Strange man near the Peckham Rye Cafe / One o'clock club
candj replied to jimbo1964's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Loz, I'm not posing a "bear-trap" style of question to you by asking if you have children or not, and it has nothing to do with being in a "club" as you point out. Btw, being a parent, you do develop insight and instinct which enables you to ferociously guard your child. I merely ask because if you don't have children, perhaps you can then empathise with those who do rather than be quick to judge and call us paranoid because someone was seen FILMING children. (This latter point of whether it's okay to film children without consent is rather beaten to death and I think we all know the answer, playing devil's advocate or not). I haven't posted since the first page of this thread and I asked you a question which you simply ignored so I asked again. I'm trying to enlighten myself on your posts, I just don't understand where you're coming from that's all. I have since answered my own questions. Thank you. -

Loz, with all your griping about people not answering your question I've noticed you haven't answered MY question - Do you have children, and would you like someone furtively filming them in a park? Well? -

What/where is > this place you fear it will end up? Do you have children? Do you like random strangers coming up and taking their photos? I don't know where it will end up, but unless it's in our family photo album it seems odd. I don't think I'm losing out on documenting any social history - take someone else's child's photo. This man sounds like he was being suspicious. Why the furtive camera? Why not openly film children and why not go up to the parents and introduce yourself when doing it furtively? 'Hello, my name is so-in-so and I'm a local film maker doing a documentary on ... ' -

I have to agree with Jimbo1964 and don't think it's paranoia at all. I personally do not like people taking photos of or filming my children because you never know where it will end up. We were recently outside an art gallery and a photographer took a snap of my 3 year old and my husband promptly made him delete the photo, it was plain rude. Perhaps I'm paranoid, but I think you can't be too careful these days. Good for your mother, Jimbo, for looking out for her grandson. -
Done! I'm old enough to be the Jonas Brothers' mum! Yikes.

Recommendation wanted: Paris hotel or self catering apartment
candj replied to Travelimo's topic in The Lounge
Hi Travelimo, Hotel Champs de Mars 7, rue du Champs de Mars 75007 33 45 51 5230 hotel-du-champ-de-mars.com (close to Rue Cler, nice small hotel, not very expensive, better without kids, in a great area with market street, closet metro is Ecole Militaire) Hotel Marignan Champs-Elysees 12, rue Marignan 75008 hotelmarignan.fr 33 40 76 3456 (off the Champs-Elysees in the Golden Triangle, nice hotel bigger and better for families, more expensive, staff are very helpful with children, Alain Ducasse restaurant next door) My husband and I used to always stay at the first hotel before having children. Since having children the latter hotel has been our regular. Have a look on trip advisor and see what you think. Bon voyage! -
Jah Lush - I forgot about Gogol - The Overcoat (and other short stories) Dulwich Bhoy - Agreed very hard core book, but everyone should read it as it will change one's outlook on the world. What great lists everyone is compiling - Some I haven't read so will use this thread as a guide! Thanks!

Crikey, where to begin? What genre? What century?? Much more difficult than movies. Off the top of my head: Master & Margarita (Bulgakov) - Agreed Jah Lush, one of my favourite books! The Moors Last Sigh (Rushdi) Midnight's Children (Rushdi) A Suitable Boy (Seth, in fact, everything V. Seth is wonderful) Golden Gate (Seth) The Great Gatsby (Fitzgerald) Travels with Charley (Steinbeck) Middlesex (Eugenides) Independence Day (Ford) To Kill a Mockingbird (Lee) English Patient (Ondaatje) Breakfast at Tiffany's (Capote) Anna Karenina (Tolstoy) Heart of Darkness (Conrad) Such an endless list ..... have to go take a look at the book shelves!

Never Ending Story (book shop) closing down?

Perhaps Venita can sell it to someone who will then keep it open? Just a thought. Good luck to her consultancy business, I know she ran a lot of counselling programmes for children and families. -
Never Ending Story (book shop) closing down?
candj replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Oh no! This is terrible as it is such a nice shop and the owner is so open to children coming in and having a seat in the kiddie corner browsing books! What to do!? It was always such a nice little respite on NCR away from the street market. :( -
Birthday Girl Friends with Money (for people who like Jen Aniston) Blue White Red (or collectively known as Three Colours, although Blue was the best, IMHO) Rosemary's Baby Subway De Battre Mon Coeur S'est Arrete Nine Queens Irreversible

Indeed MM, how could you forget Chinatown?! Probably one of my favourite movies of all time! But these are not bad either.. Il Postino Shallow Grave The Hunger Pi Cat on a Hot Tin Roof A Clockwork Orange One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Sunset Boulevard The Apartment Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Our lists are getting too long!

Chinatown Charade Casablanca Taxi Driver Fargo (anything Cohen Brothers) Scarface Rope (or anything Hitchcock, really) Bladerunner Cape Fear (the original) Citizen Kane You're right MM, this is just the list du jour! *edited for gross spelling error

A friend of mine poisoned a rat in his garden and it managed to die in an inaccessible spot on a hot water pipe behind his washing machine in the basement. It took two builders ripping the place apart for a week to discover where this odor was coming from and as it was wafting up to the kitchen above my friend thought that it was rotting veg for a whole week before. Really disgusting. Sorry for your trauma. I thought ED had a fairly robust cat population to keep rats away?

No, but perhaps Norman Foster or Malcolm Rogers will design something equally as fabulous! Can't wait for the London Olympics even though I don't really care much about the Olympics, it's just great for London. :)) On another note, the Chinese have been absolutely militant about security in Beijing (airport now is currently closed for the next 3 hours) that I can't imagine what London will have to go through.

Not that I know how fraud departments work either, but it seems so blatantly obvious with a thread a mile long discussing 5 different institutions where fraud has taken place in ED. Cash is king! ;-)

But it seems from a previous post on this thread that the police were not helpful - otherwise a certain petrol station near a certain roundabout would be shut by now. It seems the way forward is that banks will decline all transactions from foreign countries unless clients call ahead of time to inform them exactly where they are going. Also, having transactions texted to mobiles are a great idea, but some people would have a thousand texts!

Perhaps I'm missing the point or it's somehow illegal, but can you not just go back into this popular supermarket and go to the management and tell them which cashier you used and explain what has happened? This happened to my husband a year or so ago at Cafe Richoux on Picadilly when buying lunch using a debit card he had never used before. Someone was trying to take money in Egypt the following day, but husband's bank refused. We then went back into Richoux the following day and told the manager what happened and have never seen our waiter since.
