  1. I spent Friday afternoon visiting the Refuse and Recycling Centre, just off the Old Kent Road. It was an amazing sight, a huge web of conveyor belts sorting rubbish (a lot of it automatic sorting , such as powerful magnets removing metals and size/weight sorting for paper and cardboard, but a very skilled team also manually pick out items that have been mis-sorted by the automatic sorting). A few things I picked up that may be useful for residents to know. The metallic/plasticky cat food pouches are not recyclable at present. Film on top of ready meals, and cling film are not recyclable. Cling film wraps around the rotors and causes the system to jam. All harder plastic containers, even the darker almost black ones are now recyclable. Tetrapacks are recyclable. The plastic milk containers should be rinsed out, flattened and the lids put back on. They are recycled by pelleting and the pellets are made into new milk containers. Steel cans and aluminium cans (and other aluminium items) are easily recycled by the machines, but if you eg have had a can of baked beans, please rinse it out. Pizza boxes with a few grease marks are recyclable, if they have cheese, tomato sauce, bits of pizza in them they are not (you can cut out the bases and recycle the food free bits. Compostable coffee cups don't compost in the normal food waste, they need a special process, so either return them to where you got them from or put in general waste. (better to use a reusable cup). Please put your recycling loose in the recycling bins, plastic bags jam up the system. (unless you have been given the large clear recycling bags) All glass is separated out and made into glass based insulation. Nothing is sent overseas for recycling, most is done locally. Thanks Renata
  2. I spoke to Kristals today, they are doing walk-ins and for boosters too, if you call you will be able to find out when their clinics are.
  3. Kristal Pharmacy on Evelina Rd in Nunhead are doing them. You need to ring and book a slot though.020 7639 2614
  4. Hi Ninbi, unless your child is double vaccinated they are not considered vaccinated by many countries. I would check the Government information for where you are going. I would check fast as you may need to do a PCR test for your child before you go. I think you would be OK to enter France but not eg Germany. Many EU countries and the US have been double vaccinating their 12-16 year olds for several months now and so that's what is expected for those coming in from elsewhere.
  5. It would only be possible if they are double vaccinated and currently under 16s aren't generally being double vaccinated. They are in the rest of Europe and the USA.
  6. Something to consider, that even if you don't have a place at your top choices on 1st March, you automatically get a place on the waiting list of those schools that were higher on your application form than the allocated school. There is usually quite a lot of movement on waiting lists between March and September. It's also important that you do put down 6 schools that you would consider for your child, as while you can be added to waiting lists later and Southwark will do this quite quickly, Lewisham usually take a while to do this. Renata
  7. Let Southwark know as soon as possible. The impact on your allocation would depend on how soon after the deadline your address changes and at what stage in the place allocation process Southwark is at. You would need to contact schoolsadmissions@southwark.gov.uk when you move. Renata
  8. Hi it may be worth posting this on Nunhead Rocks. Ivydale is a long road! Generally from that area, the mixed schools to look at are Haberdashers, Deptford Green (you are very close to the border with Lewisham) and Kingsdale (lottery system for admissions). The boys schools that local boys have gone to in the last few years are St Thomas the Apostle (after Faith, admissions are on distance), Harris Boys and Forest Hill Boys. Another possible one is the London Nautical School in Blackfriars. Please do use your 6 choices and put them in true order of preference, ie in your case put the mixed schools in order of preference in the top places. I strongly recommend this as it is better to get your 4th, 5th or 6th choice on offer day than be allocated a school by Southwark. Also because you have 6 choices, it is OK to put a longshot or two on your form as it won't affect your chances to get the more likely school. Renata

  10. I think kids walk up to the top of the hill (Forest Hill Rd) and take the P4 from there.
  11. Hi Prit, There are no specialist exotic vets that you can book at short notice within an hour of ED. We have had very good experiences with Ms Robson on Highshore Rd in Peckham for our guinea pigs, I would recommend you try to get an appointment with her tomorrow morning if you haven't already seen a vet. (not a specialist, but Ms Robson is a highly experienced vet who is very knowledgeable about guinea pigs.) Renata
  12. There is a pop-up Vaccination Clinic by the fete on Peckham Rye this Saturday from 2-5pm. It's 16+ and the Pfizer vaccine will be given. No appointments are necessary. Also to give a heads up that The Friends on Peckham Rye Park have their Fete this Saturday and The Friends of Nunhead Cemetery have their open day in the Cemetery!
