  1. We're looking for a secondhand car, can anyone suggest a trustworthy car dealer? Our last car came from this forum, and before that bought from friends. Just don't know where to start this time.
  2. Business as usual there this morning, great colour and cut from Lindsay. Apparently they were closed Monday for Thames Water works which over-ran to Tuesday. Phone calls were being redirected to a mobile so not sure why you couldn't get through.
  3. Yes, I noticed they looked closed when I passed it on Monday, but I have an appointment tomorrow morning and have received the usual confirmation text from them so fingers crossed they will be open then...
  4. Close, but I think that's the crossroads of Landells and Goodrich Roads. Interesting photo, though, thanks. Will investigate that website further, looks like I could spend hours there...
  5. Belated thanks Y'man for your memories about the shops on the crossroads of Landcroft and Goodrich Roads, nice to think of you coming along to get lunch here from your mum every day! And I like the detailed way you've remembered Mrs Bartlett's daughter's Austin Mini - it obviously made an impression on you! Guess there was a 'shopfront' then - unfortunately the front of the house has been rather blandly rebuilt, the only hint of the shopfront being the 'cut-off' corner, where I guess the entrance was. Still looking for a photo of the house as a shop, and on Open House day last year we saw a postcard of the Baptist Chapel from Lordship Lane, the photo looks down Goodrich and you can just make out the grocers shop. So planning on another visit to Southwark local history to try to find that photo, realising that our previous fruitless search of 'grocers shop Landcroft Road' etc was maybe too specific - the postcard we saw was titled 'Baptist Chapel Lordship Lane SE' - maybe a tip for anyone else looking for photos of specific buildings? Love this sort of thread, one of the best things about the EDF, keep it up, all!
  6. The annual car boot sale at Heber School must be coming up soon, does anyone have a date for this?
  7. I'm getting this orange CloudFlare/Captcha message, too, it started last Saturday. Found it a bit worrying, so I'm slightly relieved it seems it's not just me. When I click back on the EDF on my shortcuts bar it goes away, but reappears next time I visit, or sometimes pops up again in the same session if I'm on the forum a while. Sometimes the message says 'You're nearly there', though I've been careful not to click anywhere in the Cloudflare window. I'm using Safari on a Mac. It's not happening at work, where we have a pc using Google Chrome.
  8. Hi, yes, I phoned 101 last night and they also phoned me first thing this morning to take more details. And when I popped in to the Plough later this morning to see if anything had been found when they were clearing up, the police had already contacted them about checking their cctv footage. Plough staff were also helpful and took time this morning to make sure they knew exactly where we'd been sitting.
  9. My purse was stolen in The Plough last night. I've stopped the bank card of course, but there were other things in there, library cards, phone top-up card etc, of no use to anyone else but annoying to replace. Slim chance, I know, but if anyone finds a discarded brown leather purse with a button on the front please could they contact me? Thanks, Annie.
  10. Agree with all the above reviews, after some bad experiences with builders it was so refreshing to find Matthew Hanson and team. In 2014 they replastered and decorated our water-damaged hall and bedroom walls and ceiling, and since then they are always our first call for building and decorating jobs. Matthew is a great problem-solver, Pepe did an ace plastering job on awkward curved ceilings, and recently Bertie has repaired a broken Victorian windowsill and a large wooden gate. All done with no fuss and at a reasonable price.
  11. I went to Willis B last year after a truly disastrous permanent colour at my previous hairdressers. Jack there did a remarkable rescue job on the colour. Second visit was just as good, plus the best cut I've had for years (I've got difficult, thin hair).
