Thanks for sharing; amazing and very positive. Just out of interest why did you specify the Mayor's religion. Is this relevant?

I'd have zero tolerance and send cars to the crusher. Yep, war on motorists! -

John Otway at the Ivy and a question about Carter USM
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
To square the circle Rob Newman used Carter as his theme music and Badiel Genesis (pre-80) or the Smiths (I'll have to reslisten to the programme) Yes in deed, I'm well trumped. Just done a little more research, Mudhoney and Hole played there - the latter featuring Courtney Love, I recall a poster advertising this but I last went decades ago, and the bands that became mega - Oasis, and Radiohead. -
Transport issues between London Bridge/central London and East Dulwich
malumbu replied to Sue's topic in Roads & Transport
Rather patronising, I've been cycling in London for decades and occasionally driving through it as well, I have never in my life wanted to or needed to drive up Charing Cross Road and Totenham Court Road, and have always found it bizarre why people would do this apart from trades people and those supplying shops. Even much of this can be done on zero emission vehicles. On a Friday or Saturday night you look at many who drive in this dreadfully congested area and scratch your head. It will be so much better without this. Too right that cyclists, and more importantly pedestrians, should be prioritised. It sound like you are addicted to driving, a hard habit to break. Fortunately I saw the light many years ago. Join me. https://greenfleet.net/features/26062018/fuelling-last-mile-pedal-power -
Should cyclists have the same speed restrictions as motor vehicles?
malumbu replied to tedfudge's topic in Roads & Transport
The scheme in the park will do more to encourage more courteous cycling than a threat of a lifetime in prison. The latter situation is just not going to happen. The comparison with sentencing guidelines for causing death by careless driving is useful - essentially you have to cross all the boxes to get four years in prison in terms of recklessness and attitude, and for most it will significantly less if the sentence is custodial. You'd have to be using our bike as a weapon to get more than this, https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/offences/magistrates-court/item/causing-death-by-careless-or-inconsiderate-driving/ Cars make much more effective weapons than bikes, and powers are already there for the courts - manslaughter and murder. https://www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/road-traffic-fatal-offences-and-bad-driving If the vehicle was used as a weapon to kill a person, with the intent to kill them or commit grievous bodily harm, a charge of murder may be considered. This is not a question of the standard of driving but rather of the defendant’s intention. Alternatively, a charge of manslaughter, whether unlawful act, gross negligence or corporate may be appropriate. Few of you want to engage in a proper discussion and just repeat the same views again and again, which for some seems to be driven by a general dislike of cyclists, and/or a number of environmental schemes that have put some restrictions on motorists. Cyclists are not a homogeneous group. A first approach is to understand why some are not courteous and what the levers are to address this. Rather than an ineffective nuclear option. Funny thing was I hadn't realised how pointless this new change was until I had looked deeper. Instinctively I knew it was daft, but now I know that is the case. -
John Otway at the Ivy and a question about Carter USM
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
I explained that I had Googled due to David Badiel talking about the New Cross venue and for some reason found my thread. https://www.concertarchives.org/venues/the-venue-new-cross-f673e868-e71d-49ee-8238-855de27b040b For younger readers the link gives a few highlights, I was at the very early Levellers gig silverfish (who?) but missed all the early Britpop. I recall grunge bands playing there - Nirvana? -

Met Atilla at Forest Fest in Honor Oak last year. Otway wasn't playing with him at the New Cross Gig. A band called Newtown Neurotics also played but I don't remember them. I also don't remember seeing Blur opening in a four band tour at the Academy around this time, or Pulp supporting St Etienne at the Shepherds Bush Empire a couple of years later. David Badiel and Rob Newman played the Venue around the same time; he is discussing this with Verne on Radio 2. Googled for more info and oddly came up with this thread. I expect this will have zero interest for most of you. Unless you want to talk about famous bands you saw, but don't remember. -

You make a good point about selfish drivers, but then make an excuse for them This is similar to some people on this site complaining about fly tipping but then justifying this due to local authority costs for disposing of refuse. -
Oh, how sad. How fortunate many of us were to see him at the Goose including his last ever performance. Thank you Sue and Nyge.

