  1. w00t - this thread is back! Nothing like the age old Iceland vs Waitrose debate to liven up a Tuesday.

Any opinions??? I wouldn't say there's a one size fits all rule for what single men think. It's fair to say if a woman is into their 30's and beyond, and hasn't been married/had children, you'd presume that's something they'd be after a bit quicker than someone in their 20's etc.. But then to be fair, if a guy is in his 30's and hasn't been married/had kids, he's probably starting to think about that kind of thing anyway. I'm 30, and it's not something that would scare me off these days as it's basically what I'm looking for too, but then I'm sure there are guys my age and older who aren't quite ready for that stuff yet.
  3. If you know someone with an iPhone4 or iPad, you can create your own FindMyiPhone account on there and then use that same account on your 3GS. See here.
  4. I'm a single guy who's 30, but as this gathering seems to involve ladies in their 30s and 40s, it's sounding too much like cougar town for me :)) I'll gatecrash the under 30's event...>:D<
  5. FindMyIphone let's you locate it via GPS, and disable it etc.. but I can't remember if it's configured by default, or if it's something you would have needed to enable. EDIT - looking at this it looks like it's something you need to configure on the phone so may not be much use in this case. I'd recommend anyone who has an iPhone to enable it though. Could come in handy when something like this happens.
  6. Just been watching some bus stops around Victoria station from my desk at work - buses were arriving seconds after it came up as due on the website. Looking good. ....ok, so it's a slow day at work! :)
  7. Hmm, I should have put that in inverted commas! Just playing along to the boring old stereotype mentioned above! ;-) Do individal people really try to change an area (unless they are opening some kind of business)? I think it's a lot more of a gradual process than that. A new business may attract more people, which in turn attracts more businesses of a certain type, which in turn attracts more people who like that sort of thing etc..
  8. Well DulwichFox, whether you like it or not, yuppies like me are part of this community and as I see EDF as an extension to that community, it'd be nice if you could not shoot down anyone who is positive about the community that they live in. Now, I'm off to start a thread about getting a Watirose branch on LL... ;-)
  9. Fox, it's not an English thing to want to move to an area and try and change it. It's just a process that happens in urban areas, i.e. (this)! I fail to see how ED getting some nice shops and resteraunts is some how compareable to the Costas?! So, if you've no intention of moving out why put down the area you live in? It is what it is. If the place was getting filled with chain stores, all the independent places were closing and it was losing it's character I'd be with you but that's not the case. If you get people throwing up in your front garden, you have my sympathies. That must be very unpleasant, but other than that I fail to see what your problem is exactly?
  10. I do really wonder why you live here if that's what you now think of your local area?! I'm sure it was different 10+ years ago. I moved here about a year ago and love the place, but then the "overpriced and rowdy" pubs, "overpriced" restaurants and "arty farty" craft shops are exactly why I did. I think the same would go for most other recent arrivals to the area - and I know plenty of people who've lived here for years who like the way it has changed into the place it is now. This is London - things change. Sometimes areas change and you feel priced out or feel like it's not your sort of place anymore. I'm sorry if that's how you feel, but please don't rain on the parade of anyone who likes to be positive about the area that they live in.
  11. DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I think I prefered ED when it was undiscovered and > shops and pubs catered for local people. So you preferred it when it was the Royston Vasey of SE London? The more publicity the area gets and the more people it brings in, and therefore the more people who can sustain cool shops, bars and restaurants, the better it is IMHO.
  12. For eating, I'd highly recommend the Thai Corner Cafe on North cross road - but make sure you book! It gets very busy at the weekends. Great good, plus it's BYO. For drinking, I'm a fan of the Bishop but there are loads of great pubs on the lane. The Mag and the Plough both do a great Sunday roast. If you fancy going over to Dulwich village, check out the Crown and Greyhound. The new Italian there is really good too - I think it's called Rocca. To be honest, there are too many places to mention. Just go out and explore! :) I've only been living here for just under a year, so I'm still looking for quirky places nearby to try! I'm branching out and exploring around Camberwell at the moment - there's an old-school Greek resteraunt on Camerbwell Grove called 'Vineyard' which has fake vines and grapes all over the ceiling! Food was very tasty. For some sport, I'd recommend the Dulwich college sports club - which is basically a gym that uses the school's facilities outside of school hours. Really good value monthly membership, and never that busy. Played Badminton there on Sunday with a friend, had the whole sports hall to ourselves so played some basketball in between games! ED is a great place to live. Welcome!
  13. It's difficult to know what to believe at the moment. I'm heading home from Victoria. May all be scaremongering going on but as I can work from home I may as well. Reading twitter doesn't help. A constant stream of riot updates contradicting each other!
  14. Not sure if Palmerston has been looted - but it's definitely been bricked. Photo from twitter -> http://t.co/0Y7Vocy
  15. I'm hoping they also widen the main door to the station! It's just about wide enough to get two people through - same with the entrance to the bridge. Always a bit of a squeeze when it's busy with people coming in either directions!
  16. Strangely my premium came down when I moved here from NW London (Queen's Park) at the end of last year. I was expecting it to be the other way round. I'm sure it will be going up at renweal time though - I think that's the case across the board.
  17. I notice Mr. Barber has won the Online Councillor of the Year award. Many congratulations James - richly deserved! His online presence has made me feel a lot more in touch with local government. In previous areas I've lived I can honestly say I rarely knew who my councillor was - they were pretty invisible. Having James' presence on here makes the whole process so much more accessible - it's very refreshing!
  18. Seems the new Waitrose on Old Brompton Road is going to be the first smaller format store to trial the name 'Little Waitrose'. A new sub-brand.
  19. Prince Philip is a legend. My favourite of his gaffes is when he asked a Scottish driving instructor how he kept the natives off the booze long enough to get a licence.

It's pretty much exactly one mile, and East Dulwich station isn't even in the East Dulwich ward - it's South Camberwell, but anyway I'm nitpicking :)

It's just that saying this is a skanky part of SE London sounded troll-like to me - but then you're entitled to your view and I'm entitled to think it's slightly detached from reality.

  23. James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > BUT its clear that despite many individual posts > in the past requesting such another supermarket > that when actually asked posters are strongly > against. I'd have to strongly disagree with that statement. There are plenty of no's, some more vocal than others and also a fair amount of yes's and maybe's. I don't think it's clear cut at all, and as someone else stated I'm sure there are plenty of forum lurkers who have not made their opinion known as well as the ED residents who don't visit the forum.
  24. My vote would be a yes, ideally for a Waitrose but it would depend on the specifics, i.e. where it would be located. In an ideal world, it would replace the Co-op which never seems that well stocked when I go in. For me personally it wouldn't effect my spending on LL as I tend to go to Sainsbury's or the Waitrose in Beckenham for my main food shop anyway. I'd still use LL for what it's good for - speciality shops and nice cafes/restaurants.
  25. That's excellent news! Thanks so much for letting us know Tessa.