  12. We've just used Matthew Hanson and team for a third time and once again were very happy with the work and the price. Over the last year they've tackled plastering (including excellent ceilings, thanks Pepe!), floorboard replacement and various painting and decorating. They clear up properly afterwards and are as unobtrusive as it's possible for decorators to be, important as we work at home much of the time. We're gradually sorting out a neglected property, and in our experience these are the tradesmen we would welcome back into our home with confidence: Matthew Hanson 07939 530699 Ed Shaw (ED Electrician) 07793 651564 Russell Perring (Roofing) 07852 972052 Thanks, all! Annie and Mik
  13. We're halfway up Landcroft Road. I phoned Virgin a couple of hours ago as Catch up tv and iplayer hasn't been working for a couple of days, and the picture has been freezing occasionally when watching normal tv. They said there is a problem in our area causing 'intermittent' problems to customers that may not be fixed until Monday 1st December. I just said 'ok, thanks' and rang off before thinking Monday!? - that's a week without service then... Now the thing's not working at all.
  14. Thanks computedshorty and bingobongo, really interesting posts. Thanks computedshorty for the info about the Camberwell Borough Council website. I never venture into the Lounge, maybe I should. The new development on the Lordship Lane prefabs site has had to designed around the remaining prefab, the one that always has a lovely garden. He is going to be able to stay in his home apparently. Bingobongo I like the way you describe peoples lives as being in layers in the same places at different (and yes some much more terrifying than present) times. Seems to me one of the oldest survivors is the postbox on the crossroads, an early 'VR' one. A month or so ago I woke up early one morning and looked out to see a couple of men tidying up after repainting it. Strange timing but makes sense I suppose. I wonder how many layers of red paint there are on it?
  15. Hi bingobongo, welcome to the entertainments of the East Dulwich forum. I live in the corner shop corner of Goodrich/Landcroft opposite the bombsite/now flats you and Computedshorty are talking about - the one that was a grocers, not the sweet shop. Computedshorty has told me something of this crossroads, i'd be interested in any other memories you could share, it's great to learn about the house and its history. Thanks.
  16. Dulwich Books have a week of writing workshops coming up in October, some for adults and some for children. Ok, that's West not East Dulwich, but it's only a short walk away, or a trip on the P13. www.dulwichbooks.co.uk
  17. Woo hoo indeed! Just couldn't believe this the first time we went, and will be taking a Saturday off work to go to this year's festival. Two stages (indoors and out) brilliant live music and a great venue (wonderful view over London) - right on our doorstep! Music highlights were many but would name check Steve Boltz and Country Dirt. I'm not connected to the Aquarius, but just want to spread the word.
  18. Xenia - can't get the links to work, or is it just me? Is this still happening?
  19. Another dairy... I copied this photo from the web a while back, found it interesting as it would have been close to where I live. Sorry about the quality, but you can see that the address is 6 Goodrich Road. Annie
  20. Thanks, that looks like just what we want. Glad I asked...
  21. Has anyone had their house number etched in the glass 'light' above their front door? Seen this a lot in East Dulwich and we thought it would work well for us as we're a corner house which can cause confusion over the number. We've had one quote of just under ?500 which is a bit higher than we expected. Does anyone have any advice/experience of this ? Thanks, Annie

I think the sign said Autumn hours are Thursdays to Sundays but worth checking before you make the trip. More locally agree with Sue about Mon P'tit Chou, very friendly and a good menu.
  23. Probably a bit further away than you mean, but the best one I've been to as a buyer was at Hayes Street Farm near Bromley. The day we went (admittedly this was last year) it was huge. They have a couple a month, the dates are on their website and on www.interestingevents.co.uk and I think they also advertise it in the South London Press.
  24. Ed has done several jobs for us over the last few years - installing a new oven, re-routing some untidy electrics, replacing a faulty switch unit etc, and we've always been more than happy with the work. He will discuss and explain what he is doing and any options, his rates are reasonable and he's a thoroughly nice guy to have working in your home. (joskat - part p is mentioned on his website www.edelectrician.co.uk) Annie

I think you might mean Kempton Park, google Sunbury Antiques for dates (two Tuesdays a month). Yes, an early start but it's an easy train journey from Vauxhall and great fun with lots of traders indoors and out.