This is a forum for debate. How are you engaging? Throwing insults is not debating. I made some points. If you don't want to discuss the issues then I don't understand why you are getting involved. -
Should cyclists have the same speed restrictions as motor vehicles?
malumbu replied to tedfudge's topic in Roads & Transport
It would be useful if you could address my points. The cow, and the facetious pictures, were just putting into context that the numbers killed where a cyclist is involved are tiny. And I don't even know whether this was due to a pedestrian stepping out into the road without looking - as many pedestrian deaths are, sadly. I don't see any of the many cyclists I know, and know of, suddenly changing their behaviour due to the highly unlikely situation that they are being irresponsible and kill someone and could face much harsher punishment. That is because few of us actually don't want to hurt others, and that applies to the overwhelming majority of us, whether we ride at 10 or 22 mph, and whether we stop at every red light of not. I don't think that you understand the notion of proportionality. That is targeting effort where you get the greatest reduction in harm. You may also get a broader understanding of the situation by looking through my attachments, which I am most happy to discuss. -
I find net curtains more useful for spying on neighbours. And/or some security cameras.

Ah, but are these cows on bicycles, and were they using their horns to warn pedestrians? And was this on a beach? -

Well you have got your way so no doubt you will be pretty pleased. I expect that this wont make a jot of difference to most cyclists. As for 99.99999% it is irrelevant. The big issue will be increasingly with illegal ebikes, many ridden by delivery riders. Hopefully little parliamentary time will be spent on the above change. If Starmer was braver he would take on the delivery companies, get them to PAYE their riders, provide legal bikes and training. But that is unlikely to happen. There will be some line about how it would affect hard working families who are just about managing. Much of the interest is due to two high profile incidents, and good to see that IDS has got something to put his teeth into, as he was dreadful as a Tory leader. https://road.cc/content/blog/iain-duncan-smiths-anti-cycling-crusade-anti-reality-310779 I tried to get some stats on the number of cyclists doing time, but couldn't find any. I came up with some stats on drivers doing time , this is not meant to be tit for tat but I found it interesting reading - https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/publications/item/motoring-offences-statistical-bulletin/ Over 300 a year sentenced for causing death by dangerous, or by inconsiderate driving, and a similar number for serious injury, Effort would be much better in improving driving standards for all road users, even pedestrians, through education, information, training and, yes, a little nudge as well. Royal Parks encouraging riders to be more considerate is not a bad thing. The only Royal Park that I regularly use is Hyde, where the cyclist speed bumps are a bit excessive, so difficult to go above 10mph! Cyclists causing death by dangerous cycling is around the same number as killed by cows, lightening and no doubt sand castles collapsing. -

Pedestrianising Oxford Street is long overdue. I recall the fuss made when this was done in Trafalgar Square but now we'd never go back to how it was -
Hope not, as need to put swift box back up. Sadly I was away and one of my tadpoles nurseries died, presumably from stagnant water. I have others and will take more care.

I don't put anything in my food waste bin, the veg all goes into the compost, and the rest feeds animals. Not a lot of the latter; whilst I am not bothered by the foxes, hedgehogs and badgers I don't want to encourage two of them. I hope to get a community award. Please nominate me. If I had neighbours who didn't do this I would name and shame on the socials. The street WhatsApp is a good start and fertile ground for such disputes.

A rather carcentric view of the world And this is not nudge. Nudge is low cost interventions such as texting people reminders to pay their tax/fines/encouraging parents to get their kids to do their homework as this is the cool thing to do. Cameron and Big Society. Not closing roads, widening pavements and other stuff to make things better for pedestrians. Why has this thread become yet another one going on about the victimised motorists? -
Caught him a few years ago at a bizarre gig in Canterbury and know his London agent. Sad but he wants a well man. It was a pleasure to have seen him a few times, always different! Hadn't realised he had been a local.

Stewart Lee, who I have seen numerous times, played a gig 18 months ago in Peckham, turning up late and doing around 12 mins of an expected headliner slot. He has no social media presence and is uncontactable. I complained to the ticket agents and promoters to no avail. Obviously I wouldn't boycott a paper due to this incident. With hard copy print declining more liberal media need support irrespective of how easy it is to pick holes. The decline of regional and local papers has compounded the issue of so many drawing their information from the right wing/populist press, and unverified reports on social media.

Why are you blaming pavement widening on cyclists? If it was more bike lanes, secure bike parking and the like then that would be different. Can you show me proof that the pavement widening is all due to LCC/Southwark Cyclists. Being a member I'm not aware of any campaign. -
Never heard of anyone who has put poisoned meat down in urban areas. You will find the vast majority of the population are nice people. Illegal killing of animals that take game happens in rural areas but that is a different issue Did you report the dumping of the meat to environmental health and the police? By all means speculate, I expect that it was fly tipping. Where it came from and why is athe question.... Foxes have great digestive systems and will eat most foodstuffs.