  13. Athenlay. Boys and Girls. They are based in Peckham Rye Park and also have grounds to the right of Harris Girls.
  14. Hi Cora, thanks for the feedback on your son's experience. I will feed this back. This shouldn't have happened as it was a 16+ clinic. I would suggest those under 18 attending if they have ID to bring it to prove eligibility. 15. There are now walk-in Covid-19 vaccination clinics at the Tessa Jowell Centre in Dulwich for over 18s. These are for either first or second vaccinations. The next ones are this Friday 9am-6pm and Sunday 9am-1pm. Pfizer Vaccine at these two clinics.
  16. Yes, just typical teenagers :) Thanks for the update Roundtable. Fajita kits are also good as they can make this themselves quite easily, I would suggest 2 packs and more chicken, peppers and onions than it says on the packets.Wraps are useful to stuff salad and any leftovers in for lunch the following day.
  17. Huge quantities of milk, toast, butter, baked beans (baked beans on toast that they can help themselves to). Batch cooking of chilli con carne, spaghetti bolognese etc (can make in advance and freeze). Lots of fruit and veg to snack on. Jacket potatoes with assorted fillings
  18. I don't think I've seen one that isn't a bit translucent. A plain sleeveless vest would be an option. Being 11, I guess your daughter is going into secondary? Secondary pupils tend to live in their blazers except in extremely hot weather (saves having to carry it around) .
  19. There are reduced fare tickets available for the East Coast Mainline (LNER) at the moment, ?15 single adult fare https://www.lner.co.uk/seat-sale/?utm_source=Merkle&utm_medium=Email&utm_content=Book_now_CTA&utm_campaign=Campaign_Email_Evinco_Aug21_PerksYes_GC-DB
  20. Friday 17th/Saturday 18th seem to be the most common days to move into halls this year. You are therefore probably looking at a Friday/Saturday overnight trip. If you go by train I would suggest that you check whether split tickets work out cheaper https://book.splitticketing.com/. You stay on the same train but have two tickets (often split at York for the East Coast Line). I also would second getting a friends and family railcard if going by train and if your 12 year old comes with you. Thinks like duvets etc can be ordered on-line for delivery straight there. I would suggest booking accommodation fast as this tend to get booked up early for moving in to University weekends. There are advantages of having a car there eg you take more with you, do an initial shop once you are there. If going by train, you need to get to Kings Cross. There is usually parking space on Linden Grove near Nunhead Station and it's easier to access than Peckham Rye Station (unless you live close to Herne Hill Station). Congratulations to your daughter!
  21. Good, solid comp. Children more likely to get in from the eastern side of Nunhead than the west and children have got places from Ivydale Rd on distance.
  22. Hi it may be worth posting on Nunhead Rocks. I think there are parents with girls both at Harris Girls and Deptford Green on there. Renata
  23. Hi, I didn't say not bothered, it was due to staff shortages due to Covid (ie actual illness, long Coivd, shielding, quarantine t=etc) that reported missed bins in some cases meant that nothing would happen until the next scheduled collection of that particular bin. These are not normal times and therefore sometimes there are hiccups with services due to this. It seems that recycling bin emptying in the South Nunhead area was particularly a problem for a few weeks. I believe it's back to normal now. In general I would suggest if ever you have too much recycling for your bins, put the excess in a clear plastic bag and it will be picked up when your bin is emptied. Whenever I get a clear bag eg from packaging, I keep it just in case I need it for recyclables. Renata
  24. Peckham Rye Adventure Playground reopened yesterday! Its opening hours are Saturday 12-5 Tuesday to Friday 3.30-7 term time. Different hours apply during holidays. Renata
  25. Have you look at Rye Oak Primary's ASD base? http://www.ryeoak.southwark.sch.uk/asc-base/303.html This is for children with ASD and with an EHCP and provides a tailormade provision for the individual child involving both mainstream lessons and alternative provision. It's in Nunhead close to Peckham Rye Park Renata
