'virtually ignored' - Monica please don't think your efforts with the physic garden so far have gone unnoticed, I enjoyed looking around it last year when visiting the hospital for a blood test. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Great idea, esp for that situation.

I got an early train (about 5.30am I think) from Denmark Hill back in December. I got to the station stupid early and hung about by the barriers for a while before going down on to the platform. As you say, no staff, but I reassured myself slightly by thinking about how many security cameras there must be. I was the first one there but felt better when a couple of other passengers arrived on the platform, by the time my train came there were I think 3 or 4 of us waiting, no chat of course but a v slight acknowledgement from one or two. I'd do it again if I had to, probably safer actually at the station than walking along the street at that hour. Safe journey! Annie

Where round here is air-conditioned?
another annie replied to d.b's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Great Exhibition is indeed lovely and cool. A tea (or in this weather a chilled tap water) for me and a Guinness for my partner is our perfect wind-down at the end of the day (luckily for us that's about 6ish). The staff are all really friendly, too. And relax... -
Tractorland - thanks so much for taking the time to write all this down. Our phone/broadband comes separately from BT, guess thats why paying over ?50 a month on top for Virgin tv seems a lot. Our Samsung tv probably dates back to about 2006, so could be on the edge there, but will have a try. Gradually getting our heads around this. Thanks again - Annie

Thanks Springer, fishbiscuits, that's really helpful.

So Virgin Media cable tv is going up another ?3.50 a month from September. I hardly use any of the extra channels, box sets etc and the new Tivo box is slow and not that easy to use. How does Freeview work? I can see what channels are available on Freeview from looking in the Radio Times (yes, I'm that old), but how does the signal get in to the house? Through the same cable? Anyone's experiences or advice welcome, thanks!

Apologies if this has been mentioned before, just wanted to thank whoever is responsible for the wildflower planting along Green Dale, it's looking just lovely at the moment and really lifted my mood walking through to Townley Road from Sainsburys this morning, taking me back to the cottage gardens of my parents and grandparents and country walks of my childhood. I think the signs said Bessemer School was involved and something like Southwark Greener.

Thanks, all. The garage didn't seem surprised either, and already had some in that matched well enough. (Felt a bit silly when I saw how quickly they popped them on, though.) Anyway, I'll stop whinging now I've heard about davidq's Golf, and maybe tomorrow I'll stop looking out of the window to make sure we still have a whole car...

The backs of both wing mirrors on our Mini Cooper have been ripped off. So annoying, can't imagine someone actually wanted them. We've had a look around, but if anyone finds something chucked into their garden that looks like it might be one or both (they'll look like an empty black plastic dish, the innards have been left on the car) please contact me before you throw them away. The car was parked on Goodrich Road, just off the crossroads with Landcroft Road. Thanks! Check your cars, folks, but can't see what we can do to prevent this sort of thing. The car was parked on Goodrich Road, just off the crossroads with Landcroft Road. Thanks!

Thanks for posting this, I'd just noticed ours was down and (having tried that old turn it off and on again wheeze) was just about to phone them, now I'll just wait and see if it comes back...

We take books to the British Heart Foundation bookshop on Streatham High Road. Not exactly conveniently local, but an easy enough trip on the P13 on my day off. They've never turned down our donations, and we usually have a look round and end up buying more books, it's very well arranged and there's always something interesting.

We've been on the list for a plot at One Tree Hill Allotments for 4 years, and I was hoping we might be getting close to the top of the list. Wishful thinking obviously - I've just looked at their website, and they're now saying it could be a 10 year wait for Southwark residents if they apply now.

Thought I was imagining things when I saw what looked like a tiny hummingbird in the garden this afternoon - on googling I'm pretty sure it was a hummingbird hawk-moth. It hovered/fed off several verbena bonariensis flowers, then flew off into nextdoor's garden. Has anyone else seen these?

V1 & V2 Bombs dropped on Lordship Lane.

