  1. The line I was thinking of was from Some Girls, and, like you say, I don't believe they really set out to offend; perhaps it was the spirit of the times. But interestingly they edited the line from the performance in Shine a Light...also the one about "who killed the Kennedys" in Sympathy...a reminder, perhaps, of how commercial they've become. But I'm a huge fan and they can do little wrong in my book. Mightyroar, the Imax presentation is suberb, if only for the sound alone (and yes it is the enormous version). Don't know if you found this Jah, whether it was subliminal or the way the sound was mixed, but you can pick out individual guitar parts etc when the camera is on that musician. It's a great way to deconstruct the music. Recommended.
  2. Saw Shine a Light at the Imax last night. Great stuff. I figure there must be some Stones fans on here, so how about this: in light of the fact they've become such a commercial behemoth, it's easy to forget just how filthy/offensive/outrageous they could be in their heyday. So what's the most gratuitously offensive Stones lyric you can think of? I know mine, but it's so bad I'm not even sure if I can put it up here.
  3. some favorites: so hungry I could eat my own arm face like a slapped arse better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick bloody hellfire I'd rather remove my eyeballs with a spoon (when faced with watching some band you don't like etc) but more usually: oh, fu*k that.
  4. david_carnell; giggirl is on the money about the Royal Court...especially if you book the emergency exit row...from memory I think it's row K in the downstairs theatre. You can check on the auditorium plan on the website.
  5. I always enjoy the Royal Court; best theatre in London I reckon. We're seeing Fram at the National later this month; tres excited; it's all about Fridtjof Nansen.
  6. I love my iPhone; but then I am a mac geek, and would probably buy iTrousers or an iHat if such things existed.
  7. I can't knit or sew ? and I'm always impressed that (blatant sexism alert) women seem to know how to. I like fixing things though. Here's a staircase I spent rather too long on a while back. The before pic doesn't really show just how bad it was to begin with ??someone had cut all the edges off the stair treads. Why, I do not know.
  8. another post has confirmed my suspicion there must be a few Spinal Tap fans out there. So come on, favourite line? Almost impossible to choose I know...mine could be "a bit too much perspective" at Elvis' grave. Or maybe the lyrics to Big Bottom.
  9. I think it was John Betjeman who said if ever there were a nuclear attack, he'd like to be in the habadashery section at John Lewis, because nothing bad could ever happen there. I feel rather the same way about Liberty. Would have thought a pair of ladies could have a cracking time there. There's a new lingerie department for a start. And a nice (but somewhat expensive) restaurant.
  10. so what's the final word on beards? I had one last year and naturally thought it was magnificent. But my wife didn't like it so it was a miracle it lasted as long as it did. So ladies (and gents) ? beards: yay or nay?
  11. Responsible tourism is a term so often abused (and I'm saying this as someone who writes about tourism for a living), but one of the best places I've stayed is the Kasbah du Toubkal in Morocco (about an hour or so from Marrakech). They help fund charitable projects for local kids, and employ lots of local Berber people as guides and muleteers. As far as I can see they make a positive impact on the village where they are located. It's a lovely place to stay, do some trekking or just clear your head. (kasbahdutoubkal.com). It's run by an English guy, Mike McHugo.

    The Oscars

it's true Al Pacino does sail a little close to the wind of self parody. Hoo Haah! I can't help laughing at any shouty line he does now.
  13. JumpinJack, you are right of course, I am trying to wrap my self interest in the blanket of animal welfare. But as you say, this is east dulwich, and the houses (and gardens) are generally quite small (DulwichMum's excluded).
  14. when was the last time you saw a teenager packing a WW1 era rifle, of the kind they seem to sell in Target Arms? If they want respek they need a glock or something
  15. Not sure I see the point in it...as quinnie says, very cute, but why the fuss? Someone brought a load of sweets into my office from H&G this xmas...and they were vile. Reminded me why I gave up eating that sort of stuff when I was about 10.
  16. I'm all for banning dogs within the M25. Cruel to keep a dog in the city.
  17. don't know if this has been done before so apologies if it has...was thinking this morning how the smallest thing can set off the most tangential thoughts. I saw a picture of Whitney Houston, and could not help thinking how dreadful her version of I will always love you is. What?s everyone?s least favourite cover version? And which cover do you think is better than the original? I?ve always preferred Hendrix? All along the watchtower to Dylan?s.
  18. Queen. Not the Queen, but the anthemic beat combo. And linked to that, the movie Flash Gordon. Classic.
  19. sounds like a scam; telegraph would surely be able to afford to send a proper photographer as well as a reporter...even in these austere times.
  20. OK, so now I know it was a pit bull I had to pull off some poor kid in Brixton a few months back. Vile animals. Viler owners.
  21. Forget about decaff; anything that goes through a nasty unnatural process can't be good for you. And it doesn't taste nice either, so what's the point? I gave up caffeine a couple of years ago for the same reasons as you (used to have 5+ cups of black coffee a day). I was addicted to the process of making the drink as much as anything else. I found green tea good at first, whist still has a bit of caffeiene in, then on to caffeine free Rooibos tea, which is great because it tastes nice without milk. I just have coffee as an occasional treat now ? only ever when I'm out, never instant ? and I love it. Good luck.
  22. My top three irritations as a cyclist are: Drivers that pull any reckless move to overtake, then scream to a halt right in front of you because of some obstacle they didn't see. Driving into the cyclists' box at the lights (obviously ? motorbikes too ?? look at the picture on the road, is there an engine? No.) Using the phone without a hands free kit. Not that keen on hands free kits either! I've been cycling in London a few years and I envy the posters who say they have no problems ?? there are some right lunatics out there. But I do acknowledge cyclists are often no angels. Top three cyclists' bad habits: running red lights; not indcating; not riding with lights at night. All pretty inexcusable.
  23. Are there any self employed types out there who could give me some advice on business cards? I'm going freelance in a few weeks and need to get some cards/letterheads printed up. Is there a good local company? or is it much cheaper to buuy online? Any suggestions gratefully received.
  24. Echo Asset's comments...at least three/four layers, all man-made fabric that will wick away sweat. Beg borrow or steal a gore-tex outer jacket with a hood, wear a fleece under that and a couple of base/mid layers. if you're not moving around much (are you doing any sport out there?) then a Rab-type down jacket is great. V puffy though so not easy to move about in. Bike shops do really good thermal leggings, not necessarily expensive. Two/three pairs of socks. Do you need to use your fingers? Mittens are warmer if not. Take some gloves as well in case you do need fingers ? get the type with waterproof outer and fleecy inner. And most importantly a hat ? 25% of body heat is lost through your head. Sounds a bit extreme but a balaclava is a really useful but of kit. keeps your face warm, and you can just wear it as a neck warmer until it gets really cold. Accessorize with a white silk scarf only if you want to look like the kind of pretentious traveller that gets really excited about having fancy gear. Sounds like a great trip ??enjoy.
  25. Don't know but I wish they'd drive more carefully. Bloody post office vans hammer it down the road as if it were silverstone. Does this bother any other residents? Wouldn't be so bad if they could actually deliver the post on time.
