
  19. Green Goose Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > Pray tell what were these inaccurate assumptons? Don't be a silly goose. My personal involvement (or not)in community events isn't at all relevant to this thread. If you're really that interested in my private life then I think you're a bit odd and scary.
  20. You're making a lot of inaccurate assumptions about me GG. I don't think that the thread is supposed to be that personal. It's irrelevant whether I help at school boot fairs or go sailing - it's about Alleyns and whether or not they are a cuckoo in the community nest.
  21. It's a private school with a charitable status which it keeps courtesy of the benefit they provide to the local community. As a family of 6 members of that local community we, like Asset, have yet to see any benefit fro their existence. You're on a roll AfN!! BTW I was told that the brilliant boot sales were simply a means to raise money for the redevelopment of the playing fields and cricket pavilion. Once they'd done that they stopped them. They were never intended as any altruistic action by Alleyns for the benefit of the local community like say . . . .ummmm . . .err . . hmmm?

The thread is about Alleyns. If you've got issues over the village Infants and Juniors you need to start another thread AfN.
  23. I think the problem for residents behind Alleyns is not just the weight of school traffic. We all know that when you live near a school there will be a certain amount of drop off, pick up traffic. It's that recently Alleyns actions have caused a dramatic increase in the congestion of our local roads all day and at collection times the roads are often impassible and very dangerous for our kids who are walking or cycling home. Combine this with a justifiable perception of complete disinterest from Alleyns (they've been lobbied for years and often don't bother to reply to letters, visits in person are fobbed off, and phone calls never returned. Sometimes they'll lie to get residents off their backs - they did it to me)and maybe you can begin to see why they're not popular with many who live cheek-by-jowl with them. Add to this the aggression we face from the parents and Nannies trying to get little Jeremy to school on time from West Wickham (I've been spat at by an Alleyns parent,) and the speed that they roar up our small residential streets in the mornings and afternoons. And whilst I'm on a roll I'll also mention the name-calling of our local kids who can't afford to go to their 'truly wonderful' school - nice. Put all this in the mix and you might begin to get a sense of our frustration. AS to their charity and community work - well, they may do loads for the community but in 50 years of living adjacent to them none of my family have ever had any benefit from them. Bursaries & scholarships are OK (they have to provide them to keep their charitable status) but you have to be able to afford the private tutor to 'train' for the examinations in order to get the award in the first place (unless you have an exceptionally talented child) and that's ?40 a week that many families just don't have spare. Then the award is only partial fees so you'd still need to find ?500 per month or so. Equal opportunities? - I don't think so. And to me Education is just too important to have this kind of have/ have not division - but that's another thread!
  24. Who? Who? (Not and owl impression). What's he done? Is he dangerous? By the way, I think Andystar's link describes my sister-in-law to a tee.