Close, but I think that's the crossroads of Landells and Goodrich Roads. Interesting photo, though, thanks. Will investigate that website further, looks like I could spend hours there... -
V1 & V2 Bombs dropped on Lordship Lane.

Belated thanks Y'man for your memories about the shops on the crossroads of Landcroft and Goodrich Roads, nice to think of you coming along to get lunch here from your mum every day! And I like the detailed way you've remembered Mrs Bartlett's daughter's Austin Mini - it obviously made an impression on you! Guess there was a 'shopfront' then - unfortunately the front of the house has been rather blandly rebuilt, the only hint of the shopfront being the 'cut-off' corner, where I guess the entrance was. Still looking for a photo of the house as a shop, and on Open House day last year we saw a postcard of the Baptist Chapel from Lordship Lane, the photo looks down Goodrich and you can just make out the grocers shop. So planning on another visit to Southwark local history to try to find that photo, realising that our previous fruitless search of 'grocers shop Landcroft Road' etc was maybe too specific - the postcard we saw was titled 'Baptist Chapel Lordship Lane SE' - maybe a tip for anyone else looking for photos of specific buildings? Love this sort of thread, one of the best things about the EDF, keep it up, all! -
Recommendation for any local-ish car boot sales?
another annie replied to Sarahbeee's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The annual car boot sale at Heber School must be coming up soon, does anyone have a date for this? -
I'm getting this orange CloudFlare/Captcha message, too, it started last Saturday. Found it a bit worrying, so I'm slightly relieved it seems it's not just me. When I click back on the EDF on my shortcuts bar it goes away, but reappears next time I visit, or sometimes pops up again in the same session if I'm on the forum a while. Sometimes the message says 'You're nearly there', though I've been careful not to click anywhere in the Cloudflare window. I'm using Safari on a Mac. It's not happening at work, where we have a pc using Google Chrome.

Hi, yes, I phoned 101 last night and they also phoned me first thing this morning to take more details. And when I popped in to the Plough later this morning to see if anything had been found when they were clearing up, the police had already contacted them about checking their cctv footage. Plough staff were also helpful and took time this morning to make sure they knew exactly where we'd been sitting.

My purse was stolen in The Plough last night. I've stopped the bank card of course, but there were other things in there, library cards, phone top-up card etc, of no use to anyone else but annoying to replace. Slim chance, I know, but if anyone finds a discarded brown leather purse with a button on the front please could they contact me? Thanks, Annie.

Agree with all the above reviews, after some bad experiences with builders it was so refreshing to find Matthew Hanson and team. In 2014 they replastered and decorated our water-damaged hall and bedroom walls and ceiling, and since then they are always our first call for building and decorating jobs. Matthew is a great problem-solver, Pepe did an ace plastering job on awkward curved ceilings, and recently Bertie has repaired a broken Victorian windowsill and a large wooden gate. All done with no fuss and at a reasonable price.

We've just used Matthew Hanson and team for a third time and once again were very happy with the work and the price. Over the last year they've tackled plastering (including excellent ceilings, thanks Pepe!), floorboard replacement and various painting and decorating. They clear up properly afterwards and are as unobtrusive as it's possible for decorators to be, important as we work at home much of the time. We're gradually sorting out a neglected property, and in our experience these are the tradesmen we would welcome back into our home with confidence: Matthew Hanson 07939 530699 Ed Shaw (ED Electrician) 07793 651564 Russell Perring (Roofing) 07852 972052 Thanks, all! We're halfway up Landcroft Road. I phoned Virgin a couple of hours ago as Catch up tv and iplayer hasn't been working for a couple of days, and the picture has been freezing occasionally when watching normal tv. They said there is a problem in our area causing 'intermittent' problems to customers that may not be fixed until Monday 1st December. I just said 'ok, thanks' and rang off before thinking Monday!? - that's a week without service then... Now the thing's not working at all.
