  1. Close some streets in one direction, so as to partition the road and create a network of traffic free cycle routes. Introduce smart card operated, auto locking stands at shops, schools, stations etc, that you can dock your bikes in (like the Boris bikes, but for you private cycle). A bike carriage on trains? Education. Basically lots of investment which isn't going to occur.
  2. The problem is that feminism is narrowly focuseed on women's experience. The norms and acceptance around women's identities and their ability to take on (what where traditionally) men's roles have evolved, but in many cases expectations of men haven't. It's all good and well fighting for a woman's right to have equal status in the workplace, but if there is not just as much emphasis put on a man's right to nurture and be full time carer of children, then it's not going to work out. For most men, the idea of taking care of the house and being the primary chid carer are emasculating - and many women would see it this way too. The fact is that we need to address traditional gender roles from both sides of the spectrum. We need a movement that isn't focussed simply on the rights and roles of women, but on those of men as well.
  3. Doesn't the provision of a small car park actually increase the liklihood of people driving, with the knock on effects of increased traffic and congestion on surrounding streets?
  4. Sainsburys basics range is really good value. Frozen mixed veg around 70p / KG I think.
  5. I'd be interested to know on what grounds the application was declined.
  6. From my brief perusal of the objections they seem to mainly fall into the following categories (I may have missed some): 1. Don't want an M&S because it's expensive 2. Delivery lorries are already a nightmare (unclear exactly how M&S will change this, but seems to be a vague belief that lorry size will increase?) 3. Removing the car park and building flats will add to parking pressures / we have a right to park on our street.
  7. Hi James, The refuse collection from Heber School seems to be taking place at around 5am for some reason. It's pretty noisy. any chance that the council could maybe put it back an hour?
  8. This government's vilification of the most vulnerable is despicable.
  9. I would be very cautious of buying goods under the circumstances described. Even if they are being sold at a genuinely bargain price, you can't be sure of their provenance.
  10. Personally I wouldn't touch it with a teak barge pole. Anyone selling from the back of a van, door to door, with a story containing words such as 'suddenly available / quick sale / huge discount' is probably not to be trusted.
  11. I'd be careful, it could secretly contain seahorse.
  12. Noise team out if action. And already said the chances of anything constructive coming from talking to those making the noise very small, plus it was raining heavily and I had a three year old to deal with. I admit that it's pointless posting on here about it, but at 4 am when you can't sleep and your really really pissed off, and sometimes you feel like screaming into the void as catharsis.
  13. If you are the ones with your windows open, playing loud music at 4 am and who've kept my 3 year old awake all night, thereby ruining her best friends birthday party that she's been looking forward to for weeks and which is later today... You are a pathetic, selfish twt. If you want to go clubbing, go clubbing. Don't keep half the street awake.
  14. yes, a bit early to start claiming victory in the War on Winter too, I would have thought.
  15. ....or just call the council, who'll pick it up for free.

Thanks. The website implies that they are running to the revised timetable regardless, but I could be wrong.
  17. Yes, 2 trains an hour.
  18. Southern Trains are planning on running a 'snow timetable' starting tomorrow. It's available on their website here (Timetable 32): http://www.southernrailway.com/your-journey/plan-my-journey/temporary-timetable-b
  19. The problem with this extension is that it drives the southern spur of the northern line into a dead end (restricting further development), adds only two new stops, both in areas already well served. The benefits are negligible compared to other potential infrastructure proposals which become less likely to ever happen as a result. It's a deal with a private developer who will the primary beneficiaries of this 'public' investment. Effectively an ongoing subsidy paid by existing communities, possibly to the detriment of the future regeneration of their neighbourhoods. Yes some future workers in Nine Elms will have an alternative to the tube at Vauxhall. Brilliant.
  20. Good overview of a number of popular diets here: http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/loseweight/Pages/top-10-most-popular-diets-review.aspx Personally I don't believe any of them work long term. Eat a healthy, varied diet and incorporate regular exercise into your daily routine. It may be boring and may not have quick results, but its also the only sustainable option over the long term.
  21. Someone has likely been seriously hurt, maybe worse. Please think about what you're posting.
  22. sweetgirl Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > gimme... if you don't drive any other road > vehicle you obviously will never know!! cyclists > CAN be very difficult to see, SOMETIMES they just > appear from nowhere! > No, bikes cannot possibly 'appear from nowhere'. If you are turning out from a side street onto a main road it is entirely your responsibility to check that the way is clear and not to pull out into another vehicles path, regardless of the type of vehicle.
  23. I'm not sure it's urgent enough to go to A&E.
  24. I have what i suspect to be a tibial stress fracture. I would like to get it checked out by a doctor, but I am registered with Dulwich Medical Centre (4 week wait). I'm thinking of just paying to see a private doctor, but not having done this before I have no idea how you go about finding one. Has anyone got any recommendations? Thanks.
