  1. Also, it's not cheaper to live out in the home counties and commute in when you add in the cost of a ?4-6,000 a year season ticket to the cost of your monthly mortgage. In the contact of that extra ?400 a month for a season ticket, on top of your mortgage, East Dulwich and Forest Hill are actually relatively good value.
  2. I find this thread and generally, the rising narrative of 'cyclists as a problem' across the media at the moment, really at odds with my experience. I am a car driver, a pedestrian and an occasional cyclist. Yes, I sometimes see bad behaviour by cyclists, but also by car drivers and often by pedestrians (walking out in front of traffic whilst texting for example). So which of these problems should concern me most. It seems to me that, if I were going to get exercised about one of these forms of antisocial behaviour, it would be dangerous car driving by a country mile. It's the most frequent observed in my experience and has by far the most serious consequences for other people. Is that to excuse the other forms of bad behaviour, of course not. But to fixate on cyclists specifically just seems odd to me. Maybe I've been missing all the deaths and injuries that cyclists have been inflicting on people, I don't know?
  3. If you want to loose weight (I'm not even sure that this should be a goal in itself - 'be healthier / fitter' would seem better, but whatever), then why would you not just follow the route of a healthy, varied diet and regular exercise? I just don't get why people are constantly chasing weird, faddy diets that may or may not work, when we know exactly what does.
  4. They knocked on my door at 20:45. I had just managed to get my kids to go to sleep and was not amused. CRUK is a worthy organisation, but harassing people on the door step, late in the evening like this is not a good move.
  5. Clearly a grown man cycling at speed on the pavement is an idiot. It doesn't mean that I take satisfaction in seeing him hurt. I too feel sorry for the car driver, but my immediate concern in such a situation would be for the well being of the potentially injured man. I think this is Lowlanders point. Thankfully, I think this type of incident is extremely rare.
  6. I honestly don?t get this requirement for all new properties to include off street parking. Surely this just encourages more car ownership?
  7. Would be great to get these installed near to the nurseries and Schools (so parents can drop off, then cycle to work), the train stations and parks I would have thought.
  8. I think Jeremy was referring to the fact that it usually happens the other way round (i.e. cinemas becoming churches).
  9. Is this where 'through the trees' was? Has it closed down?
  10. I came across this tutorial online http://jonesdesigncompany.com/decorate/painted-house-numbers/
  11. Excellent day. Thanks to all those involved.
  12. I've been wondering the exact same thing. Would love to know whether their is a company who will do this professionally for you.
  13. So they?re looking for property in ED. What?s the betting that Kirsty and Phil have them looking at properties in Nunhead, Sydenham and Norwood, before finally finding out that they ended up in Beckenham one year later.
  14. Just seen from the website that appeal is being heard on 18th September.
  15. What happened to this? Was the planning appeal refused, or withdrawn.
  16. I abhor speed bumps. How about hidden speed cameras, average speed cameras, mobile speed cameras and some actual traffic enforcement officers to manage not just speed but other forms of bad / dangerous driving? Also, harsher penalties for those caught - not bigger fines, which those with the money to pay them can just shrug off - but licence suspensions, speed restricters and bans (seriously)? Speed bumps are a blunt tool that encourage people into bigger cars, to break and accelerate the whole time (adding to noise and pollution) and slow down emergency vehicles. They're a lazy way of addressing speeding and a very blunt tool.
  17. Which tree is it - or is it The tree.
  18. Terribly designed survey. I would welcome any attempt to encourage more responsible ownership however.
  19. I am guessing that the cars have been used by people living in the vicinity, or they wouldn't have ended up parked here.
  20. Instead of using ?greener, safer, cleaner? money to spray paint some bollards, why not replace them with some raised beds, containing real flowers. Or, plant some trees in their place? That said, I prefer them painted than plain.
